    If you bought the ROSCOE 7 don't feel bad, on paper of course all those specs are worth it, but in real life you won't feel the difference unless you are paying attention to all those details. Enjoy the ride!

    I recently bought the 7 after trying both back to back. Personally I couldn’t tell a great difference in the drivetrain and suspension. The biggest difference was the hub engagement. After spending a day with both though the 8 wasn’t true instant engagement and truly not worth the price increase to me. I can gladly ride the 7 and upgrade as needed.

    I notice a lot of comments from people who don't understand the word "budget" Of course the more expensive bike is bound to have better parts and potentially more value, but some people don't have $3000 to spend on a 9, They can however afford the 7 and maybe in another year can afford a better fork, or afford better brakes and still get a year of riding in while earning their way to a better bike. For a lot of people, they may not even know what to look for in the differences between parts. Some people are just buying bikes so they can ride. We have gotten to a point where their is so much snobbery when it comes to what you ride... Anyone who bought a 7 and is loving it should ignore anyone who said "You should have bought this or that" or "You're gonna have to pay so much more in the end and should have just bought this instead" ... Ignore them. They only focus on spec and forget about budget and the fact that you are still riding regardless of what you bought. I was just getting into mountain biking back in 2019 and bought a budget Kona XC bike.. QR wheels, cheap hubs, cheap bb and cranks.. cheap everything really... hell, it has a rockshox 30 silver fork... I still ride it today and I still have so much fun on it.. I've upgraded parts as I went and don't feel bad about not buying a more expensive bike at the time because of the fun I have had with it and the experience of making it my own... The grips, brakes, drivetrain, rear hub, and seat post have all been upgraded and I still love riding it today. Just enjoy what you can afford and get your bike to where you want it to be when you can.. :)

    Tried the 8 yesterday…it’s definitely nice, but I think prices are out of hand. Manufacturers have to realize that lockdown is over and people aren’t scrambling to buy bikes anymore. Trek and Specialized are pricing out seasoned riders, (read: repeat customers), and losing them to smaller brands like Ragley and Canyon, who make similar specced bikes at a better price point.

    I recently bought a 7. Ended up coming up with a new takeoff fox performance 34 locally for $400 which I think is a better fork than the Rockshox 35 anyway. Replaced the front rotor with a 203 mill. Put Renthal fat bars on but that was mostly to get more rise. So I’m in it for roughly $500 extra at this point but I got a better fork and spent some money to tailor it to me. Now I don’t have the four piston brakes or quick engagement hub but those items aren’t important to me or at least not yet. Maybe in time. Still happy I chose the 7 overall.

      If you are going to spend all that extra $ and still thinking of spending more you should’ve gone for the 8 at least and probs the 9. It’s a false economy to do it the way you have done. Yours is a classic case of buying the lower spec, but not being happy and really wanting the higher spec all along and then trying to play catch up with what you’ve bought and trying to make amends. Far better to bite the bullet and buy the higher spec from the get go.

    I think Trek missed the mark on the R8 with the drive train, fork and brakes. The Deore (6100) brakes are a better brake. A lower level Pike or Revelation would have been a better way to go. Both are upgradable, unlike the 35. On the drive train they should have stayed with the Deore.

    I have a Roscoe 7 pre-ordered since the end of last year. First, I absolutely love the color scheme but I also simply don't have the budget for the Roscoe 8 atm. Since I'm also a beginner I don't think the 32mm stanchions will be a problem to start with. Brakes would probably have to be swapped on both bikes which I'll probably do rather sooner than later so the only thing I really miss is the high engagement hub. However, the Shimano FH-MT510 freehub at least comes with Shimano Quick Engagement, so 32 or 38 points of engagement so at least it's not completely terrible.

    Trek increased the prices last week of the Roscoes appx. $70.00 per bike. I looked at the 7, 8, and 9. For me the 32 mm stanchions on the 7 fork are too thin and the Shimano 200 brakes are marginal at best. The 8 is better with the 108 POE on the rear hub and has a beefier 35 mm front shock but IMHO still lacks on braking with the Shimano 4000 series brakes. The 9 has way better 6000 series 4 piston brakes and a Fox Rhythm 36 shock. Thats more like it. The people that buy a 7 with intentions of upgrading will have to spend almost 1100 just to get a fox 36mm shock, plus another 3 ro 4 hundred to get shimano 6000 series brakes and 203 front and 180 rear rotors. For me it was a no brainer. I bought the 9. Nothing needs upgraded on that bike. Buy once, cry once , and you are done.

    The Recon forks have steel stantions - so even though they are only 32mm and not 35mm they still have plenty of strength (in the same way steel frames can be thinner than aluminium frames) and I have not noticed much difference to the Yari fork I had on my previous bike which had 35mm stantions. There may be a very small amount of extra flex but it is very hard to tell - so not a major difference. The main benefit of upgrading a fork which I hope to do in the future is to save weight and have a better air spring and damper. I will be looking at a basic Pike which will save nearly 400g in weight and should have a plusher suspension action. The 35 is still a basic fork and is a similar weight to the Recon so has a very marginal advantage. Not worth upgrading to in my opinion.
    Another area of concern with the 8 and something I have experienced with a previous bike is the NX cassette. It is very expensive to replace and this is a part that will need replacing. The deorre cassette gives better shifting, is slightly lighter and cheaper. I am glad my 7 has deorre and I have simply added an XT shifter to have a fantastic drivetrain. This gives much better shifting than the NX shifter with multi shifts possible both up and down.
    Otherwise a good review but as others have said if you can only afford the cheaper bike the real world differences are small and you can pick the upgrades you want when you can afford them.

  • @jmounce50
    @jmounce50 Před rokem +2

    Both bikes are nice but unfortunately with the economy I’d go 7 - I have noticed a few other reviews where the cranks have varied so I’m guessing Trek is having problems sourcing Deore cranks which are the spec’s on the websites. I think to me crossing over the 2000.00 price point I’d just try to go to a full suspension MTB.

    • @Mapantz1
      @Mapantz1 Před rokem +2

      The trouble with that is, you end up with a poor spec full sus. You'd need to go beyond 3000 to match specs.

  • @mikeburton8426

    OK, I’ve never heard of this before so help me out. To change from one cassette to another, both the same number of cogs, I need to change the freehub body? Is that true or an error. I’ve been swapping cassettes for decades and never heard of this. If I switch to a better level cassette that has a larger big ring will it still work with the freehub body that fits the 10? All that said, I’m not sure there would be a ton of times I would need a 10 over an 11.

    • @Jamesthebikeguy
      @Jamesthebikeguy  Před rokem +4

      The New 12 speed cassette use (1) of three different freehub.
      The 12speed drivetrains that have the smallest tooth of 11 will use a standard "Shimano HG" freehub.
      12speed Shimano Deore and up with a 10tooth cog use something called "Shimano Microspline"
      12speed SRAM cassette that have a 10tooth cog use the "SRAM XD Driver"
      So you can swap cassette just like the old days if they use the same type of freehub. In this case the limiting factor is Trek used a NX cassette that mounts on a HG freehub and not compatible with better quality higher range cassettes.
