- With all of these Batman releases, will McFarlane continue to get better and better or will we continue to see the same problems just presented in different character designs?

Most of Hasbro's shortfalls come from lazy, cheap re-use. Todd puts more tooling, sculpting, engineering and general work/money into these oddly proportioned monstrosities than anyone in the game. If someone over there knew how long human legs are supposed to be we might get a couple cool figures.
Absolutely right, there is some dumb ass dude in McFarlane's team making awful decisions from ignorance and maybe lazyness. I don't think is Todd's blame at all, tho he is responsible for not being in there supervising designs.
@@sirmustardofhousemayonnais9907 I concur
I agree.
It really is a shame he is stuck on the same bizarre aesthetic for EVERY figure. It would be fine if only certain figures had an exaggerated look. The animated figures for example warrant them. Todd is also pumping characters people want, it’s just a shame they look weird.
@@winstonsmith3370 totally agree … there’s like a new Batman every month lol
The weird long legs are definitely so he can be posed on the horse properly. He looks very natural on the horse, but odd just standing there. I’m waiting for the invariable 50% off sale for the rest of this wave- I was estatic to pay $50 for the Endless Winter BAF figures last week (though the new Comic Book Black Adam blows that one away), but there’s no chance I would pay $100 for basically any of these waves. It is nice at least that the BAFs are only 4 figures.
At first I thought your commentary was off-base, but when you did the side-by-side of Original vs. Adjusted - my mind was blown. You're absolutely correct.
Happy to shed some light
Really like this one, was just bothered ab the poor articulation and weird thigh to shoulder ratio. Still very much like the asthetic though.
I think a big problem with recent McFarlane figures is that they suck with replicating other art styles. If the source material fits McFarlane's own style (e.g., the Metals), they can shove them into his aesthetic well enough. But when trying to replicate styles beyond that, it just doesn't work. You get stuff like the DCAU figures or this, which feel like they're either misremembering the art style or actively fighting against it.
Im so desensitized from marvel legends that this figure actually looks good to me
I mean it has all the same problems though
The one time we get thigh swivels AND fist hands... of course McF finds a bunch of different things to screw up 🤦♂️ I don't think I'd be quite as harsh on this figure but it's baffling how they keep messing things up for no good reason...
I really like Todd and I guess most ppl that know a thing or two about him like him too. Why do I say this? Because I believe this combined with the important fact that these are very affordable figures that seem pretty cool at a brief first glance makes the costumers really bias: they basically WANT to like this line because the asking price is reasonable & you can often see some effort went into making them. They just look more inspired and artistic than a lot of marvel legends. Unfortunately, the joints/accoesiores are usually a problem and proportions look OFF, such is the case with this Batman. Even in a good day, some McFarlane releases look like decent static figures with primitive engineering. There ARE some exceptions: I still remember Azrael being a GREAT release and Swamp Thing exceeding expectations but overall that is my overall impression of the line.
My biggest issue is those thunder thighs are too big, he looks so odd.
Looking forward to you ripping apart Ravager Thor. Dude is proportioned like 6'10 with 65% of the height in the legs lol.
This is a "Bulk" Batman accurate with the comic...love this figure
The torso is not meant to go forward and backward, I tried doing that, and it snapped on me. It is only meant to swivel left and right, which is very unfortunate as I wanted to get him in his hunching position, just wanted this to be known so nobody breaks theirs like I did mine :|
I got him and I didn't like how long the legs are, because they could have made the torso a bit more in the same size. But besides that, I didn't actually like the thigh swivel in this case because his hip swivel works very well and the thigh swivel isn't necessary at all. His face looks really good.
Your comment of sharing to let everyone know how bad it was made me laugh haha
I don't know about anybody else but I prefer my action figures to have long legs as opposed to short ones. I'm still disapointed with my NECA Homelander that has (in my opinion) three great headsculpts and upper body mold but terribly short legs. Sigh...
I've taken apart a bunch of the recent mcfarlane figures and the reason they all have shit range is bc they dont put the hole for the double ball peg in the upper torso in the middle and have it hollowed out like youre supposed to... they have the hole in the fucking front of the torso (at an angle too) with ZERO clearance/space for room at all. the rest of the figures in this wave have that same engineering (minus robin) which makes every single figure in this wave have like 0 ab crunch at all (of the 4 figures, robin has the most ab crunch and even then its using a rubber overlay)
This is correct. It's really weird.
Yeah, I don't know why but they've shifted where the joint in the torso comes down towards the front. And it's been like that on all the new figures I've looked at from multiverse. So no matter how much plastic you shave you can't really fix the ab crunch without re-centering the actual joint.
