This as far as Lynyrd Skynyrd goes, is the video I was told to watch, especially after the Oakland performance that freaking changed my life, you may say this is extreme, but as an artist, that performance let me know that I haven't done sh*t!!!!! Free Bird at Knebworth, and everything that went on that day is fascinating to me. Free Bird no matter how many times i hear it....never grows old.

Mick is from England. He didn't know that if you tell a southern boy not to do something that that's exactly what he's gonna do hahahaha.
My god, when Ronnie and the others lost their lives on October 20th 1977...we all lost 😢💔
Mick: Stay off the tongue.
Ronnie: Hold my beer. Let's go boys!
I think if Ronnie could've, he would have wheeled the drums and piano out on that tongue as well!
THANK YOU THANK YOU for recognizing that Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the greatest bands ever! Thank you
"THE GREATEST BAND EVER"
Skynyrd hit the stage that day with only one thing on their minds, to kick the ass of the Stones.
And they did it.
My 15 yr old son asked me if i could play him one song that is the pure epitome of rock n roll. I played him this song from this concert. What shocked me is he actually GOT IT. He understood. Till that moment he thought Metallica had the best guitarist. I said "Son, i got a whole world to introduce you to". Next week i'll teach him about Hendrix.
and remember......no reverb or auto-tune. WE HAD THE BEST MUSIC!
And thats why the Stones took forever to come on stage who wants to follow that performance.
the stones came on late cos 10cc took forever to set up
That's called......."Blowing them OFF THE STAGE!!"
If you ask me, the Stone's had more to worry about, than where the band stood, on the stage, considering the fact, that you never want your opening act to be better than you.
You never tell Ronnie Van Zant not to do something. 😂
True
The "BRITS " did not know what was going to hit them 😄
Long haired country boys change their lives🎤🎼😄😄😄😄💖
Ronnie making his boys come out💀
Some of us did, we'd seen Skynyrd on the Old Gray Whistle Test so we were looking forward to seeing them here. Suffice to say they did not disappoint.
Bass cable ran short on the touge .....DAMN-IT.....HE WANTED in too...😎😎😉😉
And he deserved to be there too. Absolutely superb on the bass.
I love this band but when things get serious Allen Collins takes over and steals the show! The guy is so underrated he was unbelievable!
Yes he was. Collins was a Stone Cold Freak. Freaking G.O.A.T.
Agree! I think a big reason that he is underrated is that his career was so short (and tragic)...passing in 1990. Same year as SRV now that I think about it. Damn, 1990 was s**tier than I thought. 😢
Allen Collins not only played on the tongue, he almost destroyed it.✌️
I agree, Alan Collins is extremely underrated!! In both his playing ability and his song writing!
When ever they create a list of the all-time great guitar players none of the Skynyrd boys get the respect that they deserve! (And they had 4 damn good guitar players in the HOF!)
I heard that they were told that they were not supposed to go onto the tongue as that was Mick's place on the stage. I love that Ronnie was like, "fuck that, get on out here boys" and was pushing Allen and Gary down the tongue. Skynyrd owned the stage that day.
The moment the British Invasion of rock-n-roll ended,Lynyrd Skynyrd, blew the Stones away in their own backyard
My opinion Leon wilkeson is one of them was one of the greatest bass players of all time R.I.P. brother
the Stones were so pissed because the crowd went crazy over Lynyrd Skynrd & Mick refused to come out until the crowd calmed down. i loved it!!!
Skynyrd was the 2nd of 4 bands that day. Then next band up took over 2 hours to set up. No one wanted to follow Skynyrd.
You cannot follow Freebird. I went to Skynyrd opening for ZZ Top. I love ZZ Top, but frankly they don't put on a great show. And they followed Freebird. I actually felt bad for them. The crowd was asleep watching ZZ Top when they just saw Skynyrd.
That was a good old fashioned a-- whooping.
When you said "Rolling Stones, who? How can you say Rolling Stones when you have Lynyrd Skynyrd on the tip of your tongue?" We cheered you, Brother! Truer words have not been spoken.
rocknroll dad-joke
Notice Ronnie is physically pushing Allen and Steve to the front , then he waves Gary up and Leon ran out of cord. Leon's bass on both versions is insane. The whole band was more "On" on this version, Ronnie sounded great and it wasn't in the heat in Oakland. There is no question who was in charge. Ronnie. They didn't get near the credit they deserved for their talent. Their individual abilities.
Jaggers big mistake was telling a bunch of small town boys you can't walk on my tongue if he'd of said nothing it wouldn't be something
I'm glad you mentioned that. You can see Ronnie kept pushing them 😂👄
I would go to this show to see skynyrd, and then leave during the stones to beat the traffic. Lol
Ha ha.... I did the same thing at a Stones concert in Anaheim Stadium in 78. Outlaws played and Half way through the Stones performance we left. Outlaws blew the Rolling Stones away as far as I'm concerned.
