I have a lot of feelings about this 😂 I was a successful costume creator who worked with several local theater groups. I had plenty of work but the bottom line was nobody wanted to pay. I left.
I also created things to sell at a local organization's gift shop. Similar problems!
Like most of us, I had a lot of time to think during lock down. I decided I now only sew for my family and and gifts for friends/special events. I decline almost all sewing jobs.
Formal wear alterations is my least favorite. I often will say: there is a REASON the shoppes charge so much for alterations! You understand that dress has X number of layers. That means I am altering X number of dresses in one!
I found my decision very liberating and my creativity is returning.
I do understand this does not help a person wanting to do this for a living. This is just my story.
Don't sell yourself short. Expect the pay you deserve. People who really want it WILL pay. I just got tired of the fight.
I am enjoying your channel, thanks for what you share. I came across a nice embroidery machine. This is a new craft for me. Hahahaha, like I need another one!

I think people under value themselves because they don’t know that they are worth it! Life has taught me my skills, my college education was for something completely different then being a fabric artist! I am always learning! I have been sewing since a little girl! I am just now learning to dial in my best with it! I do hope to one day be able to sell my products and at that time I will have a difficult time pricing, as to not under cut myself, let alone others!

I am guilty of not charging enough in the past. Recently a friend ask me to put a zipper in her grandsons winter coat vest. And she pointed out that the cost of the zipper and my time to go to store or order it on line are part of the job . So now I say the price for the job and they can take it or leave it. Thank you for sharing

I would love to see a video on embroidering on vinyl without it puckering.

Thank you for writing. I am considering a Patreon or a purchase video subscription website just for special request videos like yours. I will let everyone know when we do.. In the meantime, may I suggest you sign up for local embroidery classes from the local sewing machine independent dealer where you bought your embroidery machine from. They can help assist you there.

I just want to know where you find people who will actually pay for your work. I can’t get people to pay $100 for a bag that took me 5+ hours to make. They scoff at the prices. I find quality materials, because there’s nothing worse than putting hours of work into something, just for it to fall apart.
    It’s disheartening.

You have to build your brand and it takes time. Visit department stores of all consumer levels to see where your style would fit in. Look at different brand designers. Would your audience shop at Louis Vuitton, JCPenney, or Walmart? Then when you do your marketing target that kind of consumer. All the best to you.

I just looked at your YT wall. I looked for a website on your about. You do not do any visual marketing at all. You have a lot of marketing to do for yourself.

@@christophernejman thanks for the reply. Yes this is my personal account that I’ve had forever 😆 I try to keep business and personal separate but maybe that’s a mistake.
I am just starting out with making to sell and so far I’m only selling locally, but you’re absolutely right, I have a lot of marketing to do for myself still. Thanks for the inspiration!
