Great work dude! Nice fix! satisfying to watch, happy it worked out.
Great Video Lee. Probably a combination of music and visuals but mildly relaxing. I appreciated your methodical disassembly and reassembly and your taking of notes, not to mention your video backup of the process that you could rewatch if necessary. Great job👏
Yeah I had to write down where every screw came from so I didn’t forgot lol. Thanks for watching
You have earned my subscription! Great video and really an amazing repair! Respect!
Awesome job Lee! Proud of you 😄👍
very cool my dude! sometimes some shops like to lose money thinking a consumer doesn't have knowledge on a product they bring in for repair. glad you were able to fix it your self and save your self practically the price of a new lens. I got a 3 years repair or replacement warranty for both my A7IV and the 24-70mm G Master Lens to avoid this but I like what you did on the repair.
My Nikon Z 24-70 f2.8 S developed a hairline crack in the extending tube. I handed it in to Nikon service here in Sweden, they took two weeks to decide that they would not take it under warranty and gave me a quote of around 600 US dollars! Being held hostage , I had to agree the repair but I made it under the condition that everything that they are replacing must be returned with the lens, from the smallest screw to any seals etc! The lens was not dropped , worked perfectly, so I don’t understand that a thin plastic tube part can cost so much even considering the time to fix it! I wish I could have sourced the part and fixed it myself as you did! Nearly a month on and still waiting, I shall never buy an extending lens again! Lesson learned! 👍🏾🙏🏾 🏴🇸🇪🇹🇹
Great job! I don't know many people who can work on something so delicate without making it worse lol. I've dabbled in lens repair a tiny bit and it's quite hard. And this was a vintage lens that does not have the fancy electronics dangles of new lenses. Awesome job saving a boatload of money over a single broken plastic stud!
God bless you, I had almost an identical incident to you with my FX3 slipping out of an unsecured tripod. Exact same break as you, lens mount popped off and a couple of the plastic posts broke. I have ordered all of the replacement parts and plan on fixing this baby!
Hi, thanks for the great video, could you share the place you bought your tools for this?
Thanks for this! Gave me the confidence I needed to replace the bayonet mount on my 200-600 G.
I'm fairly certain these repair centers will price themselves out of doing a simple repair that shouldn't be more than a few hundred dollars. I had the same issue with Fuji, sent a camera body for repair due to very slight water damage and their repair quote mentioned nothing about water damage and quoted me basically the price of buying a used body. Fixed it myself a year ago, camera is working flawlessly! Great job repairing your own gear!
Some times you just have to take matters into your own hands. Especially when it’s not a warranty thing
A real Pro! Congratulations 🤗
I tried to find in the parts website the Focus and Zoom rubber rings without success. Could you please help me with the direct link Lee? 😊🙏
Great work, Lee.
I did the same thing with mine on the tripod it jus fell off but my lens stayed on but there was a slight separation on it but not enough to affect the lens abilities, any suggestions?
I happened same defects, what is the name of that accessory and how can I find it online? Thanks!
I have a very similar looking break with the same lens could you please list the parts you ordered? I don't know what part number that barrel is.
I love this! So cool that people repair their stuff. Thank you for sharing!
Man you made this look easy! How are you re connecting the ribbon cable?
Just dropped my same lens and have the same broken back mount. After I watched your video, I ordered the barrel and the back mount piece as well(Warped). But my question to you sir, what is the white grease that you used to grease the part? TIA
Where did you source the parts? I’m having a focus issue (no AF or MF, with F- error) on my 16-35 GM and I think the issue may be a simple fix by replacing the board
Thanks for making this! My lens is back to new ✅✅✅
I have the same repair !!! Your a legend for this video !!!
Love this!! Do you have a link to get parts?
does the barrel come with extra screws?
Well done!!
Where did you purchase these spare parts from?
cant breath, looks so scary, great work
This is incredible. Mine broke the exact same way while abroad in Costa Rica. Opening a precision lens was feeling mad intimidating, but your vid makes me realize it's no more complex than replacing an iPhone screen, which I've been doing since college. I'm gonna go for it.
One question.. what grease did you use to lube the spinny bits?
I will bet that opening a lens is even easier, than opening a modern phone, due to the lack of glue.
Enjoyed it :)
Well done M8!
For the zoom ring you apply 3M 300lse adhesive. What was the white think applied after?
That was the original tape / plastic on the lens before. But the adhesive on it was kind of weak after I removed it. Since I didn’t have that as new I just added double sided tape to hold it down
The Sony membership was gold advice.
