The Angels plan was probably to make the playoffs and show Ohtani he could win there, so that he would be more likely to re-sign. I can’t blame them for that. They'll be paying him an ungodly amount of money and have no money to hire necessary help to build a winning team. Past few seasons have shown that having Ohtani and Trout doesn't equal success. They need a lot of pieces, especially 2 more solid starting pitchers and solid relievers which the Angels will not have enough money for by keeping Ohtani.

Jerry Dipoto used to be the gm for the Angels but Moreno wouldn't let him make any of the moves he wanted so he left and helped break the Mariners playoff drought and him and Hollander are the main guys that built the Mariners incredible pitching. There's a reason that fans celebrated when they heard that Moreno was selling the team and why they were so disappointed when that didnt happen. Moreno may be a big spender but he's a dumb one and almost all of the terrible decisions that the Angles have made over the past decade of playoffless baseball is because of him, not the front office.

It was a lose-lose. They weren't going to get a king's ransom back for a likely 2 month rental, unless that team had some kind of assurance that Ohtani would sign with them, and that would be foolish on his part. Let's face it, if they were going to trade him, last year was the time to do it. They probably would have gotten that king's random in prospects back for him. Also, their chances of bringing him back after trading him would be almost zero, whereas now, they still have a slim chance. And management saves face by keeping him. Angels fans would have revolted. Now when he leaves, they have plausible deniability. The only way he was staying is if the moves to shore up the roster for a playoff push worked and a playoff appearance enticed Ohtani to stick it out with the Angels and play meaningful baseball for the next few seasons. But that was unlikely to happen.

The only thing in this video I might disagree with is blaming the Angels GM Perry Minasian for this decision. I can't prove it, but I have a feeling this decision came straight from Angel owner Arte Moreno. Minisian was the guy who implemented it, but whether he fully agreed with this idea is unknown. Why do I think this was Arte Moreno's decision? Because it is exactly the kind of thing he has done in the past, overriding the decisions of the very people he hired to make decisions.
In 2011, Moreno told then Angels GM Tony Regan to trade for Vernon Wells within 24 hours or be fired. Toronto had been hoping someone would rescue them from at least part Wells remaining contract. The Angels ate it all and Wells hit for .218 with an OPS+ of 84 that year and .230 and 90 in 2012. The Angels paid Wells $47 million for those two seasons. The Yankees foolishly took Wells off the Angels hands for the remaining two years of his contract.
I also recall that following the 2013 season, Arte Moreno personally offered Matt Garza; a journeyman starting pitcher, a four year deal for $50 million. Fortunately, Matt Garza was on vacation camping and couldn't speak with his agent and Moreno had given Garza a take it or leave it offer and he didn't take it, so the Milwaukee Brewers made the mistake of signing Garza for roughly the same amount and years.
Moreno hired people who gutted the Angels scouting and training program. Following Mike Trout, the highest total WAR by any player who came up through the Angels farm system and has stayed with them is Tyler Ward at 5.0, and he earned 3.7 of the WAR number last year. The Angels have had the worst or second worst farm system in MLB for at least ten or eleven years and as a team they have made one bonehead move after another and the common factor through the years of these mistakes has been the owner. If the Angels are still in Anaheim when Moreno eventually sells the team, the city should have a parade to celebrate.

Sitting there WANTING to get injured so he doesn't have to play - like he goes up to the plate with zero protection gear. The guy goes home and enjoys the $$ he's raking in. Never working on his craft (his defense has gotten much worse, and defense is something that should be like riding a bike. it should be a CONSTANT. and yet he's managed to find a way to forget how to throw a ball across the diamond). The Angels have a few things going for them that may allow them to pull this off:
    1. They did win the original Ohtani sweepstakes and he chose them over all the other MLB teams.
    2. They protect him from media demands and allow him to focus on just playing/practicing baseball.
    3. Arte Moreno WILL back up the money truck and dump a stupid amount of money at Shohei’s feet.
    4. They’re one of five (let’s ignore the A’s for obvious reasons) west coast teams which decreases their competition.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they resign him and, hopefully, Moreno allows the GM to put a good supporting staff around him and Trout and stop the Rendon-type acquisitions.

