i think during the slave part bo was actually making a commentary on how people will defend things in the bible by making analogies and misconstruing what was in the bible to make it seem better because the verse he was referring to was talking about buying and selling slaves and at the end when he mentions that he brushes over it kinda like how religious figures will brush over the bad things in the bible
yeah, there's clearly a ton of fucked up stuff in the bible because of how old fashioned it is, so people now will say things like 'IT WAS METAPHORICAL'

Seems like a good compromise rather than changing the text (which would probably be blasphemy or something).
@@RightDenied no. Firstly, changing sacred text is blasphemous and the cause of different factions of the same religion. Secondly, pretending it isn't meaning what it's saying because it's inconvenient to the modern moral narrative doesn't work for the exact reason pointed out in the rant - it's easy enough to switch it into a metaphor but you can't hide the extreme details or act like they were kidding.

When Bo was talking about slavery.. he was making fun of it. He defends the bible talking about slavery as being okay by making up a metaphor that God was talking about metaphorical slavery. But then in the next line, Bo says "and then as god goes on to explain the logistics of buying and selling slaves" ... so it wasnt a metaphor it was just the old people who wrote the book not having the foresight to see that slavery is immoral and would be looked down upon in the future.
You'd think an all-knowing and all-loving God would let us know... hey, don't enslave people.. but here we are lol

The Old Testament Bible never said God was all-loving. Not even once. It VERY clearly says that God merely loves humanity JUST ENOUGH to not wipe it off the roadmap. There was that ONE passage in the New Testament that says God is Love. But then it goes to God punishing humanity again, so.... And then the evangelical feel-good Christians were born somewhere in the what, 18th, 19th century? Then everybody was like, "God is all-loving, woohoo." Part of the reason is the Christ-Cult of the New Testament has a VERY DIFFERENT character than the strict I-don't'really-care-about-you-but-if-you-must-have-these-things-then-mmkay-here-some-rules-now-don't-mess-it-all-up-too-hard-or-I-screw-you-over attitude of YHWH of the Old Testament.

44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.
And the fact that the modern church tries to whitewash it's history by trying to make it seem metaphorical.
Not as bad as the verse in Deuteronomy that says if you rape a woman, you pay her dad and she becomes your wife.

I think people rationalize slavery because the stigma of it in America.....Slavery is legal right now in many countries....Lets stop all slavery worldwide and free the imprisoned before we sympathize with those whos already been freed.
The slavery thing: the Bible has sections where it tells you how you should act regarding buying and selling slaves, and it doesn’t say “never do it, it’s wrong”. And Bo describes a priest’s attempt to make it sound less bad by saying “well it’s like a metaphor because it’s saying we all have a slave in our hearts” or something. Then the Bible goes on to talk about the actual logistics of buying and selling slaves in very concrete terms, and the priest is like “yeah Jesus was messing around, it’s a joke” and then trails off awkwardly.
Bo Burnham was VERY anti-religion in 2010, like a lot of progressive people. Also like a lot of progressives, he has chilled out about it a lot now. I fit the pattern too, being only a couple of years older than him. I really feel like he’s the voice of a generation.

I don't know what you were getting at with the Lupe reference, but the Garageband string sample Bo uses here was also famously used in "Believe Me" by Fort Minor, and Lupe did guest on some FM tracks
Edit: Does sound like that sample is used in "Prisoner 1" too, though it starts on the 2, while Bo and FM start it on the 1

Not a biblical scholar although I grew up with it. Can't go into the specific verse, someone else does. But a ton of catholic & Christian nations have practiced slavery. From the very first one, the Romans. The bible has a whole lot to say about slavery, the jews are enslaved 3 times in the bible, 2 historically (the moses story is almost certainly fiction) and it comes up a bunch outside that in side stories. In all that page space dedicated to slavery it never says its a bad thing, never says its a sin, never says it should be opposed. People have lived by the bibles teachings for 2000+ years and the vast of them agreed that slavery was pretty chill. American slaveowners and slavery supporters all held up the bible to explain that slavery was totally fine.

Not related to Bo or your reactions to him but man, I can't thank you enough for turning me on to Lupe Fiasco after mentioning him on a couple of your videos. I'd heard the name before because, well, being an FGC guy (Guilty Gear represent!), I definitely heard about him beating Daigo in a SF5 exhibition, but I never sat down and listened to his music before. I'm no hip hop expert (cough white guy who mostly listens to rock and weird electronic/industrial music cough) but he's fucking brilliant. I get the same kind of vibes from him as I do listening to Common, Black Star, The Roots or Saul Williams, all of whom I consider brilliant minds who meld true street poetry and music together perfectly.

There are actually numerous mentions of slavery in the Bible. The passage he is referring to is in gospels, a story about Jesus healing the slave of a centurion which later was explained as being metaphorical to spiritual slavery. Later in Matthew, Jesus compares the relationship of God and man to that of a master and his slaves at least twice.

My parents were Jehovah's witnesses I had to go to the theocratic ministry School when I was younger Leviticus 45 actually speaks about keeping slaves and keeping them under control which goes against any kind of Christianity so yeah hit me up if you want to know more.

The old testament has a bunch of logistical stuff about slave owning. Slavery was the way of all of mankind up until a few hundred years ago. In the bible times and locals, you could 'sell' yourself into slavery to pay off debt. It was 7 years I think. Then it talks about how you are to treat your slaves and all that kind of stuff. Crazy stuff. It doesn't really say that it's 'okay' or that slavery is 'good'. It just accepts without question that slavery is a part of life, and has rules for how to do it right. Like, "Only whip them a reasonable amount if they're misbehaving. Nothing overkill."
But none of that stuff is 'Christian' anyway, because Jesus did away with all those old ways. Old Testament isn't Christianity. Except for the one verse in the new testament that says the old testament is still good for advice and rules and stuff. Crazy shit.

He’s basically saying that people today twist around verses in the Bible and turn them into lengthy metaphors so you think they mean something completely different then what it actually means so you don’t get offended by it and see it in a good light. Basically that’s him just turning the slavery verse into a lengthy metaphor so it sounds way less worse then it actually is but it has the same meaning

In Exodus 21 God advocates for slavery and gives rules on how to own another human being as property. You can beat your slave as long as they don't die within a couple of days. You can pass them on to your children. It has nothing whatsoever to do with indentured servitude. People need to stop reading "between the lines" and start actually reading the lines.
