Jesse's ability to deduce so much about the theme and purpose of not only songs but the games they're from speaks volumes about both his experience as a musician and the incredible talent of the composers.
I'm not suprised so many people want you to play X. I'm one of them. It was the first game I ever played, and its ethereal vibe and powerful story havent really been matched for me since

FFX received a remaster in 2013 with a re-arranged soundtrack (the original soundtrack remained an option), but, the 3rd one is indeed a fan remix, and not the official re-arrangement.

I'm not surprised to hear that this is one of your most requested games to play-- it's my all time favorite game! Incredible story and cast, and I'm a huge fan of the music. 'Solemn' is definitely fitting. There are a lot of really fun and goofy moments as well, but the sad ones really hit. Thanks for the insightful reaction! It's always such a treat to hear about your perspective on these tracks. :')

The thing about Someday The Dream Will End, other than it just being a great song, is that the last hour or so leading up to it (and really, you could go further back and start at the big scene after reuniting with Yuna) has probably the most effective series of emotional gut punches I've seen in a game. Spoilers:
You learn that Tidus is essentially a summon, and that he will disappear if you succeed in doing what you're trying to do. In other words, the best case scenario is that TIdus basically takes Yuna's place as a sacrifice, and no matter what happens there's no possible way they can be together after this. The fact that he continues on without pause demonstrates the extend of the character development he's gone through.
Then you get Auron's speech at the summit, reminiscing about what happend when he first walked this path, all while the endlessly melancholic Wandering Flame plays. "Legendary guardien? I was just a boy. A boy about your age, actually. I wanted to change the world too, but I changed nothing. That is _my_ story..."
Then Rikku makes her last desperate attempt to stop Yuna, to no avail.
Then you listen to Yuna's recording of her final words to her friends, recorded way back during happier times, when Tidus / the player had no idea what was going to happen. Going through and thanking all her friends one by one, talking about her memories of them and what they meant to her, under the assumption that they would only hear it after her death.
And then finally you descend into the ruins of Zanarkand, and reach the solemn camp scene that you'll have seen a hundred times as the intro whenever the game starts, except now it's been completely recontextualized.
And that's when this song kicks in, serving as BGM for the final trip through the ruins, and continuing to play even through encounters. You know you need to keep walking, but you also know you're walking towards a funeral, and the best case is that it'll be yours.

FF X's world of Spira is one of the best-designed worlds in a RPG. It feels alive and real, rather then just a stapling-together of different themed zones. The music helped reflect that, being rich and deep. The theme of the game, for the most part, is solemn. Spira during FF X is a world that has all but given up hope. It's *very* hard to say anything about "Someday the Dream Will End" without spoiling it. Best I can say is it plays during a serious revelation in the game, and the song's title actually works on two levels, only one of which is obvious at the time. If you liked NieR: Automata (and I know you did, I watched ya), then I think you'll love FF X. It remains my favorite in the series of single-player FF games, even above VII.

There are upbeat, happy, and fun songs too, so i hope you get a few of those requests to round out the experience. FFX is has a lot of dark, somber, whathaveyou moments, to be sure, but they sprinkle in just the right amount of comedy and levity to make the experience a joy from start to finish.

Someday The Dream Will End is my favorite theme from FFX. And yes memories do come flooding back with most FF music honestly. Servants of the Mountain is from a zone you spend a fair amount of time in toward the end of the main story. There is a tribe of people living there, and lots of things happen in this zone in quick succession. Also the instrument you were thinking of played with little hammers(mallets) is probably a Vibraphone(we had one for Jazz band in High School and it has a great sound to it it's kinda like a Wurlitzer rotary speaker sound)

Servants of the Mountain will always hold a special place in my heart cause it used bagpipes so gorgeously at 12:24, it's so rare to see the instrument implemented into music outside of Scottish pieces of music but Servants of the Mountain and some songs from FF14 just use them so well. Additionally in the remastered version they're just muted out by everything else and my heart breaks.

It has that feeling of the crushing weight of an ocean of sadness bearing down on you (enhanced by the sonar pings) while you have to march on. I think like many songs the remaster didn't do this justice (mainly because they royally ruined the sonar pings). Glad you listened to the original.

Someday the Dream Will End gets the honor of being played uninterrupted in and out of combat in a particular section, which as usual means they felt it was important to keep the same vibe. Servants of the Mountain plays on, surprise, a mountain, but a mountain full of graves of past would-be-heroes, giving more gravitas to the journey. It's one of my favs, though I'm not always in the mood for it. There are definitely upbeat themes though!