If you trim the abdomen some it'll help. But yeah, the top part is fubar.
@@AnthonysCustoms oh, I tried, but the angle the ball joint comes down at is all wrong, and it seems to be line wide now. I'm currently converting a dark father to a classic darkseid and I basically had to cut out the entire front of the rubber insert to get even a little bend. You can still increase the range at the lower section of the abs but it looks weirder and stresses the belt rubber.
My favorite part of your videos is the amazing photography at the end. I love seeing your poses because a) they look awesome, and b) I am into figure photography and I get inspiration by them. Keep it up!
I think the giant space in the middle of his butt maybe was made to hold and hidden the batarang...
Todd is a visionary man... no doubt about it...
HA HA HA
This is the best interpretation of dark knight returns batman after mafex imo. Yeah the proportions are off but if you read the book the art is like that multiple times. The stature looks like he can fight superman not like the ape stature of mafex. At the price point the sculpt is pretty good. Overall a great figure imo. Play arts kai and mattel doesn't come even close. Play arts kai doesn't even feels like miller dark knight returns batman. The wrinkles in this figure is accurate.
hes never consistently drawn with giant legs and a tiny chest.
@@AnthonysCustoms 😂no it's not consistent but it's there sometimes.
Yep, Fat Batman's one of my favorites - both the design and Frank Miller's (original) story. Thanks for the review! Glad I have both the black and blue MAFEX versions, lol.
The wrist joints on mine feel loose like the hands rotate really easily not sure if it’s supposed to be that way or if mine is loose
Is his head slightly off centered to the left, our right when looking at the figure?
I'm just glad I wasn't the only one laughing about how you could build "a horse!"
Hey Anthony! Love your reviews! Side note: I would customize my figures with Testors Acryl paints (for over 13 years now.) The company has done away with producing them and they're getting harder to find. What do use/recommend for your customs?
I stocked up before they stopped but i also use citadel and tamiya
I really love this figure. Its looks natural when Im posing it I don't bother the long legs
I like you’re review’s you’re very honest. Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot
Based on my opinion, I love this Batman.
He looks buffed and so strong. By the way, thanks for the honest review. Keep it up! 😊
I love short fat squatty batman and this is not short, fat, nor squatty. I haven't read the comics in a while but I'm pretty sure he was quite chunkier in them, like he wasn't fat, he was just massive, an absolute unit. And the ears on the cowl while small were still noticeable. When I saw this from the side I thought I was looking at Space Ghost's head or something.
Loved the movie adaptations to the point that I'm even making a custom Mutant Leader, so I was really looking forward to this one as a spot filler. I could get over the proportions because it doesn't seem too bad when posed, and I could get over the torso range because modifying it for better articulation seems easy enough, but 8:28 is so utterly bewildering that I refuse to buy this simply because a sculpt like that was actually cleared for mass production. I just can't get over the absurdity there. Yeah, it'd be easy to resculpt but of all the things a customer shouldn't have to do at this price point, resculpting Batman's butt is one of them.
Completely disagree on this guy but appreciate the McF reviews either way, so take your thumbs up
You got me into collecting play arts Kai. I have the heath ledger joker, Arkham joker, Robin, fat batman, Deathstroke just to name a few. I've been watching you for years now. I really miss your play arts Kai reviews but those figures did get very expensive and had many issues. I mainly stopped buying them because you stopped reviewing them lol
I wish they were worth getting but the quality went down as fast as the price went up
@@AnthonysCustoms such a shame because they did have a lot of potential. Some of the figures were great. Honestly, you did save me so much money with your reviews. Ever since I started watching you years ago, I wait until you reviewed a figure to decide if I want to buy it or not. I feel like you're the only person that I actually trust when it comes to reviews
lol, as an old man I can tell u that is an accurate body shape for a guy (like me) who spent 20+ years in actual combat. If you had to hand carry 2.75 rockets up hill both ways you would be hunched forward too.
I think the huge legs are for the horse, they couldn’t be bothered to adjust I guess.
Was the word you were looking for to descríbete cape “embossed” ?
Nope.
Youre slapping this figure pretty hard, but I must say, I personally like it a lot for the pricerange its in. Maby the modellers looked at TDKR2, were Millers style went from grotesque to surreal. ;) Great vid, appreciated!
thanks a lot
Woof, thank you for the warning on this! I just found a few of him at one of my local retailers and was considering if the price savings over a Mafex would be worth it but clearly not!