I have the same lens and mine will not AF anymore. When I try to change it in the camera body from MF to AF, it reads “MF, Lens is not supported”. Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Mad skills Man! I like taking things apart and putting them back together but this isn't something I would have attempted...how did you remember all the steps without missing anything? I hate people who try to take advantage...so NOT cool.
Just performed this repair and its a lot easier than it seems. Just gotta be patient.
Thanks for the video bro, I had to fix my fx3 handle myself! You got mad patients bro!
How meta is it if I’m repairing my own lens while this video is on in the background?
Nice use of that guitar pick! Watching this video reminded me of my first career as an electronics technician, troubleshooting and fixing pc boards down to component level. Sometimes I miss that job. There was a lot of satisfaction in diagnosing and fixing problems. Loved this video!!!
Ford quoted $1600 to replace the dash cluster on my '06 Mustang because of some stupid connection. I bought one on ebay for $130 and took an hour and a half to replace. DYI is fun.
You’re a brave man! Entirely worth it over the $2200 repair
I have insurance on all my stuff but it’s a $1000 deductible. I would use it if I really really had to. Like if my a7siii was damaged
You're a mad man. My brain isn't made for this haha. Great work, Lee!
I ran over my camera bag with my car by mistake. Drove over my 85mm 1.8Fe. It still works just fine but the focus ring is alot stiffer, so it must be bent a little lol
@@LeeZavitz yeah, my heart sank. The bag had my 28mm f2, my 55m zeiss and the 85mm in lol. Luckily all seem to be ok apart from the 85mm. It's the tallest lens so I reckon it protected the others. I was shooting the car when I left the back near it.
Great skills! Looks like you‘ve done it before😉
I’ve modded and fixed a lot of lenses in the past. Just not a Sony g master
Wow!! CZcams has infinite numbers of ads. All of video I clicked it has literally 2 advertisements.
“Blinker fluid...”🤣...good one! Yep, been there. Great video, fortunately, I have a long-term (25+ years ) relationship with my local camera store/repair shop (yes, they still exist👍), and are an authorized repair shop for most of the major brands, including Fuji which is my system and to date, none of my gear needed to be shipped out to the manufacturer's US headquarters (most are in NJ). Wish I could say the same for my cars.
LOL! Their quote isn't even a ripoff, it's a full-fledged heist.
Ouch. I assume there’s a reason they wanted to replace everything, maybe they have to in order to warranty their work? Either way it’s fixed and I’m happy it didn’t cost all that much. Plus I fixed the zoom ring rubber that needed to be done anyway
Awesome video! I never considered repairing my own lens. Considering I’ve repaired nearly everything else, this doesn’t seem outside the realm of possibility.
If I had some real damage to the elements and glass it would have been a much harder repair. This only really took like 45mins to do (if I wasn’t filming) that added an extra 3hrs lol
Unfortunately Sony seems to not sell any spare parts in Europe :/
Was there no way to glue in something to replace the post?
Ok thanks, for the reply, ( I wasnt expecting it!). I'm in your postion and was I was thinking of using "Methyl Methacrylate" which is supposed to be stronger than the polycarbonate (its a weld rather than a glue). If you have already considedred this and found it too weak you have save me some wasted effort Jim@@LeeZavitz
Duclos vibes
Can't believe you plugged sony support at the end when it was sony that basically tried to rip you off. Doesn't exactly make them seem like a trustworthy company.
It’s not Sony it’s a contracted repair facility that does repairs (and possibly services such as cleaning).
It’s not sony ripping me off. Its a third party repair shop they recommend since there is no official sony repair shop in Canada
@@LeeZavitz Unless Canada Sony pro support repairs get sent to the US, it's basically Sony ripping you off.
Ahaha just by the title you know its sony
Isn't the price they quoted nearly the brand new price of the lens now?
Basically they wanted to rebuild the entire lens. Maybe they have to just to be safe?
Great work!!! Very nice Ive been into a nikon myself and I was holding my butt cheeks tight a couple times but in the end I fixed it!
Who tried ripping you off?
Sony authorized repair absolutely sucks. Embarrassing how shi++y their customer service is. They absolutely positively WILL NOT ANSWER THEIR PHONE

My respect for you just doubled. This video is awesome thank you for showing the process. I have a couple lenders that need cleaned and I’ve been afraid to take them apart. I feel a little more confident now after watching you deal with all of the electronics inside that lens that I could take apart a prime vintage lens and put it back together again.
