  • Did the Germans really create a stay-behind guerrilla force known as 'Werewolf' to continue the fight behind Allied lines in 1945? Yes, they did, but here you will discover the true story of an organisation that remains shrouded in myth and lies.

You know, when I was a kid not all that long ago, the History Channel used too be like this. Now it's about aliens, ghost hunting and conspiracies. Which is why, Mark, as a fellow lover of history, I'd like to thank you for the time and effort you put into researching and producing these videos that are entirely unbias, based purely on facts and real history!

The western Allies didn't do many things that you could name a war crime. But the things that the Soviets did were very barbaric.
I have family in both zones. My Bavarian grandmother complained about such things as that that the American soldiers always slept with their boots on in her family's "good feather beds" while they had 3 years before polish forced labourers on their farm (that where deported later on).
The things that the Soviets did where pretty fucked up and could definitely be called war crimes though (mass executions of people who might be a Nazi etc. - basically revenge for the crimes of German soldiers in Russia).
      Edit: Grammar

The suicides at Demmin in the Province of Pomerania (now in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern),...4:02 ...were either performed with guns, razor blades or poison, others hanged or drowned themselves in the Peene and Tollense rivers. Several mothers killed their children before killing themselves, or walked into one of the rivers with a rock in a backpack and their babies in their arms. Some families died by walking into the rivers, tied together. A local forester first shot three young children, then their mothers, then his wife and then himself, surviving as a blind man. In another recorded case, a daughter cut the wrists of her parents.
Further very sad details at Wikipedia: "Mass suicide in Demmin" esp. under section "Suicides." (with sources & citations in place).

My great grandfather served in the US 78th Infantry division and stayed in Germany after the war with OMGUS to help rebuild as he was an architect. He passed about 6 years ago now and I have come into possession of all of his service souvenirs, including post cards from and photos of him skiing at the SS resort camp Berghaus Bayerischzell, but one thing really sticks out to me from the hundreds things in the collection. In the very bottom I discovered a piece of paper, in German, bearing the Wolfsangel and saying that now the Wehrwolf had awoken and referencing Der Wehrwolf. Very interesting piece of history from the end of the war.

But the allies too, and not just the soviets but also the western allies. In Germany this topic ist until today a taboo. Nobody ist talking, writing or making TV-documentaries about it.

Someone's mother who grew up after the war (born in 48) I used to know talked to us about how people talked about "Der Werewolf" during the late 1940's all the way in to the 1960's. People thought there would be an uprising by secret units that were waiting after the end of the war to start up again, but it never happened. They might have had it in the plans, but I think after the war was really over and the country was divided in half they knew it was over.

  • @friarfox

Wehrwolf is a term I have not heard in decades. My ex wife's grandfather had been a U boat captain and her dad being too young at the time for standard military , along with other young teen age boys were chosen for a group called this . When her dad mentioned it at dinner one night, it sounded more like our eagle scouts rather than the nefarious sounding clip I just watched. I may be confusing terms here like Wolf pak for Wehrwolf but it would seem logical that by 1945 there would have been very few fighting age men left except for the teens. He died so even if we were still married I could not ask him. It's sad how we lose so much history from the side of the armies that lose wars without it being distorted. I myself had a great uncle on the ack ack guns in London who's hair turned white over night when a V2 rocked landed unexploded only yards from him.

Mark - another outstanding video. It explains something that my Dad (RIP) told me about his stint in the US Army in W. Germany. This paranoia existed for some time in the US Zone. Dad had to run mail. Though one Bavarian town he was a accompanied by M3 flak wagons; all residents had to keep shutters shut. This was 1951. He may have mentioned the town, but I cannot recall. When I see or hear about the Werewolves I think about what Dad said.

In the 1980s I worked with a German man who was a former Hitler Youth. He told me that his platoon hid in an attic when US forces arrived in their town. The eldest boy went down to surrender and was promptly put against a wall and shot. The remaining boys were terrified and decided to walk at night out to the Soviet zone approx 80km east of their town. The Soviets took their uniforms off and gave them civilian clothes, then sent them back to the US zone. A subsequent readjustment of the border then returned the town to Soviet occupation, leading my friend to escape and migrate to Australia. He said that the front line Soviet forces generally treated people well, but the following infantry armies were brutal. I guess this shows that war is really terrible, and that ordinary people can become desensitised to human suffering.

