This as far as Lynyrd Skynyrd goes, is the video I was told to watch, especially after the Oakland performance that freaking changed my life, you may say this is extreme, but as an artist, that performance let me know that I haven't done sh*t!!!!! Free Bird at Knebworth, and everything that went on that day is fascinating to me. Free Bird no matter how many times i hear it....never grows old.

My 15 yr old son asked me if i could play him one song that is the pure epitome of rock n roll. I played him this song from this concert. What shocked me is he actually GOT IT. He understood. Till that moment he thought Metallica had the best guitarist. I said "Son, i got a whole world to introduce you to". Next week i'll teach him about Hendrix.

Notice Ronnie is physically pushing Allen and Steve to the front , then he waves Gary up and Leon ran out of cord. Leon's bass on both versions is insane. The whole band was more "On" on this version, Ronnie sounded great and it wasn't in the heat in Oakland. There is no question who was in charge. Ronnie. They didn't get near the credit they deserved for their talent. Their individual abilities.

Lynyrd Skynyrd & Ronnie Van Zant were all about “follow THIS!” They worked their asses off for years before they achieved fame. They were also about attitude & were incessantly in trouble for brawling & excessive intoxication. By the time they played Knebworth they, & Ronnie, were getting their act together & reaching a peak of performance excellence. By the time of the band’s plane crash in Oct 1977, they were probably the most exciting live band in the world.

It wasn't that Skynyrd blew the Stones off the stage, but Skynyrd was on earlier and obviously killed in their set. The Stones were the headliner and closed the show but they were late, like 2-3 hours late for their set. They were reportedly wasted and shabby in their performance. So shabby the crowd began to yell for Skynyrd to come back. That pissed them off. They left after maybe a handful of songs. Skynyrd was good in the studio but they were primarily a LIVE band. They practiced their asses off in an old house with no AC they called the Hell House. Ronnie demanded perfection. It showed in their concerts too.

For those of us that lived through those times these songs were like an integral part of what was going on in our lives as everybody had these tunes playing in their cars and in their homes . In my area everyone would be out cruising around with their friends drinking and partying and you'd have the stuff playing in your cars and so was everyone else . I'd jam 4 or 5 chicks into my car and they would all be singing along to the tunes as we rolled all around town .
Every song has some memories attached like the songs that were playing when you'd be parked late night with someone that you were seeing . The 70s and 80s were so freaking great , the bands were amazing and the concerts were incredible , the ones in my area averaged around 18,000 to 20,000 people with fantastic concerts every Friday, Saturday and even on weekdays every week for years .

This is a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert where you want to see each of their songs. T for Texas is a great cover of a 1920's song. The Stones refused to come out for hours while they waited for the frenzy of the crowd to die down.

I agree when I saw them together in Phoenix Az. They blue the Stones away! The Stones were blown away by Ronnie and the boys!

I'm sure the second they said don't play on the tongue the first thought in Ronnie's head was were playing on the tongue. Ronnie was like a great general leading his troops into battle. One thing I always see is Steve Gaines always had a big smile on his face. He truely loved what he did

Don;t walk on my tounge, Ha Ha , we are going to use the whole stage, Ronnie had Balls Man, you can see Ronnie tough the back of Gary Rossington, and said let;s go out there, on the Tounge, Like Ronnie used to say, ''BRING ALL MY MULES OUT HERE;;, the reason that Leon, the bass player did not go all the way out there was because, his guitar chord was not long enough, Rock On, History Here, R.I.P. TO ALL, COUSIN FIGEL

Skynyrd beat the Stones anyway you look at it. I was lucky enough to see them 10 times both before and after being discovered. The are my all time favorite band. Allen is my favorite guitar player. He had so much God given self taught talent. They all did. The first time I heard them was in a club in Atlanta. There were only 5 of them and I thought they were awesome. Still listen to them every day.

Its crazy how the crowd looks almost asleep through the show - even laying out on the ground....until, that is...that THE solo begins....they start clapping....start looking up....start standing....by the end, looked like everyone was on their feet jumping and clapping. Even the show's promoter, backstage, is rumored to have mused aloud...'HOW do you follow that?'
