John "Kanaka", in Polynesian languages, could be taken to mean "man". "Naka" in the lyric, translated into English, means "shell" or "sea creature"... perhaps "shellback" (a sailor) in the context of this song? Tu-lai-e (or Tulai e) means "get up" or "stand up" or possibly "stand up for yourself/stand your ground". So, the song lyric "John Kanaka naka, tulai e" might mean, "John, sailor man, stand your ground", perhaps???
