    Thanks for the video, everything looks simple and practical. The only thing I've seen differently is most manufacturers recommend not touching the quartz sleeve with bare hands as the oil can impede the UV rays, just an FYI. If you're only handling the ends, probably won't make a big difference.

    Great video! However, one crucial thing that I did wrong isn't clearly shown: Make sure to also put back the top o-ring when you've re-inserted the glass sleeve, or else it leaks like mad.

      Plus it reminded me to move the body of my unit lower, I don't quite have enough room to lift the lamp out because of the way the installer originally mounted it. Figures they didn't think of that when they mounted it haha

    I never knew they had a UV filter for homes. I Helped build a few little landscape ponds when I took a few classes for it. We put UV filters on the ponds to kill Algae and Bacteria. Guess It is for the same thing in homes?

    • @AlmostHomestead
      @AlmostHomestead  Před 5 lety +3

      My Slice Of Heaven Outdoors I found about them when talking to a neighbor who had installed a few in places up here. The description for the filter says that it removes waterborne contaminants including bacteria and microorganisms. The one we bought was pricey but we haven’t had any issues with getting sick or anything so that’s good.

      Hey thanks. The extra filter was gifted to me. I will be switching to a Big Blue Water Filter with a prefiltero to catch any bigger stuff. The little white filter clogs up with sentiment quicker than I'd like. I will still go through the UV filter after the big blue. The big blue is supposed to last a lot longer. Several companies sell them. Just check on Google. Hope that helped.

    hey almost homestead, i know it's been a couple years since you posted this video but just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to film it. man i gotta tell ya, sometimes i cringe at all the new tech (twitter etc.) but boy could i have used google & youtube when i was a kid:))) i watched a couple other videos on this as well...i like to watch a few in case there's any new pointers. i was so freaked out about that quartz sleeve cuz another guy said it's smart to have an extra one on hand because if you break it, you're pretty much without water til you get another one (i guess unless you're setup for a bypass). for some reason i also thought you weren't supposed to touch the tube. you shoulda seen me, i've got gloves, paper towels, 2 bathtubs, 2 pitchers, 2 buckets full of water. wiped down outside of tube with vinegar, i had a couple corks laying around so i filled entire tube with white vinegar, corked em & put it one of the bathtubs. let it soak for an hour, then moved tube to the other bathtub (you know, fresher water:))). my utility room is a nightmare, absolutely packed, unit is mounted high behind other softeners & such so i'm teetered on a sketchy step stool ladder job just knowing, KNowing that i'm gonna break that tube. anyway blah blah blah, guess this is what happens when you're self diagnosed with OCD. good news is that hey, i didn't break the tube, got it crystal clear with my cleaning, got the bulb in without touching or breaking, no leaks! 5 minutes after success i got on amazon & ordered 2 bulbs & an extra quartz tube...so you know what that means, next year i'm gonna get cocky, rush thru the job, break the tube AND the bulb...and not care one little bit:)))
    sorry for the novel, i guess i just wanted to say that every time someone like you takes the time to do something like this to help us, it's amazing to think about all the stories that you'll never hear that were directly related to you changing your UV bulb on film:))) thanks again man, i am now going to watch some more of you vids.

    • @AlmostHomestead
      @AlmostHomestead  Před 3 lety

      Haha! I love it. Thanks for sharing your story. I'm glad that it worked out. I have an extra sleeve but only because I ordered it on accident thinking that I ordered a bulb. I suppose it's good to have an extra though. This last time I changed the bulb I broke the ceramic piece on one end that holds the connector pins to the bulb connector. I ended up fixing it with Bondic UV glue. I couldn't believe that I fixed it. Anyway, thank you for sharing. It's always good to know that the video helped someone. I know I appreciate when I find a helpful video. CZcams is amazing for quick help and answers. Take care!

      @@AlmostHomestead wow, thanks for the reply Almost, yeah i'm kinda glad you've got that tube just in case. for me personally it's not so much the cost of the stuff, it's just i live in the middle of nowhere, and it's not like you can just find these at the store, so if & when i break something i like to have backup. i put this off for weeks & now that i'm done...i kinda wanna do it again:) i think i hear saws in the background of your video, music to my ears!

      hey Almost, sorry for another question, i hope you get notified, i'll keep it quick instead of my novels. after i got done with bulb & quartz tube i noticed a label that i guess i didn't read really close the first time. my dad did the service last year & he put a label that said "replaced bulb & cleaned sight glass on ( a date)", he's outa range in alaska right now so i can't ask him. what i don't know is if he just called the quartz tube a 'sight glass' or if there indeed is a sight glass maybe in one of those sensors that plugs into the bulb cylinder unit. i know you're not a mind reader but is there anything like that that you know of?
      ps - wow, guess i can't keep it short & simple...another novel:)))

      Stoney Creek Heritage Farm Yes, they are good for one year of continual use... “Due to the nature of UV lamps, over time, the production of germicidal UV-C drops off and it becomes less effective at deactivating organisms in the water”. Thanks for checking out the video.

    • @OakKnobFarm
      @OakKnobFarm Před 5 lety +1

      39 watts isn't too bad - same as a small incandescent bulb. 39/1000th of a kilowatt x 24 hrs = .936 kw/H per day if it's running continuously. We pay about $.15 a kwH here, so about $52 a year roughly.