I like a few Stones songs but not enough to deal with traffic either! LOL
Hell yeah! You spoke for a multitude !
Right
Hold up I gotta pee!!!!
I read in a music magazine the top 500 rock songs of history. Free Bird was number one. I don't think Jagger can claim that fame!
Simply the best band that ever existed!🦅🦅🦅🦅
The very best jam session of any rock band EVER!!! Not even a competition!!
I love it when Ronnie pushed them down on the tongue and points to Steve to come down too
Lynyrd Skynyrd & Ronnie Van Zant were all about “follow THIS!” They worked their asses off for years before they achieved fame. They were also about attitude & were incessantly in trouble for brawling & excessive intoxication. By the time they played Knebworth they, & Ronnie, were getting their act together & reaching a peak of performance excellence. By the time of the band’s plane crash in Oct 1977, they were probably the most exciting live band in the world.
Jack nicholson was at this concert. Smoked with Skynyrd back stage.
Why am I not surprised? 😉😉
*You could tell Ronnie Van Zant ( Lead Singer ) loved and trusted his band. They were Family.*
Our music was the best!
Rolling who? Love it....who would want to follow that! Allen Collins was on 🔥
Allen Collins SO Underrated
What I liked was the fact the crowd did not know what was coming. They were sitting there or laying down sleeping...then the guitar solo starts. They sat up quick and paid attention to greatness.
Back when we went to music festivals that lasted days, concerts that lasted hours, thousands of people from every walk of life and every skin color and, EVERYBODY HAD A GREAT TIME.
Notice we dont have concerts like that any more
Anything that gives us a common bond is disappearing . Rock didn’t die of natural causes , it was murdered
don"t have music or free people like that any more.
And if we did the ticket prices will kill you nowadays!
thats me and my girlfriend at 2.32 ive got cardboard rolling stones..sun shade on my head lol
Her name's Amanda Grice? She's commented on this video
I think they should play Nationwide every morning every night people need to be reminded especially right now that we are a free people in America and we will not be put in a box pushed into our homes we will not be controlled and that was one of the big messages of the song
¹
I been hearing this song for over 40 years, could never tell you how many times but can say it is always wonderful! Like the first time at something you love, never ever get sick of it🎸
The greatest American band in history .. Rest in Paradise .. Ronnie, Allen, Steve,Leon,Billy, Cassie
one thing about it, don,t dare Ronnie van zant cause he,s gonna do it. uh huh. oh an stomped on that tongue to boot.
That was in your face, 'Merica ! Some are born sheep, and others Rebels.
A- mother-fing-amen to that,my Generation !!💞
Nothing more satisfying when they pissed off the rolling stones
Fuking A ........👍
How about cheers for the old hippie grannies that love these guys!
@@emilyflotilla931 `70s girls were the Best! That whole less is more when make-up was used was Hot...
And the clothes,, Tubetops, Haltertops, and skintight, Bellbottoms or cut-offs (shorts). :)
they opened for the Rolling Stones on this show… And according to the British critics, they “blew the Stones off the stage.“ direct from the liner-notes of this album, ladies and gentlemen.
(and, yes Ronnie. We heard you that time)
When van Halen blew up,a kid asked me if I've ever heard a guitar played that way,,,,oh hell yes, lynyrd skynyrd
Tip of your tongue, ha, ha. I guess Mick Jagger couldn’t get any “Satisfaction” that day. Maybe your greatest reaction of all time? 🔥🔥👍
2 times in history the Rolling Stones were upstaged by the opening act. James Brown in 1964 at the T.A.M.I. show and here by Lynyrd Skynyrd at Knebworth.
Seeing them,so young, and on top of the World,it’s hard to know that the terrible plane crash, that killed Ronnie,Steve and Cassie, was just a year later.
At that moment, they were as close to perfection as a band can be. Free Bird should be the World's battle cry, right frickin NOW!
If music was chemistry... this group had ALL the Elements.
I saw them in Anaheim stadium. March 21, 1976 was was 17. And August 27, 1977 I was 19. Both concerts were unbelievable. October 20, 1977 plane crash. Went into shock and cried. 62 now and I still listen to them all the time.
Loved them then and I still love them NOW. I'm 62 and they are the best. They are better than the Rolling Stones. Their music always moves me...An old man in Tennessee...Ron
The first time I saw Skynyrd, they opened for ZZ-Top...I walked out on ZZ-Top
I remember that tour, had such a second hand high, I fell asleep on ZZ Top, lol…. The joys of indoor nosebleeds….
