Thank you Jay. Why do so many people always say that the offense wouldn't be as free moving, or something like that, but never mention that the Bulls never defended anything close to the Warriors from a shooting, spacing and movement perspective?
No on on that roster is going to be effective chasing Curry all night (please don't give me this Ron Harper nonsense). No one on that roster can really contest KD's jump shot. And then you still have Klay.
People also like to forget that that warriors team was also an elite defense. They had a 104 defensive rating in an era where its far, far harder to defend due to rule changes, increased spacing and focus on efficient offense.
Meanwhile, Harper, Rodman, Longley's defenders are cheating off of them the entire game and Kerr, Kukoc and Longley are targets on defense any time they're on the floor.

Still seems like they're dismissing defense. Whenever there has been a team that got up into Steph Curry he's been rattled. We just saw Durant this year when Boston double teamed him and he was rattled. Plus they were talking about the free flowing Golden State offense but what about the triangle offense the Bulls ran to perfection where everybody touched the ball. At the end of the day defense wins championships and the best defensive team could stifle the best offense and that '95-'96 Bulls had four of the best man on man defenders ever and nobody can tell me that the Warriors would just getting their shots easily, whenever they wanted.

'Whenever there has been a team that got up into Steph Curry he's been rattled'
This narrative is so false and only applies to the few bad games he has, think to yourself how many bad series has curry had in his career? 1 maybe 2 so for the other series which hes been excellent do you think those same teams werent playing the same 'get up to him defence'. I promise if he had a bad series this finals vs the celtics people will say the exact same narrative but because he didnt nobody says that.
'We just saw Durant this year when Boston double teamed him and he was rattled. '
Kd in 2017 was pre achilles and also 4 years ago on a team where you cant double him like the celtics did so that statement doesnt make sense.
The warriors have a better overall team, better bench, system, more spacing and doesnt rely one 1 guy to get 50% of their points and also doesnt have a guy who is a problem offensively(rodman).Very easy to bring up the defence narrative when the bulls never had to worry about guarding guys past 15ft in a slower paced era dominated by bigs not guards 90% of the time,These guys are running sets 30ft out.17 warriors were the 2nd best defence with an average height of 6'7 (minus curry).

Warriors have a high chance of success even with 90s rules, for these reasons
    1. Ball movement
The ball just never stops moving, not by dribbling but by passing it to the right person. Their ball always finds the guy who needs to shoot so the argument of locking down Durant, Curry, and Thompson using a man-to-man defense is kinda stupid.
    2. Efficiency and volume of outside shooting
They are not just shooters, they are high efficiency and volume shooters.

Pippen has a better chance of making it tough on KD than the Warriors stopping MJ. It'll likely just become a outscoring match between MJ & KD. GSW's 3pt shooting is OP, but Bulls were pretty good at the time too, granted they didn't shoot as much. MJ was 42% from 3pt, Pippen 37%, Kukoc 40%, Buechler 44%, Kerr 51%, so I think they can hang when it comes to shooting too. It just really comes down to who gets stopped, MJ or KD.

The lanes are as open as they are today because there are shooters all over the floor and defenders are spread further apart. Other than Kerr there's nobody really on the Bulls I'd want shooting the 3 ball and up against a team defense the Bulls would be screwed offensively with Rodman on the floor who can't really do much scoring outside of 5 feet there's no real reason with a defensive anchor like McGee protecting the rim you can't just play the defense they played on Rondo before he added a better 3 to his game and just sag off him and do a soft double team on someone else. I'd imagine they'd have Klay and Draymond double team Jordan almost the whole time since it'd be hard to punish them for leaving Rodman open.

@@Tecmo84 Well, if we're talking about the double team and leave a man open bit yes we're only talking about Rodman. As for leaving the rest open for 3s, that's kinda where it gets tricky because it depends again on if this hypothetical match up is happening in 1997 or 2017. I'm pretty sure 1997 was the last of those few years they shortened the 3 point line to up scoring in games. Pippen, Kukoc and Harper were 32%, 33% and 29% career 3 point shooters and most 3s back then were pretty wide open, so with a normal size 3 point line generally speaking yes I'm fairly comfortable sagging off them to close driving lanes if I'm coaching the team defending them. With the shortened 3 point line maybe less so since all 3 were shooting well beyond their career averages in '97 but the line being shorter also means less spread and space to cover.