Could spend a tale on this topic. My grandfather was in HJ 1945 in Saxony. Hungry he went for a American tank to steal their chocolate by still wearing his uniform (lack of other clothing). The crew was outside, pissing XD. He made it home alive, sure they would have shot him on sight. Another day the Russians arrived. Forced everyone to burn any uniforms, flags an insignias etc. But they left after taking all the alcohol and some women. Luck this time.
His father was at the ghost division which Stalin wanted to kill every one of them (18km in front of Moscow). He went to Bavaria by foot after defending the south with Heeresgruppe Schörner. The Americans at that point were not able to take that much prisoners. So he went back to Frontline by foot, slip through Americans and Russians and arrived some days after grandfather burned his uniform and took the chocolate.
War ended peacefully for our little village.
But the allied troops were really nervous. Searching everywhere for resistance. Many spread out German soldiers where around in the woods. They fought bravely to the end, saving many German civilians as my grandfather told. Never forget, never forgive

I recall an account regarding the Werewolves when towards the end of the war a commander of a group of Hitler Youth anti-aircraft battery asked for volunteers to join him in forming a guerrilla band, those who didn't join would get a discharge. Only one came forth and then the commander said "Forget it I'm giving myself a discharge." This hints that no one really had any stomach for continuing the war even among the Hitler Youth. It was probably assumed - correctly or not - that the members of the Youth were completely indoctrinated into being suicidal killers dedicated to Nazi doctrine. They were probably as disillusioned as the other military detachments that had to do the fighting, but this is an assumption on my part. However, the fact few Werewolves continued on with the war hints that they were burned out from the war and just wanted it over.

You should do videos about U Boats who helped save allied sailors and merchant seamen. Giving them water, food, and towing their lifeboats toward shore. If you can't do the entire war, at least do the Laconia Incident. It has been kind of covered up, especially in America. The British don't come out spotless with what they did to the Italian prisoners as the boat was sinking, I could justify that, an Englishmen on a sinking ship might fear Italian POWs, but the Americans look especially bad with their involvement strafing and bombing the English lifeboats.

Mark, another very nice vid, thank you.
Here's a couple of things you might find interesting to look into.
-Some years ago I read a book (I read many, many books so I can't name it) wherein there was a two sentence reference to a high society group of British men (1940), who created an organization to continue resistance if there was s successful invasion of England. Recruitment was strictly on the old-boys network and the author related that he had gotten a whiff of it but couldn't find any more.
That such an organization was created isn't surprising but that it has remained secret to this day is remarkable.
-Another book, first hand account by an American infantryman, far south of the event, said that after the Malmedy massacre an order came down that no German prisoners were to be taken for the next thirty days. I would have dismissed this except the whole rest of the book was very credible.

Although, that can contributed to Japan already surrendered when the Allies landed and were ordered to do so by Hirohito who the Japanese people saw as a living god. Also, it should noted that there were many Japanese holdouts in the islands that were fought on such as the troops under Sakae Ōba and Hirō Onoda.

There's an image that sticks out in this video and that's the one of the two Hitler youth with their hands up beside the British soldier. It speaks volumes. Two kids, probably in the latter half of their teens. They look small and scared, but when standing beside the clearly much older British soldier, who has the weathered hard-bitten look of a career soldier, they look tiny. It's just the contrast that shows the desperation of the Germans late war. Makes me shudder slightly.

My uncle was the first to cross the Rhine river. I can’t recall his unit, but I know he was a ranger when he finally retired. My mother and her brothers were watching a movie in the theater, and in those days they would show short clips from the ongoing war. They saw their brother on the big screen! For years I have tried to find that footage, and have failed! The news reel showed him and other soldiers near the river they crossed. They fought one hell of a battle to make it across! If the author of this video happens to know a good place to find that clip, I would be thrilled to hear on it. Thank you and Semper Fi

Wasnt long before they were being shot at the shooter was in the church steeple fireing down at them ! Men were getting hit ! It was only when a troop with a bazooka fired a couple of times at the steeple - blowing apart the steeple and in the falling debris was a body ? -And it wss then they found out this werewolf was a female - Still fighting for the Reich ?

Because my parents were military starting with the Second World War and my grandparents were VETERANS of the first world war, my grandparents adopted a few children who were in the German Werewolves at the request of the United States Government. Now members of my family are descendants of The German Reich. The most amazing thing about all of this is that my family is Black. And of course you know that the German propaganda was for a Nation an Aryan Race.
In 1961 we discovered that they had surviving families in Germany and we had one awkward family reunion with them. We still maintain contact with them and see them often.
The most strangest thing about this is that since they are my Grandparents "children," they are my uncles and aunts. Which means that they are my parents BROTHERS and SISTERS.
But they don't see color. We are family.

I knew about the Werewolf units. They were supposed to have been issued with a belt buckle which looked like a standard issue buckle but had four short pistol barrels behind it inside each with a round. The idea was that when they were captured the Werewolf soldier would place his hands on his belt as if surrendering. Then when the Allied soldier was close enough the Werewolf pressed a button on the buckle and the front of the buckle dropped down on a hinge and fired all four shots.
Not sure if it was ever used but it was possibly as dangerous to the Werewolf as it was to the Allied soldier. And if it failed the Germans would have been shot out of hand. And once news got around then the slightest resistance would have resulted in more Germans dead.
