I restore old furniture. After a particularly long, filthy, challenging day today I thought, "I need to watch Julian Baumgartner clean a painting." Fixing old broken things is important work. It returns beauty to the world that we though was lost - no matter how mildew-and-cobwebby my hair is right now. Thanks for the reminder and inspiration.

I like these paintings because they are a window to what urban environments used to look like before modern times. I think this one might be one of my favorites. I would have loved to have lived in a place like that. One of the things I've fancied for some time now was a sort of google maps street view but instead of our current streets, we'd get a reimagined version of how places used to looked like centuries ago. I know it's impossible without a ton historical knowledge and artistic liberties, but I wish it was a thing.

Your idea of a painting being an avatar for emotions and experiences really hit me. The true value of a painting is usually not in the object itself usually, but in the wealth of memories and emotions that spring up when someone is touched by what the art represents. I have two very amateurish paintings done by my mother, who died nearly fifty years ago, and I would not trade them for anything! I still feel her sweetness and love whenever I look at them, and they would be unlikely to mean much to anyone else. You are a caretaker of memories and experiences, Julian! Thank you!

It was amazing to see the transformation after the lowest level of grime was removed from the painting. Your restoration is beautifully done. Somehow it always seems that fixing something - art, woodwork and even software designs - takes more patience, knowledge, care and technique than the original works, and those who do it well are master craftsmen. You are truly talented.

Holy cow, we haven't seen a painting this dirty in quite a while! That second layer of grime didn't just mute the colors, it completely covered them.

Oh, now that was incredible! I hope that the owners are amazed, just as I am, at the transformation! Fantastic job! Awesome piece of artwork too- the texture and colours are beautiful! Thanks Julian!

What a beautiful painting. I did not expect it to be as bright as it turned out. You continue to perform miracles.

Excellent. All that is missing is a reveal to the owners and their reaction. I love the human flourish that you always focus on.

Did anyone else notice a weird background sound track at 17:16 to about 17:27? It’s a testament to his work that I listen so intently. I played it back three times because I thought I was hallucinating.

This painting is charming in the truest sense of the word. When I look at the restored paint as the artist intended, I feel a sense of calm. The colours, the figures, the buildings. I could”live” in that scene. Thank you, Julian. This is a magical miracle or miraculous magic, take your pick. Always so exciting when I see that you have posted a new video!

I sometimes imagine that the figures covered by the dirt and varnish seemed like they were in a fog. Then you clean and restore the picture and the characters can suddenly see the world around them again. Just as we can see them again. I like your work and explanations.

I am cleaning, repairing, and touching up my grandmother's painting. She never was schooled. It is all raw talent. I did take college classes in art and painting. What amazes me the most with this process is how each day I work a little on the painting and the in-between times freak me out. The painting is not changing. It is only coming back to its original state. Somehow my grandmother's techniques I can see and replicate. So that when I do come back, I barely can see what I have done other than the fact that where I have been, the painting is coming back to life. Spooky to me. My grandmother and I had similar talents in similar areas of technique, color choice, texture, shading, and application. AMAZING and SPOOKY> but I am glad it is a success. I was so frightened. Some paint had fallen off. Some paint was damaged by the woodstove my parents used for all those years. I do remember as a very young boy what the painting looked like fresh from Grandma. Now it is back. She did never varnish her painting so after 6-7 months when I am finished, I will varnish it. I just wish to find a varnish with no color at all. No yellow tint and will stay clear. If you have a good suggestion on the type of varnish, please let me know. By the way, the seamlessness between what I touch up and repaint matches completely with those areas I do not have to touch at all. I am blown away.

It seems like lately I've been encountering substandard work by apathetic amateurs all over the place. Watching you, a loving master, lifts my soul. Thank you!