Hypotheticals are always fun, and defensively the Bulls match up with the Warriors much better than people think. Jordan, Pippen, and Rodman all made 1st team all defense that year and Ron Harper was no slouch either. And all 4 of those guys were between 6'6" and 6'8". The ultimate switchable defense before it became cool.
Let's also not forget that the "most talented team ever assembled" was on their way to being bounced in the western finals a year later had it not been for a Chris Paul injury and 27 consecutive missed 3 pointers so not like they were utterly unbeatable.
With that said I still think it would be a toss up 7 game series and whoever imposes their style the most consistently would win. If the Warriors can push the pace then they probably win. If the Bulls control the tempo and slow it down like the Rockets did to the Warriors in 2018 then the Bulls probably win.

It's really laughable how 90's defense is ignored. First and foremost, the players back in the 90's were bigger..that's right, bigger than most of the players today. Look at the difference in their body types. My point is, if they're playing by 90's rules, Bulls will simply wear those guys down PHYSICALLY and MENTALLY. I mean, guys skip games today not because they're injured but because they want to "rest", lmao. Give me a break.

I think it would have been hard for GSW to guard MJ but it would have been hard to defend the whole GSW team. Too much movement and also the bench is very important yeah the 5 starters can matchup but on the bench this is a whole different history. Bulls were winning games with 90 pts, GSW were 90pts in the 3rd quarter that shows the defence in Bulls era and offence in GSW era. But we will never know maybe MJ would have scored 60 every game or maybe KD would have been unguardable to any player in the Bulls team.

So, the scores in the 90s are actually a bit misleading. It wasn't only a matter of better defense (tbh, I'm not convinced any part of it was due to better defense).
      1) the pace was slower (~92 possessions per game in 1996 vs ~97 in 2017).
      2) Offenses are far more efficient now that they emphasize 3s, shots at the rim and FTs.
      3) Defense is much harder to play now do to the amount of space all the extra shooting creates.

you're overestimating the bulls if you think they can properly guard the 2016-2017 warriors with KD, Steph, and Klay. The only way you beat that team is by shooting them out the gym. It took one of the greatest shooting performances in Finals history for the Cavs to take a game from them. it was an outlier and that was the only game the warriors lost the entire playoffs. there is too much scoring talent on that team, along with curry running around the court which will scramble their defense and generate open looks for KD and Klay. And they have elite defenders in Klay, Draymond, and Iggy. They will be able to limit, the rest of the bulls squad, minus jordan, and drop 120+ a night pretty easily. It's just too much to deal with and it doesn't really matter what you do defensively, you just pray that your team is hot and can score like 130+.

It's not about the rules/officiating. It's play style. If you take them from 1996 and just have them play vs '17 Warriors, the Bulls will lose by a minimum of 30pts. It's going to be a sweep as well. The Warriors will humiliate the Bulls every night. I think any team that made it to the playoffs the past 3 years will DOMINATE the Bulls in every series. That is if you just make them play vs one another right away.
But if you let the Bulls adjust first to modern play style, training, conditioning, get them familiar with the thought of centers moving fast and taking 3s, let them know and adjust to seeing 7 footers taking step back 3s or point guards taking 3s from half court, if you let the Bulls train and prepare and adjust (even their bodies) to the modern style, I'd say it's Bulls in 5.

I cant see how the Bulls would be able to handle the pace and versatility of the 17 Warriors..
The Bulls had incredible defense at the time, however, a lot of the toughness came from the interior.
The Warriors had 4 starters who could space the floor and were legitimate threats from the perimeter. Other than Jordan, Pippen and Harper, I cant see any of the other Bulls players defending effectively from the perimeter. I think Golden State would be able to create too many opportunities and the Bulls would end up playing a huge game of wack-a-mole on defense.
