      I have orange rilis. One mother came in pregnant. The babies seem to have grown to be red males and solid orange females.
      And they're finally breeding! 2 recent molts. Crazy guys today, now I know why.

    Had to watch a refresher since I have babies! I bought a pregnant tangerine cherry at Petco on a whim and took great care to minimize stress (brought my own solid plactic transport container, gently scooped her in so she never left the water, and drip acclimated her and a 2nd large female stowaway who was a freebie). Normally I'm not a fan of big box pet stores, but the coloration and grade of these were just spectacular. Even the red cherries were impressive with a handful of true fire red grade specimens. Everything was great the first few days, but then the berried female became lethargic and died a few hours later. I caught it within an hour of her dying and wondered if the eggs could be saved. I saw plans for an "egg bubbler" that's cheap and easy to make but lacked the supplies on hand to craft it in time. I carefully extracted the eggs from the female on a paper plate using 2 toothpicks with a puddle of tank water to keep her and the eggs constantly wet. I sucked them up in a pipette and shot them into my shrimp dip net that was a super fine mesh and wedged it up under the HOB filters exit flow so they would have continuous water flow. It's my bettas old tank so the outlet flow is diffused with a medium pore filter media sponge. Every day I'd suck the eggs up and redeposit them to try and keep them from clumping or getting build up on them. After roughly 14 days I noticed some had turned white and appeared partially "cracked" open so I sucked them up and released them into the tank and resigned myself to a high likelihood of failure and figured whatever happens happens. I have a very mature moderately planted 5gal with a nerite, ivory mystery snail, and now solo female tangerine cherry so predators weren't an issue and food should be plentiful, but I didn't have much faith. That was roughly a week ago. This morning I woke up and noticed something on the glass, I thought it was a worm or even plant debris stuck to the glass until I saw another identical critter shoot past and I knew that profile instantly! It was a baby shrimp! lol I have counted 2 so far, but with the dense cover provided by so many plants I feel very confident there are more in hiding. I couldn't believe my gambit worked. I think I'll prepare an egg bubbler now in preparation of this happening again just to minimize any future loses.

    I was watching this to see if you can see the babies straight away. Thank you for letting me know they tend to hide for the first few days. I set the tank up with A LOT of hiding places for babies. One shrimp lost her eggs a couple of days ago and one yesterday. I've seen 4 babies, but both had a lot of eggs. I'm hoping that the 4 I've seen are the most adventurous from the first shrimp and that the rest are hiding and the second shrimp's babies are also hiding. They both hatched their eggs at the back of the tank in a big clump of Java Moss and it's pretty much impossible to see in there. I have 6 adult Blue Velvet shrimp and regularly can't see all of them, so the odds of spotting babies seems low. It's our first lot of baby shrimp, so I've got everything crossed that there are loads in there hiding at the back.

Do you sell them or use them for live food or do enough of the babies not actually make it to adulthood that they keep their population under control?

    Hello! Wonderful video. My question is, what are those white micro-organisms floating around in the tank? They're almost too tiny to be baby shrimp. For a better understanding, you can spot one above the hidden (half-hidden in the plant) shrimp in the video at 5:30 . I have a lot of those in my tank and I'm confused if I should change the water because my female recently moulted and I don't want to stress them out.

      Hi, Those little floating things could be little paramecium or something. The tank water has all kinds of tiny life in it. More food for shrimp and fish!

    Hi GW! I just got my first cherry shrimp, seven of them, and they are so cool. Reason I got them is because I have lots of algae in my ten gallon and my little clown pleco, Sylvester J pussycat-fish, isn't grazing enough, sufferin' succotash! After a week and a half, I have two molts. Does this mean I should have baby's soon? I haven't seen any randy males darting around yet, but they may have when I was at work. And if I have baby shrimp soon, should I skip vacuuming the substrate for a while? I like to vacuum every other day. I don't want to suck up the baby's. My gravel vac has a screw on end with holes like a shower head and I put polyester floss in it for a filter during vacuuming. This tank wasn't meant to be a breeder tank. Any advice? Thanks!

    • @GirlTalksFish
      @GirlTalksFish  Před 4 lety

      Ooo, the molting might mean more babies! (Or it could be the males that molted.) I think the polyester floss idea should work just fine for not sucking up babies. I also siphon my dirty water into a white bucket and then just go over the dirty water with a flashlight. Since the babies are about 2 mm long after hatching, they're fairly easy to spot. Then just use a turkey baster to catch them and put them back. 👍

    Just got a blue shrimp and it turns out she’s pregnant. I have no idea what to do or how to care for the babies. She’s currently in a 5 gallon, heavily planted tank with 2 mystery snails and 1 Ameno (whose not the father). Is it okay for her to be with the other Amano? What can I do to make sure she has a successful pregnancy?
