  • Annie Sloan demonstrates how to create the look of rich mahogany, using her decorative paint, Chalk Paint® as a stain. In this second of two videos, Annie shows you how to use her Dark Soft Wax to finish the look.
    Annie Sloan developed her unique and versatile decorative paint, Chalk Paint®, in 1990. She wanted to create one paint that could achieve several different techniques and finishes - from creating a textured chippy look to achieving a smooth modern finish, or even creating a wash. Annie's paint is non toxic, low VOC, and very easy to work with. There's no need to prime or sand before starting - you can just get stuck straight in to the fun bit!

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  Před 3 lety +1

      It sounds like too much wax was left on the table. Don’t worry, this is an easy fix. Simple brush on another thin coat of wax. This will wake up the underlying wax coat and make it easy for you to remove all the excess. Then steadily wipe away the excess wax with a clean absorbent cloth. Don’t move too fast as this will begin to buff the wax before it is dry, resulting in an uneven look. Be sure to switch to a clean cloth when the one you are working with becomes clogged with wax. A simple test to see if you've removed all of the excess wax is to lightly draw a clean fingertip across the surface ... if you leave a mark you still have too much wax on there, so keep wiping. Then let the remaining wax dry. You can leave as is for a natural sheen or wait until the following day and buff with a soft cloth for a more polished look. The wax will cure in just 5 to 21 days depending on climate. You can use your table in the meantime, just treat it gently. Be sure to use placemats and coasters.

      Hello Adamos! Wax is perfect on its own. You should not apply lacquer or varnish over wax, it will not work and may peel. In Cyprus there is a stockist in Nicosia and one in Limossol. Visit my website to locate your nearest shop.

    I'm new to this Annie...I just received you Old White and Paris Grey as my very first paint purchase, and your book, Quick and Easy Paint Transformations. I am at a loss for what to do first! I have watched and read countless tutorials on various techniques. You make it look so easy! Anyway, I love this table you have done. If I use the same colors and technique on similar wood, will I get a finish as beautiful as yours? Or are you saying on the video that the result will be different with different with different woods?

    Hi Great informative video. I want to paint my lounge/dinning furniture a blackish/dark brownish colour. I don't want it solid black and love the idea of dark brown undertones to warm it up as I think it will suit that grey tones of the walls and carpet and white trimmings in the room. Is this possible? and how would I achieve it? Any advice please.

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  Před 6 lety

      Hi there! There are of course loads of ways to do this, one way would be to use Chalk Paint® in Graphite with Dark Chalk Paint® Wax over the top, which will give a brown, aged tinge to it. Take a look at my video czcams.com/video/BWrEfpCEVZE/video.html to show you how to use Dark Chalk Paint® Wax. I would suggest trying it on a small part of the furniture first to see if it's the effect you want. Good luck!

    Hi Annie this is so gorgeous!! I’m currently about to paint a statement piece of pine furniture in my home and I am in search of the color of the blue/indigo color of the wall at the end of this video where u gave this awesome table that beautiful mahogany look.. please let me know what u did to achieve that exact blue/ of your wall.. is it the red primer with napoleonic blue on top like in the other vid of the antique piece u did by chance? Did u add a wax ? Clear or white if so? Thank you so much for your time and for always inspiring and sharing your beautiful art!

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  Před 6 lety

      Hi Ryan, it is painted with just Napoleonic Blue Wall Paint. This also comes in Chalk Paint®, which would be perfect for painting furniture! There's no wax on the wall but I would suggest using Clear Wax if you are painting furniture. Here's a link: www.anniesloan.com/annie-sloan-products/paints/chalk-paint/napoleonic-blue-chalk-paint

    • @AnnieSloanHome
      @AnnieSloanHome  Před 5 lety

      Hi there, we wouldn't recommend using our wax for a surface where water will pool and sit, such as a countertop. We would use this technique, and finish with a hard wearing water-based varnish, which you should be able to pick up from a hard ware store.

    This is beautiful. I also love the look of the Graphite with wax over the top. I'd love to do this with some old bedside tables I have, but there's one problem, the tables have the really fine laminate over the top. They are solid wood, I'm just not sure what exactly is underneath the laminate, if it's one piece of wood or several smaller pieces laid side by side. Any tips on how to do a piece with the laminate? Do I remove the laminate, can I sand it? I've held off on doing these for sentimental reasons. They were my great grandmother's and would hate to ruin them but want them to go better with my decor.

    I'm in shock that wax is being recommended for a kitchen table top. Wax melts, it will not hold up to hot plates, a bowl of chilli or soup, cups of coffee etc. Any alcohol drink spilled on it will also ruin it. There is no resistance to chemicals like alcohol or disinfecting wipes etc. Poly is a much better option. Wax has a place, but not on table tops

    • @nancydorbi6178
      @nancydorbi6178 Před 5 lety +1

      Yes, I did this and you are totally right. It did melt, chip off and didn't hold up to regular table top usage.

      @faith399 Před 5 lety

      Sometimes people use slate on top of their kitchen tops and tables for cutting boards and plates/bowls when eating so maybe that’s why she thought it wouldn’t really effect the was. I don’t know if this is true just a thought

  • @kimmackay6145
    @kimmackay6145 Před 7 lety +2

    not as good as I thought it would be. Why even bother to paint it first, as you cant see any of the purple once she has applied two coats of dark wax? Starting to think this paint is totally over-rated.

    • @pennyt2777
      @pennyt2777 Před 6 lety

      Its color theory, the original wood was quite pale and didn’t have alot of red pigments in it which it needed for the rich brown. By adding the purple she made up for the lack of red, if she hadn’t then the dark wax would probably make the table top look more green.

    I cringe thinking how many nice antiques or furniture with beautiful wood will be ruined by this. It is like the "antiquing" craze of the 1960s. A fad that will show its time very soon.

      LOL...."a fad" you think...I'm an artist with a lot of interior decorator friends and a lot of very talented creative and craftsman friends who use chalk paint for MANY projects/professional applications...Chalk paint has been around for maybe close to THIRTY yr's by now...You can be assured it's not going to fade away anytime soon...Who paints "nice antiques" in GOOD condition anyway? This amazing paint is also used on walls, vinyl, fabric and leather...Versatile it is...
