wow. Richard Buckland is still teaching at UNSW. He was my favourite lecturer back in 2000 - he always put so much effort to make the lecture interesting and easy to understand.
Lecture: 7:44 to 23:45 Admin stuff (skippable): 23:45 to 52:20 skip to 34:20 and definitely to 36:12 and 44:45 too. a compelling plagiarism explanation specifically for programming students.
Wait is this literally an entire CS course at a well known university? All available for anyone to view for free on CZcams? God the world we live in, amazing.
Amen. I LOVE the feeling I get when I solve a problem in my sleep at 2 in the morning, go out to my computer, slam down some code, and bask the glowing screen in the dark room in wonder, and not being able to sleep after.
I wish I had access to this when I was studying in third grade college in India. How can you not love a subject when you have someone like him teaching it so passionately. All we had were stupid teachers/lecturers who had no interest in the subject.
Programming and writing code is SO THUG. I just love how like when you get stuff right its just like, instant gratification, and sometimes it will be just one after another until you're just awesome-gasming in your chair about how cool you are. :D
Awesome lecture. I wish we had this when I was a COMP1A student at this institution. I'm wondering if its possible to have that plagiarism video posted up separately. I think it's classic.
@Islandfad I agree with you. Math is all around us. It is the God's creation....everything else is human's.Because, it is perfect science, many of people dislike it......but when you realize the sense of math,it is very simple to do with. Sorry for grammatic mistakes. English is not my native language Drazen L, student of Faculty of Information Technologies of SlobomirP University, Doboj, Bosnia. My wish is to meet profesor Buckland, because, HE is the Profesor unlike others. Respect!!!.:-))
Yep, this guy singularly responsible for making switch degrees and pursue a job in programing. That was over 10 years ago now. You will never find a better professor!!
Hey erm i want to do further computing in the future. .love to go uni and do Computing Systems/Electronic engineering etc any advice??? btw im 15 . .maths isnt might strong point but im good at ICT and science any useful advice:)
@andrei644 Not only are you wrong, but you also misunderstood his statement. He meant he likes CS because it's his passion, NOT because he wants to get rich from it.
it is worth it to watch this lectures to the end? i mean this is only programming, but this students going on another lessions what they need to know to understand all of this better??? and is that lectures going to the end, or lectures stop somewhere in the middle of semester? and final question is it possible to learn programing very good here? i don't want to watch all of this if they showing only basic variables, functions, like for if while and others begginer things, if anyone finish this please tell me .
i learn programming, and i hate programming, but i need programming, so thx to this vid, i slightly know hwo to change myself to become a programming student.
@de3a10 yes it is. Do you not understand what coding means? It doesn't mean encoding, it means writing functions and classes and scripts, which is programming.
yes thats all programming is.. it requires almost no thinking to be honest to me programming is more like a real job as like washing dishes it could get hard and sweating if you already know what you gotta do.. like I have the code in my mind all planned out... just typing it out.. lets say 2000 lines is what is painful.. then compiling it and fixing any typos and finally running it and debugging line by line is what programming is all about.
@Bunfire123 EE requires quite the handle on Physics, which in turn requires a handle on heavier Mathematics. However, if you're able to excel in your science classes you should be able to handle anything that is thrown at you. Just gotta work for it. Comp Sci is, just as Skrip stated, a lot of math.
plz plz plz someone provide couse material plz i tried to get it so hard its really very frustrating openlearning has deleted all course material and i am half way throuh the course
@GaseousAnomaly001 I did that last week. I was laying in bed thinking about how to solve the problem with my Java classes. At about 1:30 I said "I'm such and idiot, I just need to put the class in here." After I put it in I ran the program like 50 times because I spent like 5 hours trying to figure it out.
That was actually a baby threat compared to my college. Last year there were some people who got dispelled from our university on a take home exam for cheating. They would check our work like crazy and yell at our class for cheating. It was beyond unacceptable.
You're one of the reasons I kept hacking at my computer science education! You good sir deserve a medal for your enthusiasm and honesty.
wow. Richard Buckland is still teaching at UNSW. He was my favourite lecturer back in 2000 - he always put so much effort to make the lecture interesting and easy to understand.
Thanks to reddit for introducing me to mr. Buckland. The world needs more of this kind of heart

