Palo Alto PD is also very adept at community policing! From going on a ride along and living in the community before and my training, I was impressed with the community policing approach generally. I think that a coffee shop, Starbucks or otherwise, was selected in this case only because the clientele are likely to be sober (unlike a bar), open to conversation, and generally a visible place that all passers by can enter free of charge. Coffee shops and community centres have gradually replaced pubs as venues for community outreach and engagement, but if a similar approach was taken in centuries past - and yes I’m aware that pubs (originally known as public houses) predate modern policing by a long shot - would have instead taken place in a pub. All in all, being approachable and holding yourself accountable to the community you serve is a sound method for safeguarding and raising up a society.
