    The era of the FMV is something the young gamers of today just wouldn't understand. It totally felt like a reward and they just felt special. Kinda the same special feeling you get when you get a notification from one of your favorite CZcams channels talking about FMVs for an hour!

    Technically, PS1 FMVs are what got me into FF and JRPGs. Anyone who was around for the launch of FF7 probably remembers that the (American) TV commercials only showed the FMV sequences. So lets say I had unrealistic expectations what the whole game would look like. But I got the game for Christmas 1997 and enjoyed it all the same, even after the whiplash of seeing what the actual in-game models look like.

    I wasn’t really alive during an era fmvs were common (grew up on the wii and Xbox 360) but I’ve gotten really into old games the past couple years, and getting to see the fmv cutscenes is always my favorite part! Sure, FFVII and SA2’s graphics (as an example) didn’t age the best, but they’re so charming that I’m nostalgic for an era I never experienced. Especially when a part of a game is challenging, getting to see fmv cutscenes after is an amazing reward!

    Very pleasent to watch video. I love this old prerendered aesthetic in FMVs from late 90s-early 2000s games. This cutscenes are so unique for this era and i couldn'e agree more that they were often kind of sweet reward for completion section of game and additional encouragement to go forward. For me they are still very charmful often more then many modern in-engine cutscenes.

    It's mind boggling that each disk of the PS1 Era were 500MB a piece. Half of that space had to go towards the FMV's.
    Fun fact of the day; the song for the cutscene for the FF8 demo that came with Brave Fencer Musashi never made it into the actual game.

The FMVs transformed the games into huge productions. It took the game to the next level in immersion and scale. So many times as a kid my mind was blown. Bonus points went to PS1 for being smart enough to release free demo dics. Squaresoft did this often. My copy of Brave Fencer Mushashi and a few of my other games came with a demo disc because they were in the cases made for multiple dics, so if it was a 2 or 3 disc game, it would have available spots for more, so they would toss in a 3 to 5 game demo for free. This got us to try games that we may not have tried otherwise. It was actually a good strategy.

    • @GamingBroductions
      @GamingBroductions  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Those were definitely a great idea on their own, Square did an awesome job in general in marketing their other games to their existing fanbase. On the back of every instruction manual to one of their games would be short little previews of their other games out at the time, made it kind of feel like this big connected but not actually connected world of games

    That was such a wonderful trip down memory lane.
    I'll forever be a firm believer that limitation breeds creativity. With the graphics back then FMV's were an amazing tool to deliver a detailed scene filled with emotions and vibe. Creating a dance scene like in FF8 in engine just wouldn't have worked as it does in the FMV.
    Nowadays the graphics are so modern and "pretty" that most people don't see a reason to use anything else outside of the engine. No beautiful cinematography as we got with FMV's.
    Thanks for the video!

    I'll never forget the opening to FF7. I don't know if anything has come as close to blowing my mind going from the SNES to that was actually insane. Opening movie for tales of destiny was another one I watched again and again. And more games needed a item to rewatch cutscenes like Lunar SSSC did. I would have rewatched so many of the final fantasy cutscenes.

    • @GamingBroductions

    Great video as always. That remix of Radical Dreamers at the end gave me chills. You definitely captured a lot of my thoughts. FMV cutscenes used to feel like a reward for progress in a game and I think I still feel a lingering attachment to that experience. But then I find myself getting annoyed in modern games when control is taken from me and now watching this I realize why. It doesn’t feel like a reward so much anymore when there’s so little distinction between cutscene and in-game graphics.