Gary Rossington (on slide guitar), the last surviving member of the original band will be 71 on December 4th.
I bet The Stones had the same look on their face that you did lol!
Thi is the real best solo guitar of the history of the music ....real best solo guitar epic
Best Skynyrd performance and guitar solo ever period
I’m from Alabama and I love that Ronnie has on a Muscle Sholes Sound shirt on I have that same shirt. Love how he is representing the great state of Alabama in Knebworth.
You like the Bass guitar in this video. Go back to the Oakland performance and check out Leon on the Bass at 15min-39sec to 16min-05sec. He's playin' the Bass like a lead guitar!
It wasn't that Skynyrd blew the Stones off the stage, but Skynyrd was on earlier and obviously killed in their set. The Stones were the headliner and closed the show but they were late, like 2-3 hours late for their set. They were reportedly wasted and shabby in their performance. So shabby the crowd began to yell for Skynyrd to come back. That pissed them off. They left after maybe a handful of songs. Skynyrd was good in the studio but they were primarily a LIVE band. They practiced their asses off in an old house with no AC they called the Hell House. Ronnie demanded perfection. It showed in their concerts too.
And the rumors have it that Skynyrd BLEW the Stones OFF the stage!!!
Thank you for reacting to this version! I looked it up and they say they aren’t sure exactly how many people were there but could be as high as 300,000! I may be a grandmother now but I’m from Jacksonville, Skynyrd’s home town. I still won’t get out of the car if Skynyrd is on my radio. That guitar army gets you every time!
LS at Knebworth is being released remastered audio Blu-ray, DVD CD in April.
Laughing he pulls gary and allen down the forbidden tongue, then gestures come in down to steve and leon the bass. Leon stops short, I have to believe he did not have a 50 foot cable like the guitarists
One of the best live performances ever ☮️
Oakland had far more eye candy than Knebworth, so there's that. Stones in their own greatness were shitting their pants having to follow Skynyrd.
I'm English but Oakland 1 and Knebworth , outside my London 2 but I am a Guy :)
@@kenperk9854 Jimmy Johnson was a legend!
That is because Peter Frampton also played that day.
I'm dying when you noticed that cause I was yelling at you to look at the stage😂😂
They blew the Stones away
I'm 65 years old and had the privilege to see them twice, my favorite band and my favorite song. Still every time I hear this song I have the same feeling that you were describing, watching them play this song I become mesmerized. Its a shame that a plane crash changed the world. FYI you are quickly becoming my favorite reactor, keep up the good work. God bless
I consider this one of the greatest moments in rock history! RVZ was a master!
I tried keeping up with them dancing and couldn’t even do that.. granted my kids started calling me crazy, but I tried anyway.. much love 💕
My grandkids are really laughing, and somewhat befuddled! 🤣
@2:59, THAT beginning where he makes his guitar sound like a bird chirping n then does the "guy whistle" to a girl is STILL SO iconic to me!!💋
This is a much better video than Oakland. They concentrate on showing the band instead of the crowd. And the end was not truncated like the Oakland video. Yet, everyone still reacts to Oakland.
Agree!! I was one of those...until I watched this performance a few days ago. Holy wow!
I am glad someone pointed out that was 'the tongue". This is one of my fav performances live of any band
I love how LIT Ronnie is in this video with that guitar solo which is 🔥🔥🔥🔥The good 'ol days when everything was tight right along with being stoned, intoxicated or both. In 1977 I was 15. I begged and begged my state trooper dad to go to the LSU concert WITHOUT him. So when he finally said yes my bestie & I were ecstatic. The same man who said yes, also told me Ronnie had passed away. To ALL who had the pleasure to see them live, you really witnessed something great. We STILL remember and miss you ✨✨
LOL. I’ll just bet it is hard to say Rolling Stones with Lynyrd Skynyrd on your tongue. I like this performance because it’s longer. The camera didn’t catch Allen jumping as much, but we definitely heard the boy play. 🎶😃
This is honestly one of if not the greatest live performance ever. If someone has a better one plz link it.
Just rewatched the tongue part after you mentioned it. Ronnie walked Allen and Gary out himself then motioned Steve out then Leon who had to stop short due to his cord not being long enough. Dayum!!! You go Ronnie!
Look up how Ronnie wrote songs. He also went barefoot on stage
Ronnie and others gave a call in radio interview after this performance months before the tragedy.
You are right. It is considered to be one of the top ten all time rock songs ever, on many/most lists.
It was definitely a 'high' time to be alive 🤷😂
Long live the 70s!
