  • A blending drill is helpful in SO many ways! It helps kids learn to read, provides practice with applying phonics skills, helps kids who are guessing at words, and so much more. A blending drill just requires a few letter cards, so it’s easy to set up. And the best part? It can be done in 5 minutes or less!
In this video, I'll show you exactly how to do a blending drill to improve your Kindergarten, first grade, or second grade students’ decoding abilities!

Your strategy is very good and is really helpful teaching CVC words.

I use your K-2 blending lines from TPT - would that be considered synonymous with this or are they focusing on different skills?

Hi! I actually use both. I like the cards because they are a nice visual to show one card = 1 sound. I do just a few quick minutes of the blending drill and students may read a blending line later in the lesson. I hope this helps!

I have started to use your blending boards with my intervention students. They can decode but we have noticed that their decoding is labored and their fluency is low.

This method, which many teachers do, requires kids to 'read' each word twice, - first practice saying the sounds in the word, them saying the word. I don't know where the blending is taught. I know kids who cannot learn blending this way.

One of the methods I talk about is blending two sounds of the word first, too! As you said, kids learn differently so it's important to present varying methods!