  • @Boyzby
    @Boyzby Před 6 měsíci +1

Barring maybe a couple of tracks and how some songs are very similar, I definitely prefer the original soundtrack to the remastered one-which I believe you can choose on the PC and PS5 versions. Immediately coming to mind are Mi'hen Highroad where they replace the twangy, springy note with a regular guitar, the Thunder Plains where they take out the metronome sound and make it... different, and Via Purifico where they take a dungeon and make it sound like a piano recital. People will probably go "Why would anyone like the original, when these sound way better?" (with Via Purifico in particular), but they forget these aren't songs on an album, they have context and a reason to sound that way. It also just gives personality to the songs.
I wasn't expecting to type this much, but a game's OST is very important-especially for such a classic. I hope you play it (and thank you for saying 10 and not X). It's a pretty well thought out story and world, and I love all the characters. And after you finish the game, you can listen to the abomination/hilarity that is Tidus Fantasy X. :D

  • @yohanthefate7331

FFX is a game that explores religion and belief. How institutions weaponize religion. How faith is used to justify tragedy and the cycle of sacrificing our future in favor of a escaping our sins. It's a game about spiritual enlightenment. These songs are a challenge of what it means to have faith.
Someday The Dream Will End is, as the title implies, about the ending of a dream. But in particular the dreams of the dead. Dreams are always understand to be a small version of death. So dreams connect us to the dead. This song is allowing the dead to pass but to remember that they lived. A song of hope that they may finally reset. As you described it its a mood. It's a song that makes you sad but you can resonate with. As its not about tragedy but just letting go. Both so you can live and so you can die. The epitome of what it means to be spiritual. Life is like a beautiful dream your living now. And someday The Dream Will End. This is why the games music has that night time feel. Night is when you are closest to death
Servants of The Mountain in contrast is the theme of the village of one of the most loyal member of your party. This one is more spoilery so Ill just keep it tame. But simply put its that theme of faith put through the lens of this party members past. This is a tribal song. It is a mountain village lol. a village of intense faith. and so its a challenge of what faith is. what strength is. Its the ultimate challenge of faith. To walk the path of your beliefs but to not be afraid to challenge it when it is necessary. For its meaning has to evolve like we do. What it truly means to be a believer in religion. To change but to also remain strong. not to stagnate. Hence the shift to conflict.

You asked for a vague explanation of X, & I won't give anything away, but the trouble is there's so much I want to gush about that I just can't. The game is big on you think it's one thing, then it turns out to be something else, but it never gets too confusing, like could sometimes happen witb FF7, as much as I love it. On the surface, it's a fairly simple if well-written story, but I think the most interesting stuff is in the background subtext. Not to say the basic plot isn't interesting. The characters are all rock solid, and it's a satisfying journey, if not always a happy one.

Oh, both these songs are just great. "Servants of the Mountains" have that very tribal vibe, I love that. If you want to hear something different from this game, I really recomment "Blitz Off" and "Brass de Chocobo" (this one is of course chocobo theme), some more energetic and happy sounding songs. Also recomment "Auron's Theme" and "Jecht's Theme", something really different. But about beautiful music from this game, I really recommend "Sending to Another Dimension" (or just "The Sending"), this one is with vocals, also have some tribal sound, but it's connected to religious part of this game, there is main religion in this game which is big part of story. If you listen to "The Sending" you will be able to understand long acords from "The Contest of the Aeons", because it's the same melody, it's in many track from this game connected with aeons (summons) and religious part of story. And this song playing on one of the most beautiful cutscenes in this game, more, ome of the most beautiful cutscenes I've ever saw in video game, and it's from 2001. That cutscene is so beautiful, but for story it's so sad and even terrifying, very powerful cutscene... There is newer version of FFX (and also FFX-2) with new graphics ect (which are terrible in my opinion, especially characters' faces, I reallu don't know what went wrong...), but cutscenes are the same like in original version, what is great, because are just so beautiful.

Without spoiling anything... 10 is very much a story all about the journey and not the destination. The Destination is worth it because the journey there is amazing.
I don think I can tell you what Someday The Dream Will End is about. You need to make that discovery yourself. Servants of the Mountain is a theme for the Ronso people. One of your party members, Khimari (Voiced by John DiMaggio, who also voices Wakka, but you would recognize him as Bender from Futurama or Heideger in FF7 Remake) is a Ronso.
Also, fun fact, Tom Kenny also voices a character you meet several times throughout 10. Though you would NEVER recognize him unless you already know because his range of talent is spectacular. I'll leave you to guess should you ever play FF10 who he is in FF10, but Tom Kenny is most famous for Spongebob Squarepants. Did I ever mention I'm a huge fan of voice actors and I am pretty good at identifying people?

