- How to draw horses? As a creature and animal artist, this is a common question I'm asked. In this video, I've broken down the top 10 tips when drawing horses. Enjoy! I hope it'll be helpful.
My name is Bobby Chiu. I'm an artist in the movie industry and I hope to be a positive influence for the industry. If you find my videos helpful, share them and hashtag it #schoolismtips. If I find it, I'll retweet/repost it! For more art education, check out www.schoolism.com. It's professional art education for the masses.
I like how this is more than just, "Insert this specific curve for this part of the horse" but also covers tips that can help to draw other things as well.
Me: I fear no man..
Legs of horses when I’m drawing: *exists*
Me: But that thing...
Me: *It scares me.*

Do you hear that low roar in the distance...? That's the sound of thousands of artists singing your praises for breaking down horse anatomy! I own multiple books on animal skeletal and muscular structure, but your explanation made all that technical information click. Thank you so much for this!!
Would you be open or available to making a similar video on deer anatomy? Or do you have any good videos to suggest?
Aaaannddd just saw your recommendation for Creature Anatomy. Good stuff! :D
it's an amazing course. tough but you'll finish it completely transformed.
What is glazing medium
i think , the legs are to short ..... ssry
Actually, those lumps on the back of the horses leg is called a hock, and the shoulders aren’t called “Shoulders” they are called withers the spine comes of a horses neck say the long neck and then you have just a straight line from the neck, horses are simple if you know the anatomy it is WAAAAAAY easier for you if you can work out Human or animal anatomy to learn how it works.
It’s just a fact from yours truly the horse girl who is psycho, XD have a great day
Are you a horse girl, or are u an equestrian? (Those two are very different from each other XD)

the hoof always gets me
There is a page for natural hoofcare that has excellent images and explanations on the anatomy of the hoof, it's for natural barefoot farrierwork for healthy natural hooves but it was extremely helpful for me on understanding the hoof structure! They do have a few images of hooves from wild mustangs and a few are cadaver hooves so be prepared that some images are a little graphic at first. But really, it is very informative and educational! thenaturalhoof.co.uk
thanks :D
...hah ..hah... very funny heh.
Yes me too . I never get it right
Yes me too
I can see why he addressed the legs the way he did. To show how they work, for better understanding of how to make sense in drawing a horse....however...horses knees are only in the front legs. The hind legs have the stifle, and hock. Same as a dog too. I liked how he broke down a bit of anatomy....sometimes you need to know what's under everything for it to all come together. Nicely done.
Great mini-course on Horse Anatomy! Thanks, Bobby.
Awesome and simple breakdown Bobby. I love a faster and quicker approach to anatomy so this was so helpful to me.
This is actually so helpful.. i always try to sketch with lines to dictate where my anatomy goes, but your whole sketch language section blew my mind. I also am way too overly critical of my initial sketches, so it helps to know my beginning "loose sketch" does NOT have to be perfect, just a base for a further sketch.
You explained everything about art in the video... Moments
Awesome descriptions of ways to use line weight. Thanks!
Very helpful. Thanks so much! The skeletal structure portion was particularly helpful to me. You are very talented!
Thank you!
Thank you for this great tutorial! As a novice artist and a horse lover, I have always been familiar with the anatomy of horses, I just never understood how to implement it in drawings!!
So glad this was helpful!! Thanks for watching!😊

this is the best video in horse drawing, hands down. Simple and effective, and can be applied to other subjects as well

people don't actually think the ankle part is the knee, do they??? please tell me they dont
They do, really. I had to explain to my hubby where our dog's elbows and knees are. XD
are you always this condescending?
Actually the joints Bobby is referring to as ankles in a horses leg at rear is called hocks & in the front is their knees.....so actually yes people will think they are knees in the front if they are horse people because they are. It’s just when breaking it down to draw it’s easier to explain in this manner. The fetlocks are the ankles of horses attached to hoofs... they flex & control weight distribution in the same manner as our ankles.
@@LionArtStudio I know it in horseman's terms, but I was thinking that for an non-horsy artist, the horseman's lingo is confusing. Hocks, stifles, pasterns, croup, etc. Not a bad idea to look up a Pony Club diagram of horse anatomy, and compare it to this. Another thing is that drawing from photographs can be treacherous, because you often get the wrong part of a movement in a photo, so one has to leave off the photo and use your instinct, or it can look stilted.
Susan Manderson yeah, I was answering the poster of this comment... Very condescending....
You are an excellent teacher. Thank you!
Awesome tutorial. Thank you so much Bobby
Thank you for this lesson. I love your work
Great information, and thanks for explaining the horse's legs... and how they relate to human anatomy.
Great to hear that tip was helpful for you, Jan! Thanks for watching😊

Great - no doubts! But it sounds like: let's call it a day because drawing human limbs is easy! ;)
Thank you for this video. Very useful!

Wonderful!
i just love this video so much, it helped me a lot
and ahh finaly someone tells the important thing for drawing: someone need to understand how it works to draw it.
i see so many tutorials where people just go by 'yeah draw it so and like that and its done hah' but learning the anatomy and things help so much more sonce you then not only can draw one style but every artstyle you can come up with ! ( whats amazing if you are a person that likes to use stylized characters in drawings)
and i just can say again this helped me SO much before my horses had look like sausages with laggies but now there actually look like horses ahhh ♥
Haha thanks for your comment +Das Fischi!! Great to hear that the video helped you! It's true, understanding what you're drawing gives you accuracy and freedom too! Best of luck with your horses! ~ Richelle
Thanks! Very useful info
Fantastic tutorial.
Very useful. Thank you.
Bravo.wonderful thanks
Thanks! Horses have been driving me crazy for ages. Only today did I realize that the hoof is more of a triangle than I thought. I would love to see a great human anatomy class on Schoolism. I think I know anatomy, but then as I try to draw, I'm missing things and I do not know what I'm missing. (If that makes sense?)
Bobby you are awesome. Thank you.
Thank you +Pixel Senpai! You're awesome! :D ~ R

I mean this in the nicest way but the back “knee” is called a hock it might sound confusing but the “elbow” is actually the knee
Thank you. This tutorial was very helpful.
This helped me a lot thank you!
Really good tute, but one problem the horses ears are backwards, not hearing backwards, fed up backward
😮
