Accented Cinema - Episode 78
Sorry Ireland.
Fatal Deviation is one of those so bad it's good movie that everyone loves to make fun of. How can you resist? The film is so funny and so bad! But let's put our mockery aside, and take a deeper look. How does a martial artist with legit cool moves ended up making such a terrible movie?
Today, let's take a deep dive into a bad movie, and see what we can learn from it.

Clearly the problem with this film is that it should have been about an Irish Monk beating up the English.
lmaooo
Based
That could be cool to see too! xDDDD
That would genuinely have been such a great idea though. Maybe include some scotts too...
Somebody get Conor MacGregor on the phone right now and pitch this idea to him
Ah yes, a movie about a tale of a Chinese martial arts tournament, hosted by dark age Irish Catholic monks, in the deeps of the Shaun Lynn Monastery in an obscure mayday festival? My kind of bad movie to have quality content creators to review and enjoy with.
Pretty sure this was a Doctor Who episode actually
@@thefrantasticmissfine It lay have been. I am going to look for this guy Bennett and ask for an interview. Hope all is well with you, by the way. Peace
You guys never been to Irish catholic kumite?
@@Justin-xd7zj hell yeah
Ironically, there was a mass right before it, but it was in Polish
@@fletchkeilman2205 just another day in Poland
I never expected Accented Cinema to rip apart one of the foundational pieces of my country’s culture.
At least you'll always have Grabbers (2012)
A friend of mine used to be the chairperson of the film society in our Irish university. He wanted to do a screening of this film, and emailed the creator to see if he would show up and do a Q&A for the screening. All he got in return was a cease and desist. Unfortunate.
PLEASE tell me more
I'm angry that you have an Irish Kung Fu movie and NO ONE DOES DRUNKEN BOXING
I feel bad for laughing.
Ah yes, racist stereotypes, hilarious...
well when irish people fighting it's usually drunken boxing anyway. it would be interesting if movie set in saudi arabia. then, you'd see the power of drunken boxing.
@@mccauleyconor They are when they work xD
@@mccauleyconor oh, don’t be a moralizer
As an Irish person seeing 90% of the locations be roads and fields during horrible weather hit too close to home
James Bennett eventually went on to work in movies as he wanted and created a "bad movie" cult classic that we still talk about two decades later. Failing upwards? secret genius? or luck of the Irish?
Excellent vid! I love how you showcase why fight scenes don't work, but also re-cutting shots, improving it. Same problem with modern wrestling, camera changes ON impact, weakening the effect. Sláinte! 💚
Oh my God!
O S DUB! O S DUB!
YOU GUYS!! I Love you guys review on this movie!
Ye Tully-arsed bastards ye! 😁😁
was about to comment on modern pro wrestling before I saw this
I’ve come up with a terrible idea for the second Irish Kung Fu movie that I must share with the world:
It’s medieval times, an Irish monk travels on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to see the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (the foremost center of Christian Monks getting into fistfights), while in the Holy Land the monk learns all about Kung Fu. The Monk returns to Ireland to see that Vikings have been raiding countless Monasteries and his is next, now he much train the rest of the Irish Monks Kung Fu in order to fight off the Viking Hordes.
I want to watch
I would watch this in a heartbeat
Ingenious! We need to fund this thing!
It sounds utterly terrible and I would pay you every cent I have to make it real.
@Joe Becker yes, he would be teaching the monk all about eastern jesus and kung fu fighting
I never felt more proud to be of Irish descent than when I saw this dumb movie. Truly we've lived, laughed, loved and survived.
Lol
Did you ever see that streets of rage in real life video some guys made in Galway?
It’s been years but I remember that being pretty fun
I feel like this movie is probably a good example of early Celtic tiger era Ireland. It kinda went from a "no money" to "okay, now we have *some* money" country but people had zero idea what to do with it and questionable taste and behold, Fatal Deviation was born.
This movie was clearly low-budget though..
Hell yes. Fatal Deviation getting a feature on this channel. From Allison Pregler and OSW Review to Accented Cinema, Fatal Deviation is getting the representation it deserves.
We just need to get Red Letter Media to cover it now!
@@funglegunk That would make an awesome Spotlight episode
I really think the concept of "Shaun Lynn Monastery" should be developed into something, it could be really funny.
Was not expecting to see a Pikamee and Tomoshika clip, but I'm also not surprised that Accented Cinema knows/watches vtubers.
what a pleseant suprise tbh
@@Stlwartheart14 One of us! One of us!
@@aggrogahu He fell into the rabbit hole sometimes in 2020, or at least that's when he started to insert Vtuber stuff into his video.
"Sometimes you only see something when it's not there."
