This is a very well-made video. Thank you for taking the time to do it. I would have found this video much more helpful though if you focused more on "why" things were done. For instance, what is the purpose of the spacers? You say they're optional, but that you always use them, but never tell us why, despite spending one quarter of the entire video showing us how to put them in. What happens if we don't use them? What difference does it make to use four instead of three?

Hi, thanks for the tips! I've made three pieces, but when they got of the loom, they are a bit bubbly, what can be the cause? The warp is not too tight, not too loose... I used yarns with different kind of thicknesses.

Would you say warp yarn is a good material for bracelet making?
Thank you for this video! I recently received a basic loom, and has not the piece you wrap your weft around but a needle. How do I estimate the amount of weft yarn from the beginning, and how do I do it with only a needle?
The piece used to pass the weft through the loom's warp is called a shuttle, and it literally only holds your weft material so you don't have to pass a loose bundle of yarn through the "shed" (the gap created in the warp by using the shed stick). You can use a needle, but the idea is being able to slide your weft yarn through relatively quickly and very accurately. A needle is certainly very accurate, but likely quite slow.
Estimating weft yarn is a little tricky, but the basic formula is: Length (of finished piece) * Width (of finished piece) * PPI (picks per inch, which is related to how your loom is warped). Length and Width should both be expressed in inches for continuity of units. Divide the answer by 36 if you want yardage, and remember the rule of estimating: add a little for future errors. :)
What was the purpose of the "spacers" that she started with?
Its for tightening the warp yarns so that when you're weaving, the main threads won't loosen while you pull on them through the project.
Looks great, thank you but wondering why you wouldn't keep the 2nd shed in and use it rather than pick through each warp thread when you go back the other way. I'm just learning so maybe I'll discover why.
If you tie the ends of every other thread to one stick and the others to another, you can lift these up each time… you secure the sticks so they keep the threads steady but allow them to move up or down when you want.
@@louisegogel7973 Thank you yes I tried that and it was more frustrating/slower than just going back and forth between the threads. "secure the sticks" hmm. Maybe that's the operative phrase. Not sure how that could be achieved. I just pulled the stick taut with one hand and tried to manoeuvre the yarn through the shed with the other. Need more hands lol.
@@taniakol The sticks themselves wouldn’t have to be secured onto anything as long as the end of the warp is secure. This way one can loop any number of desired strings onto separate sticks to lift as needed for whatever pattern is desired.
The setting up would be the most time consuming part, but once achieved would make listing each of the layers a breeze. I would color code, number, or label the sticks for which strings they are lifting. You could of course make any number of cardboard or wooden heddles for the lifting instead of looping string around your warp threads.
@@louisegogel7973 Thank you, if you know of a vid that shows the 2nd stick method that would be great. I was looking and couldn't find one. As I said I did it and it was very frustrating - tying every other warp thread onto a stick, and then attempting to pull that stick away with one hand, trying to keep the warp threads taut enough to put the yarn through the shed with the other hand.. Maybe it was harder because I had the frame vertical, on a stand, rather than flat on a table, I don't know, but it didn't work for me.
@@taniakol Hmm, I think that is why she has that blade in there, to hold the thread apart after you life the stick. I will look and see what I can come up with.
What do I do w the fabric after I get done weaving?
Can you use embroidery thread for the warp? That’s all I have for something like the warp.

(Short answer: In these times, just experiment, use what you have and give it a try. Perhaps sample with a smaller loom style (maybe make a small pin loom) to see how many ends you need for the design and what’s the best weft. Below are some tips🌻)
The warp should hold the weft yarn in place- so, the way I check the strength of the warp is by pulling on the 2 ends of the yarn. If the yarn can withstand the pressure, then its ok.
Now, embroidery thread is really thin, but sturdy. Perhaps using yarn that is also thin for weft could work- and increasing the number of ends per inch when dressing the loom.

Scissors! The warp ends will need knotting or binding to prevent unraveling.

Hello I have been weaving for a few months now and I have no idea how to finish it. I have been trying to ends off after cutting it off the loom but it just falls apart. So I tried to wet finish it and it still doesn't work. I have been using acrylic and polyester yarn. Do Synthetic yarns not work?
Great question! You can use various fibers and materials to weave, but creating a secure base is key. When you start, secure the first row with the twining pattern. And, the last row of weaving should be a row of twining- this will secure the weft ends when you cut the weaving off or display it.
After you remove the weaving from the loom, you must secure the ends. I have a video on 6/7 ways to secure and display weaving and a tutorial on twining. I will leave links in the description shortly! :) I hope this helps!

I’m so confuse on the page picture is normal loom but you go in and it’s a handmade one.
What do the spacers do? They just seem to sit at the bottom of the project and I can’t see their purpose.

This might sound really silly, but what are the spacers for? I don’t understand their purpose. 🙈
There are a few helpful things that the spaces can do. 1. Help hold the place of the first few strands of weft (so that it isn't sliding down). 2. Space out the warp yarns. The warp needs some support when you first start weaving.On a frame loom they often need a few rows to help space out. Using some form of spacers give the warp some space to straighten out and keep their space away from each other. Hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions about it! :)