The abdominal part is reversed, just like the Batman fig from the movie, i flipped it upside down and it allowed the fig to swivel side to side, and it corrected the proportions, the torso looks bigger so the legs no longer look like the legs of a giant
Speaking of long legs, the new Page Puncher Black Adam from DC Direct has the legs longer than the rest of the body, Wonder Woman 84 style
This version of batman is awesome, wish it was blue and grey with battle damage that would be cool
My favorite McFarlane Batmans are probably Flashpoint, Rebirth and White Knight, love these 3 figures, ngl.
That said, I've been collecting McFarlane figures for a while, and you really have to be picky with them, some figs are great, some are atrocious. As a big Dark Knight Returns fan that has been looking for a nice set for a while (without having to pay like a 100 bucks each for the Mafex), this one sure ain't it...
Edit: also, keep up the good work, I love how honest you are and each time I'm on the fence, I check if you've got a review of the fig ;)
Happy to help
Cool stuff man but Just curious how is the rival collectibles coming along dying to have one of my own man unless I missed the launch date :/ :(
Still working on it
I’m bidding on one of these so I can re work it and make the blue/grey Batman with the bandolier on his right thigh.
I like the old man Batman.
I know this The Dark Knight Returns Batman is not 100% perfect But to me, I need him so I can put him with Carrie Kelly Robin to fight the Joker and I need the single release armored Batman to fight Superman so I can have two The Dark Knight Returns displays, As always great review Anthony.
I have the grey/blue mafex DKR batman so I was going to get this to have a grey/blk version but I couldn't pull the trigger even at $25
i like unorthodoxed reviews like these..
1:03- "Frank"-ly. Pun Intended.
Great review!!!! Stay professional and maintain fidelity, thanks!
I knew the articulation was bad and I wasn't fully sold on the looks your edit image clearly look better but gotta said he looks more than ok in the photos at the end
It’s definitely got some flaws but I kinda like it 🤷♂️
I've been telling you to get the Zombie Cap ML, and now I'm afraid you're gonna think it's bad if you ever end up reviewing it XD.
Personally I thought this figure looked fine, I don't have it cause I don't like the source material, but I wouldn't have imagined know you wouldn't like it.
Hi Anthony ,which mcfarlane batman to date is the best ?
Yesterday's video based on the ones I've reviewed. Or the azrael one. Can't remember what that's called
I mostly like the figure. In package i was pretty blown away. No shot ever am i buying a mezco figure. This will due.
Definitely one of the most popular in DC Multiverse figures lately. Hafta disagree with you on this one...
I hate bicep swivel being in the elbow. It is ugly as hell
Being popular doesn't make it good though.
Mafex still did it the best
is it as it should be , love it .
What are you seeing man? This figure is like it came out of the graphic novel. Accuracy spot on, I am very pleased with my purchase.
Respectfully, the proportions on this figure look nothing like the source material. His legs are hysterically long and his chest is tiny. The expression on his face and the fact that he's thick are basically accurate, but it has a ton of issues. Compare to the Mafex version.
@@smyers9052 I don't know. I mean I didn't put the graphic novel and the figure side by side and compare them but from what I remember is accurate. I usually don't nitpick my figures that much...
@@szen2869 That's fair enough man, bottom line is you like the figure.
i really like frank miller batman, he's really cool and huge, love me some huge batman
I cant take Mezco seriously, I think folks who buy those stuff either likes The robot chicken aesthetic or just has plain PJ fetish.
I agree, personally
I do like this batman design
There’s a joke in the crotch shot of the trading card and how nutty the photoshop is
I would like this figure if it had different legs
Butt crack for days!! - Anthony
Best line ever
He's accurate to source material in terms of proportions on some panels, Idk I think it's great.
He's not even close to the source material. Not even a little bit.
@@AnthonysCustoms Some of his artwork is different to the other page.
Mafex did it the best
look at the legs
Dude the legs alone are a deal breaker...chest is also not right.
Yes, big fan of the Dark Knight Returns look. This doesn't do it justice though.
I’m laughing more at the Anthony ROAST 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Not sure what you're referring to. Time stamp?
@@AnthonysCustoms starting around 1:03 mark until around the 1:07 mark
Gotcha lol. Hope all is well
@@AnthonysCustoms It’s absolutely incredible… I pray the same for you and your family 🦾
AS ALWAYS EXCELLENT REVIEW.
I totally agree the proportion is terrible, it is the reason I have not bought it, I would like to build a horse but it is very poorly done especially how close the front legs are, it is a shame, THE DARK KNIGHT is one of my favorite BATMAN stories , I love animated movies, I just hope Mc Farlane takes note and makes THE DARK KNIGHT RETURN version in Blue and Gray with all the improvements.
