  • The Flowers of Manchester | Old Trafford | 06.02.2018 | Munich 60th Anniversary
Sung by Pete Martin as part of a service held at Old Trafford to mark 60 years since the Munich air crash which killed 23 people, including eight Manchester United players.
    Munich 58
The crash, on 6th February 1958, happened on United's return from a European Cup tie in Belgrade.
    The Flowers of Manchester:
One cold and bitter Thursday in Munich, Germany,
Eight great football stalwarts conceded victory,
Eight men will never play again who met destruction there,
The flowers of English football, the flowers of Manchester
Matt Busby’s boys were flying, returning from Belgrade,
This great United family, all masters of their trade,
The pilot of the aircraft, the skipper Captain Thain,
Three times they tried to take off and twice turned back again.
The third time down the runaway disaster followed close,
There was slush upon that runaway and the aircraft never rose,
It ploughed into the marshy ground, it broke, it overturned.
And eight of the team were killed as the blazing wreckage burned.
Roger Byrne and Tommy Taylor who were capped for England’s side.
And Ireland’s Billy Whelan and England’s Geoff Bent died,
Mark Jones and Eddie Colman, and David Pegg also,
They all lost their lives as it ploughed on through the snow.
Big Duncan he went too, with an injury to his brain,
And Ireland’s brave Jack Blanchflower will never play again,
The great Matt Busby lay there, the father of his team
Three long months passed by before he saw his team again.
The trainer, coach and secretary, and a member of the crew,
Also eight sporting journalists who with United flew,
and one of them Big Swifty, who we will ne’er forget,
the finest English ‘keeper that ever graced the net.
Oh, England’s finest football team its record truly great,
its proud successes mocked by a cruel turn of fate.
Eight men will never play again, who met destruction there,
the flowers of English football, the flowers of Manchester

If you visit Old Trafford you will see the the words to the Flowers of Manchester written down and attributed to "Anon".
This song was actually written by my Father Eric Winter.
If you don't believe me ask Mick Groves who recorded a CD of this song at the ground.
Mick Groves was a member of The Spinners sometimes called The Liverpool Spinners and my Father got them their first recording contract.

I was there that day. I worked for United back then and about a month before I had spoken to a relative of Harry Gregg's whilst working in the office. She spoke to me about how it would probably be the last time he would ever be at Old Trafford when he went to a game that was coming up. Little did I know he was up in the stands with Sir Alex until my Mum (who has been a United fan since the days of Georgie Best) turned to me and said he, "oh my god there's Harry Gregg!" I couldn't believe it but there he was, he had come back again for one last time. True to his family member's word he never came back to Old Trafford.
The other thing that really stuck with me this day was the snow. When I say it began snowing as soon as we started singing "The Flowers of Manchester" I mean the very second. Pathetic Fallacy in action. Like God looked down on us and wept with the cold tears that sent the Busby Babes to their graves. Soon after the song finished we had the thousands of fans singing "We'll never die" I couldn't muster any sound. I was too busy weeping.
I was born in 1993 and never watched the babes. But to anyone who tells you football is "Just a game" tell them otherwise. This is our History as Mancunians, this is our culture as United fans, this is our family and our heritage. This is MUFC.
Edit: In fact you can see me, my Mum and Dad at the very bottom of the frame at 1:07 I'm the ginger with the glasses, she has a grey hat on and my dad has his United Beanie on.

To all the Liverpool and City and Leeds fans that mock Munich how would you guys like to see your friends die? How would you like it if your football team crashed and your favorite players died?