this guy is AMAZING!
This is fantastic! Thank you UNSW. I hope more schools take this path to promote themself.
a university shaping future of earth. thank you very much.
Best lectures, i am saying alot of thanks to Richard buckland, please upload more lectures how much you all can,Excellent work
Amen. I LOVE the feeling I get when I solve a problem in my sleep at 2 in the morning, go out to my computer, slam down some code, and bask the glowing screen in the dark room in wonder, and not being able to sleep after.
I was in this course! I miss it so much...
Wow, he's such a great inspiration!
Awesome lecturer!!
I love these lectures!
One of the best lecturer ever! Is he still giving courses?
yep can confirm
yep
This guy is naturally inspiring
You sir, put my thoughts into words.
Well done Richard, thank you.
An example to all the 'hoarders' of education.
This is great! Every university should have teachers like you.
Better video quality wouldn't hurt, though :)
He took teaching to new level, v. nice
I'll be in class and thank you for this opportunity
Awesome video at the end.
I wish I had access to this when I was studying in third grade college in India. How can you not love a subject when you have someone like him teaching it so passionately. All we had were stupid teachers/lecturers who had no interest in the subject.
Fantastic!
i wish i had a teacher like him

This actually makes me miss sitting in a classroom and learning from a lecturer.
Awesome lecture. I wish we had this when I was a COMP1A student at this institution. I'm wondering if its possible to have that plagiarism video posted up separately. I think it's classic.
Awesome ! Love these lectures :o
I'm now more impatient of going in a computing school =p
Wonderful lectures and teacher epecially the video teacher played
Richard Buckland is a great professor of UNSWeareing.
this guy is a good lecturer
This guy is a really engaging lecturer. Wish my teachers were like this! Don't go to the University of Kent! Let's all move to New South Wales!
This guy is a good lecturer :]
damn good lecture
anyone know where can i get the video clip at the end of this lecture
This guy is awesome, I think that I am going to go there... Only if he still teaches.
@sackwhacker lol yeah! Why though? Isn't there a higher quality source video that can be encoded to replace this?
@Islandfad Cool story bro where you get it from?
Hm, that's pretty awesome he's putting them on youtube.
And props to the education system that allowed it
this brings back uni memories.. from a few years back mind you. i feel like im there lol
Is this video series language specified like C or this is it general video series on computing?
recommended book
Programming, Problem Solving and Abstraction with C
if you don't want motivation and information about course go to lecture 2
c++ right? If so that book is free on pdfdrive d0t c0m if anyone is interested
@Islandfad

Thank you so much for this video ^_^
@ambigera
Thank you very much.
Yep, this guy singularly responsible for making switch degrees and pursue a job in programing. That was over 10 years ago now.
You will never find a better professor!!
@littlesometin Is that a Doctor Who referrence?
richard is awesome and so so so nice. Stealin' ain't cool adam.
where can i get a copy of the 'Hero' skit?
logic doesn't require thinking.. it comes naturally.
why is this spotlighted lol, even though I do computer science at uni I wouldn't imagine this is very appealing to a mass audience...
What I would give to have learned in that class.
true
You need to go to Los Angeles. It's Sydney but with bigger billboards.
I'm one of the category C people who can't afford to sit in normally... thanks for this series ^.^

I went up to a biomed video by accident and had to come back down to watch this video.
im at uni too and doing a course that will provide me with income that will no doubt surpass that of 'computer' people

Programming, problem solving and abstraction by Alex Moffat
@de3a10 yes it is. Do you not understand what coding means? It doesn't mean encoding, it means writing functions and classes and scripts, which is programming.
i cant wait to go to university
this guy mentions a book by Alastair Moffat.. who actually teaches at melb uni. i once had a subject with him as the lecturer, pretty cool guy.
WHERE IS THE REST OF IT IS HERE A SECTION MISSING AT THE END?
@Islandfad I am a new student,can I ask you some questions?
yes thats all programming is.. it requires almost no thinking to be honest to me programming is more like a real job as like washing dishes it could get hard and sweating if you already know what you gotta do.. like I have the code in my mind all planned out... just typing it out.. lets say 2000 lines is what is painful.. then compiling it and fixing any typos and finally running it and debugging line by line is what programming is all about.

University profs in the US do it all the time. It is just public school where you wouldn't see it.
That was actually a baby threat compared to my college. Last year there were some people who got dispelled from our university on a take home exam for cheating. They would check our work like crazy and yell at our class for cheating. It was beyond unacceptable.
the plagirism video is at 46:30 if anyone wants to see it, its hilarious
@Skripster .. oh thanks :)
Good luck with your computer science!
Australian University, not even once. Kidding, the course is great.
I like how one of the programming students is already hard at work editing a lolcat or some kind of kitteh 2:55

Would be great if someone has githubbed course notes, tests, exams for people following this course.
Yeah that would be tremendously helpful.
yup