To be honest, I think the DC animated The Dark Knight Returns part 1 and 2 movies are comic accurate to the Frank Miller comics and while I don't like the comics in general, I do feel bad that Bruce Wayne aka Batman and Clark Kent aka Superman are old.
Wao I thought it was good but thanks for the observations
Yeeeaaaah I’ll just pay more and get the Mafex, but yes big fan of the Miller design and comic, not my absolute favourite of all time but it’s a top five for me.
Interested in the hazmat suit batman?
I guess Todd really never skips legs day😂
Zur en arrh Batman is my favorite one so far. The articulation is more functional and just the design its self I really love. But I guess that means another company could do it better but I’ll still the macfarlane one
I too like the design of fat Batman. Greatly enjoyed your review as usual Anthony! Love the photoshop comparison 💯🤟😽
A horse is pretty funny
Ya legs on this one are looking crazy.
Hello Anthony. If possible, you could review Future Trunks (DB Super) from the Dragon Ball Evolve Series. At least for me, it is a great figure for the price point and the best in the evolve series.
Keep up the great work!
Sorry. I don't have plans to get into that line right now
@@AnthonysCustoms Understandable :). Thanks for the reply!
I miss ToyBiz.
I don't know this figure but personally I can't say a figure is bad from a customizer standpoint but out the box it's alright could be worse
are you doing Zurr-en-arr Batman??
Whoever was in charge of the buttcrack also put in work on the ChestBat.
Good luck unseeing that now.
Batcrack
This figure looks like grandpa Batman with pants up to his belly.
How come this has a thigh swivel but like 98% of DC Multiverse lack it wtf
That Batman looks like a giant Acme Anvil fell on his head leaving him with a tiny torso and neck.
The Joker with the David Byrne big suit looks just as ridiculous. I kinda want the horse but the figures even on sale are hardly justifiable.
I was excited for a TDK Batman figure and somehow missed every photo of it online. First time I was the box in store I was excited, picked up the box, and laughed when I saw the figure. The paint job is minimal, and the articulation is poor. A real disappointment.
The non functioning upper part of the ab crunch and the lack of bicep swivels made me hate this figure. He is very limited with posing.
Batman doesn't skip leg day
Ahhhh yes thick Batman
It has such long legs because it is designed to ride the horse
That's not a great reason
I’m quitting mcfarlane toys Anthony’s customs and I’m moving to mafex
I perfer the mafex one it’s much better and has a sick cape
I giggled so hard at the buttcrack part and immediately felt disappointed in myself
I wanted to get this figure, but I think I'll pass after watching your review.
At the very beginning of the video I was like "oh, his legs are super long, wonder if Anthony will talk about that" and you did, lol.
I'll try to get the MAFEX if I can, that one definitely looks better.
Chonky Batman is a cool design.
Somebody seriously needs to get the DC master toy license the fuck away from McFarlane already!
I swore off McFarlane's crap in a hat years ago, but TDK is a favorite so I bit the bullet and got him.
I open , and just like those early McFarlane figures back in the 90's, he fell apart as I unpackaged him .
The upper chest literally fell off from the ab section .
This batman always do leg day,🤣
Those legs are ginenormous!
How could you compare this to the rebirth batman they released and say this is the best.
Answer of the day: I’m not fond of Frank Miller’s art style, I just happen to like his old, grumpy, « fat » Batman approach. The choice of making the Joker a David Bowie lookalike that hardly ever smiles was also interesting.
As for the figure, I think this was designed as a statue first, articulation being only secondary. It does look good in a threatening, hunched over pose. In fact the photo gallery is pretty convincing.
In a straight museum pose, I agree that it doesn’t work and the proportions are weird. But then again, the source material is pretty exaggerated and stylised, too.
Final note, I feel the horse BAF is lazy, it’s just Roach from their Netflix Witcher line with less paint. Not impressed.
Good lord he has weird proportions. I mean, the DKR comic had funky proportions, but they were unique and interesting. Mafex all day on this one
Lol just a horse ... beefy batman don't walk! So ready for Rival Collectable Reviews!
I was strongly considering this Batman. After watching your review then the reviews you’ve done for the mafex line I’m convinced to start collecting some mafex figure’s. I’d rather wait sand save up for a more expensive figure that is true to the source than fork out for what is essentially the worst interpretation of my second favourite Batman comic.
Thanks Anthony, big fan.
You won’t regret it they are brilliant figures.
Once again, the photoshop hits like a truck! 😆
The proportion alone is enough of a reason to get Mafex/mezco version.