For those of us that lived through those times these songs were like an integral part of what was going on in our lives as everybody had these tunes playing in their cars and in their homes . In my area everyone would be out cruising around with their friends drinking and partying and you'd have the stuff playing in your cars and so was everyone else . I'd jam 4 or 5 chicks into my car and they would all be singing along to the tunes as we rolled all around town .
Every song has some memories attached like the songs that were playing when you'd be parked late night with someone that you were seeing . The 70s and 80s were so freaking great , the bands were amazing and the concerts were incredible , the ones in my area averaged around 18,000 to 20,000 people with fantastic concerts every Friday, Saturday and even on weekdays every week for years .
Amen sista! 🔥🤘
Did you know that the whole LS band show at the (Knebworth festival) is being released on Blu-ray+DVD+CD+ vinyl in 2021 April, I found the Blu-ray at Amazon.
Cigarette in hand playing guitar !!! Mike, Ronnie’s brother Johnny who is now lead vocalist, looks just like him
The MOST requested song of all time since 1981.
This is a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert where you want to see each of their songs. T for Texas is a great cover of a 1920's song. The Stones refused to come out for hours while they waited for the frenzy of the crowd to die down.
I agree when I saw them together in Phoenix Az. They blue the Stones away! The Stones were blown away by Ronnie and the boys!
I'm sure the second they said don't play on the tongue the first thought in Ronnie's head was were playing on the tongue. Ronnie was like a great general leading his troops into battle. One thing I always see is Steve Gaines always had a big smile on his face. He truely loved what he did
That gave it all every time they played and this concert I think they opened for the stones and blew them off the stage .
Don;t walk on my tounge, Ha Ha , we are going to use the whole stage, Ronnie had Balls Man, you can see Ronnie tough the back of Gary Rossington, and said let;s go out there, on the Tounge, Like Ronnie used to say, ''BRING ALL MY MULES OUT HERE;;, the reason that Leon, the bass player did not go all the way out there was because, his guitar chord was not long enough, Rock On, History Here, R.I.P. TO ALL, COUSIN FIGEL
You said all you needed too when you said its hard to say rolling stones with LS on tip of your tongue....bahahahha...dont you know they was pissed following that??? ❤❤❤❤❤ thank you for showing this!!
Thanks so much for going back! Us old timers knew it would only take once! Unbelievable, tight & ready. Ronnie knew that was their day to kill it & they did!
Your totally right!!!! Best song Ever!!!!
I love watching the reactions of them doing Free bird. The people watching them can't believe what they are hearing and seeing. All I can say is too bad y'all never got to see them because you don't realize what you missed.
Thank you. I agree with you. Glad u decided to view this one. One of the best bands. Talent all around and ronnie ran it like a master
Around 17:30 it looks like Alan is having an Exorcism with his guitar.......
I just checked out the Stones at Knebworth Festival.. They looked and sounded like crap.
SKYNYRD!! SKYNYRD!! SKYNYRD!!
Wish I had known back then how freakin’ Amazing they were!!
I would trade EVERY Stones concert i went to and every album of theirs just to have seen Skynyrd once!!
I felt sort of sorry for Leon, with the short cord.
Ha! I didn't see it was the cord that stopped him.
I also love how he tells Gary to play it pretty for Duane Allman. Just as he did many times.
I never noticed that until I read your comment. Poor guy. He seemed real excited and eager to get out there too. 😆
Skynyrd beat the Stones anyway you look at it. I was lucky enough to see them 10 times both before and after being discovered. The are my all time favorite band. Allen is my favorite guitar player. He had so much God given self taught talent. They all did. The first time I heard them was in a club in Atlanta. There were only 5 of them and I thought they were awesome. Still listen to them every day.
Never knew that fact! Loved him ushering them out on the tongue!!!
"Toe Up From the Flo Up" is right!
Serious Shredding going on! 🔥🤘
I agree when I hear this it takes me back to my teenage years & STOPS TIME 🎶
Most people would say Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama were their best, but my favorite of theirs is Simple Man. If you review it, pull up the one with the lyrics.
Yes, to Simple Man. Wise words from the great philosopher L. Skynyrd.
the humanity in Ballad of Curtis Loew shows the beauty of 1 Ronnie Van Zant ... an american icon n legend.
I love all their songs but have to agree Simple Man is one of the best.
You should react to all songs on this concert. Traveling man. Gimme back my bullets. It's out fuckin standing
Its crazy how the crowd looks almost asleep through the show - even laying out on the ground....until, that is...that THE solo begins....they start clapping....start looking up....start standing....by the end, looked like everyone was on their feet jumping and clapping. Even the show's promoter, backstage, is rumored to have mused aloud...'HOW do you follow that?'
