  • On August 19, 2023 I set out to see how far I could go on the Katy Trail on a Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0 with a range extender. I was able to go 141 miles between 4 am and 8:30 pm, at which time I broke my range extender cable and decided that it was time to throw in the towel.
I did this as a bike-a-thon format where I asked friends and family to pledge per mile for how far I could go in one day. I ended up raising more than $1,500 for MS! If you'd like to consider a donation, it's not too late:

    Thanks for watching!

Great job Dave! Nice work raising all that Milan for MS. Sounds like quite an adventure.

Just ordered a Creo 2 and it would be cool to add a column to your spreadsheet for public plug ins

Congrats on your ebike! Your idea is a good one, however I don't know there would be too many trailheads that I could mark as having a "public" plug in. Most of the trailheads that had a bathroom facility had no power at all. A few had exterior outlets that had a locked cover on it (Pilot Knob comes to mind), and one I remember had an outlet only inside the bathroom itself, meaning you'd have to park your bike in the bathroom the whole time! I charged in Hartsburg in a little park just off the trail (the gazebo had an outlet) and the Meriweather Cafe in Rocheport, which is awesome, were very friendly when I asked if I could charge there. Mokane had an outlet in the pavilion by the ball fields. Bottom line is charging isn't as easy to come by as you might hope. Most of the trail is fairly remote and most places just don't have exterior outlets free for the using.

I plan on doing a similar Bike MS fundraiser this summer and was wondering how you collected donations. Did they simply pledge verbally and then donate to your ride on the Bike MS website? Thanks

Yup, that's exactly what I did. No one reneged on their pledge and several rounded up, so it worked out pretty well. I had great results with this, much better than just asking lots of folks for a donation, which is what I had tried with little success for many years of doing charity rides/runs. Good luck with your fund raising!

What speed did you average? And what assist mode did you stay at ?

My moving average MPH was 13.1. I tried to stay in level 1 as long as I could, but I would go into level 2 as I got longer into the ride and was feeling like my legs were fading. Once I knew I was done, I put it in level 3 to make it to the town where I my wife was going to pick me up. www.strava.com/activities/9727610470