    • @nottheoneyourelookingfor0504

I’d have to say that FFX is purely about the journey. There is no destination. The spiral is never ending.
Lies are nothing but the truth that is hidden.
Seymour is one who never hid the truth.
      When he summons,
      “Feel my pain, Come Anima!”
He’s not bullshitting. Recall his reaction in Zanarkand. “Mother no!”
Also Jecht was a truthful character. There was no pretense. His skill at blitz afforded him ego, which enraged Tidus. He doted on his wife, which also enraged Tidus.
Jecht really wanted the best for his son… but he just ‘didn’t know how to express it’.
The resignation in his voice when he responds “I know, I know” to Tidus’s “I hate you, Dad”… there’s no bluster. No passing the blame. Jecht did what he could for Tidis, and knew it wasn’t enough.
Even Jyscal admits his mistake in taking a human wife and having a half breed child, for political/religious reasons.
Belgemine doesn’t help you to get stronger, she enables more pain and suffering.

That sound you couldn't identify in Someday the Dream Will End is a percussion instrument. Based on the quality of it, it's probably a hollow wood being struck by a wooden stick. Unfortunately I don't know the name of it as these types of percussion instruments don't get as much publicity as popular orchestra choices such as the snare or timpani.

Colgera (18 minutes version) and demon king’s army are both worthwhile to listen to on loop, some of the greatest songs in any video game ever

Solemn energy is right. FFX's plot is a pilgrimage. The journey has been long, full and ups and downs. Finally the goal you've all been travelling to for 25+ hours is in sight. You know what waits for you there, and you are not at ease. Now it's time to walk the rest of the way and face it. Someday The Dream Will End kicks in. It keeps going, through battles, through everything, until you get there. You want a track that brings back some feels, you got it.

The static/screams can be put into context if you realize you're walking through a field of the restless souls of an exterminated people. Knife to the heart every time.

What you described as static/screams in Someday the Dream Will End always sounded to me like a percussion instrument like someone was loudly hitting a hollow object.

Someday the dream will end is one of my favorite tracks, period. They do something with it that really makes the moment stand out from the rest of the game.
I've always thought of the "screams" more as something like a sonar going off, maybe it's the rythm of it, but honnestly both options work imo?

An upbeat one would be "Blitz Off", the FFX original one not the remaster would be best. Found myself going back to it a lot more than others. Brief description would be, aquatic action.

It's been years since I heard FFX OST but at the first few notes I remembered immediately. The game is an amazing experience and the sequel, X-2, shaped a good chunk of my gaming preferences.
I hope you get to play the game at some point, I really recommend it

FFX is truly an "other world" (lol) where you're thrown into it as real fish out of water. I doubt you could be spoiled without reading an essay because there is so much context to everything it's wild. It wasn't my first or the one I've replayed the most, but it is my favorite FF.

The thing about FFX is that actually the majority of the game is fun and upbeat. There's certainly a lot of dower moments and it's ultimately a very sombre story, but most of the moment to moment interactions are comical or silly or upbeat. Similar in tone to the original FF7 in thay way

I manage to play FFX last year as a recommendation first story-wise before I can play FFX2 proper. And I am glad I did.
The soundtrack is definitely memorable. Especially the Mt. Gagazet theme(Servants Of The Mountain), my personal favorite. I can see why everyone praises FFX alot besides it's gameplay.

FF X is a game where the lead character Tidus, a young, spoiled, arrogant Blitzball player finds himself in a world he doesn't recognize. In trying to find a way back home (To Zanarkand) he joins a pilgrimage of additional characters that are trying to recover a power that will allow them to stop a creature that is laying waste to the world.

FFX is another OST I adore. I'm a sucker for somber, melancholy, yet beautiful music. Servants of the Mountain gives me chills every time I hear it, so haunting and somber, it really pulls on your heart strings. EDIT: I really don't like the remaster OST. Something about it completely guts all the aspects of the original I love. I think it's because they remove the layers, which looses so much color and flavor in the original.

When I played this game first time on PS2, years ago, "Someday the Dream Will End" was my fav track... until I grew up and "Wandering Flame" took over ... If you ever play it and buy the Remaster Version, I highly suggest that you start with the Original OST, the Arranged one changes the vibe of the game too much, imo.