Dude, have you ever been to an Angels home game?
The vibe there is insane. At least, it was until the end of the Mariners sweep. There's Shohei Ohtani stuff all over the place. Shohei IS their draw for fans. He's basically THE National Hero/Icon over in Japan. Japanese people literally just fly into LAX, walk off the plane with their luggage, and take an Uber straight to the stadium to see him play. He steps up to the plate and the stadium absolutely erupts. He's that big of a deal.
That's lots and lots and lots of $$$, and that's what Arte Moreno ultimately cares about the most. And Ohtani is a massive value. He's drawn countless thousands of people into MLB. And the Angels get to be the face of that. That's a really big deal. To a guy like Moreno, who's probably going to sell the team after this season anyways, he's not invested in the long-term at all.
Speaking of Ohtani: obviously this is probably the Angels' last year with him. If not, it's their chance to show him that they can do something with him. Ohtani likes the Angels, he likes the players on his team, he likes the fans there and he likes the area a lot. He has a history of choosing unlikely mid-tier teams and then standing out with them. Personally, I think if they don't make the playoffs, if they at least get close and have a decent record by the end of the season there's a lot more likely chance that he'll stick around than people think. Yes, he wants to win. But he wants to win and do it with the Angels. Whether or not that sentiment lasts after the season is a matter that nobody will truly know until the dust settles in the off-season, but this whole thing really is about Ohtani and his relationship with them and it's honestly the smarter play to keep him and go all-in and hope for the best.
Yeah, there's the ego aspect of not wanting to be the team that trades Ohtani. And TBH, that's a valid way of looking at things. Why would you give up you cash cow? But I feel like the importance placed on that sentiment is overblown at best.
Also...I'm pretty new to MLB, but at least until that Mariners Sweep happened I could see a lot of excitement in the long-suffering Angels fandom. So many people were super hyped up that we were saying "screw it" and finally going all-in for once. That's ballsy. It's a big deal. It was saying that they cared to finally make something of this talent after squandering it for a decade.
Was it "smart" from a boring, business-oriented, spreadsheet absorbed bean counter point of view? Not at all.
Was it "smart" from an entertainment point of view? Absolutely. And TBH, I'm for that. MLB is too mired in lifeless statistics and metrics and Moneyball sabermetrics these days anyways. It's fun to see someone take a risk and inject some heart and soul back into the game. Is it "SmArT?" No. But fuck "SmArT." Sometimes it's awesome to see someone take a huge risk. It may not pay off, but that's way more entertaining that way. There's some real stakes there. You're a lot more invested in how they do. Obviously the Angels and Angels fans want Ohtani to stay around. And why wouldn't they? As an Angels fan myself, I'd much rather see them go all-in on this moment and try to keep him around! It's not "SmArT" but it's entertaining as hell and honestly, I'd be happier coming into the next season without Ohtani knowing that they really did try to keep him than if they'd have just traded him away for some prospects that may or may not have panned out in five years. That's so boring! And I bet a lot of the other fans feel the same.
They finally broke their slump yesterday. Maybe they'll start getting momentum back. Troutie is about to be off the IL soon. It's exciting. Will they make it to the playoffs? Probably not. But even if they don't, it'll be a hell of a ride, and that's way more awesome than if they'd have just traded off Ohtani and said "meh."

If you ask me, I don't think it's the GM to blame, I 100% believe it's the owner, Arte Moreno.
Just a year ago it was all but done he was gonna have to sell the team, between the bloated payroll, poor performance, awful record, bad attendance, and on top of that some corruption allegations between him and some elected officials there in the city we all know Mickey Mouse secretly is controlling with an iron fist.
Anyways, jokes aside, he was fielding offers and it seemed like a reality. Then one day he woke up, looked at himself in the mirror and said "I'M ARTE MORENO G*D D*MNIT" and basically said he isn't going anywhere.
Then this season, it started off alright, but then it went sideways, and Trout went out again, and the impending free agency it seemed all but certain Angels would receive a kings ransom for Ohtani, getting multiple legit major league players as well as a slew of top prospects that would be 2, 3 years max from being big league ready.
And talks were hot, at least in the reporting world, insane proposed packages being written by Chat GPT authors showing up in my news feed each day, all full of boomers making Biden comments and Russian bots spewing nonsense. It seemed inevitable Ohtani would grab upwards of 8 serious players, enough by themselves to cover the minimum amount of players in my local softball beer league and not have to bring in a ringer.
But Artie woke up one day, snapped out of his despair and said in his mirror, "I AM ARTE F**KING MORENO" and refused to save his faltering organization and did what he does best. That is...do the absolute worst thing possible, something nobody else would do in the same situation.
Keep in mind, when he gave Pujols that contract, everyone said there's a major reason you don't over 10+ year contracts, especially to guys on the bad side of 30. Well Arte walked so all the other bad owners could sprint into what I could only imagine would be a whole new CBA capping contract years, but idk, MLB prints money even when families in their cities can no longer afford studio apartments within the city limits. Baseball doesn't make sense.
Also there's Mike Trout, the 2nd all time great Angel named after a fish, and arguably the greatest player of the past decade only reaches the playoffs one time. Some would argue trade him years ago to build a team that can compete, nope, lock him down to possibly a worse contract than Pujols.
He sets the bar so high for bad contracts we all as baseball fans can now enjoy having to pay near $100 for cheap seats in dynamic pricing situations for seats 20 years ago were about ten bucks.
Is there any low Moreno knows? I sure as hell don't know, but I can only imagine when Robert Oppenheimer theorized about stars collapsing in on themselves becoming black holes, he somehow had one of his fever dreams and actually saw into the future of the Arte Moreno owned Angels franchise.

Ohtani staying with the angels under any capacity would be bad for baseball. Hopefully Ohtani leaves and they're left with a fat overpaid trout and Rendon with no future no farm lol! As a dodger fan that's a dream 😂

Despite how much they suck, fans still come to games to see Ohtani, buy Angel merch because of Ohtani, spend money at the park because of Ohtani, etc., thus making money for Arte Moreno. This is the reason he wasn't traded.
Also, the Angels have sucked since Trout arrived, so I wonder what kind of shit they fed Trout to convince him to sign for 12years. He could have gotten that money from any other team, so it had to be something else.

No it's only about the money and locale. I don't think Trout really cares about winning championships. If you became rich and living in So. Cali you made it life under American pop culture.

Angels just get likes on social media and pull up some pointless stat about Ohtani or Trout, while the other team wins the game

The difference between the Angels and Dodgers is that you can still get a Dodger hot dog in October.

The Angels could’ve got the Farm for Ohtani. Should’ve traded Trout a few years ago as well, and would’ve got the Farm in return. Imagine the Super Team they’d be today. But the Angles would rather say they have the best 2 baseball players on the planet. Stupidest team ever.

You are being way to harsh on the Angels for not trading Ohtani. They looked at offers. No one was giving them a massive package to rent Ohtani for two months. I actually liked their decision to buy. They knew that this was their last year to run it back with Ohtani and Trout. I applaud them being aggressive and going for it. They didn't get the results they wanted, but I still think it was good process.