Well said. You don't only speak well, but the words you say actually impart insight and knowledge to others. In other words, you are a good teacher. Maybe even great. Some only have one attribute, but you have both. Can communicate AND teach well.
And you can edit and make videos, allowing you to teach and share your ideas with many. You're in the right business bro. Keep up the great work and keep doing what only you can do, otherwise it's like a waste of your skills/gifts etc.
This movie has 1990s Ireland written all over it, but in a good and weird way.
Fatal Deviation 2: Rise of the Fun Fair Umbro Knacker
@@ToruKun1 Fatal Deviation 3: Revenge of the Umbro World Order (UWO)
Excellent breakdown, but what this video succeeded most in was making me really want to watch Fatal Deviation now lol
Honestly a pretty breezy watch. Get a friend, grab a beer. It's a lot of fun to riff on.
It feels like he knows how to fight but a lot of the weird editing choices were to hide the fact that he doesn't understand how to do stage combat and the cheats for hiding everything. The fact that he seemed to be fighting a bunch of people with much less experience likely didn't help. I would be surprised if some of those random cuts to wide was because when they saw the footage of the close take it was clear he didn't connect or the person didn't sell it right and they had to edit with what they had.
Yeah, the lack of intimidating opponents is a big problem because it mostly makes the protagonist seem like a bullying asshole. He's just going around town beating up random schlubs who have far less skill and muscle than him.
I love the prospect of learning the basics and nuances of film by watching both good and bad movies. You spot differences and patterns that differentiates them, you encourage other film makers to do so, and just overall have a good learning experience. After seeing soo many movies, you pick up on a lot of tips and tricks, and critics like you can shine the spotlight on them quite well.
As someone's who is half Irish half Chinese: yikes
That pika really caught me off guard lol
This movie was made in my home town! My karate teachers did the stunts and Keilly's is the pup my parents go to. They asked my Dad to be in it but her turned them down!! I'm so annoyed he passed up his chance to be part of history.
But he was there when they reenacted it years latter
Very well said. Reminds me of something Dan Olson said "Bad cinema has a way of being unpredictable in ways good cinema can never hope to be... Mind you it's by being random rather than deliberate but you know."
Also the constant resets after every hit makes the fights feel like a turn-based RPG from circa Dragon Quest 1.
Hey there, I literally threw my studies aside(i have an exam🤭😖), to tell you about this beautifully simple movie named October, I promise it will keep you in its awe for days, this is actually a bollywood movie, which is quite different from the stereotypical bollywood movie plots. I genuinely believe, that the movie deserves recognition, and the only person , who can do justice to its review, is you .
I would appreciate it, if you could review it🤗
@Sangay Zam thank u man🥺
At least somebody realised it
A rather interesting study of this movie! Another thing I'd like to point out (because, being an artist, I always pay attention to it in movies) is the lighting and the colors used in this movie, compared to others - or rather, the complete lack thereof. It looked like in every scene you showed, they mostly relied on the light that was already there, be it the overcast skies or the supermarket lights and this was another reason why it looked cheap and badly made. It's like they forgot that through light and color you can create a certain mood or tension and thus make fight scenes (or any other scene) far more engaging.
This is probably one of your best videos as it teaches so much about what makes an action scene works via comparison of good and bad. Amazing stuff! Keep it up!
Moving from talking about this one movie to how you make your content was really cool to see. You yet again turned video & topic I wasn’t sure I was going to like & really taught me a lot of things I wasn’t even remotely expecting to think about today. Well done as always!
My family is Irish, so I can tell you it embarrassed me us as well seeing it. But....give him credit. He is pretty good at imitating Van Damme. Super happy you covered this.
Shaun Lynn temple haha!
Post script....not an elbow strike. Palm strike
I have no idea why I called it that.
@@AccentedCinema post script revisited.....no worries. I'm martial artist myself and it just stuck at me. Wasn't trying to be rude. I'm sure you know by now that I hold you and this channel I'm the highest regard. Hope all is well.
One of the most underrated Cinema channels on CZcams. Always a great analysis.
I'm Irish! Can't believe you've done a video on this! I've only ever seen people make fun of it, so I look forward to watching you're serious analysis!
Irish person here, I nevr in my wildest dreams thought that you would talk about Fatal Deviation. Worlds colliding.
This was made in 1998? There's absolutely no reason whatsoever that that man's pants should be hiked up that high
I love watching informed reviewing people like you reacting to good “bad” movies. And “Shaun Lynn temple” is a 10/10 wordplay joke
Fatal Deviation is one of my favourite movies! It's bad, but it's a really wholesome kind of bad you can't help but love. You can tell everyone had a good time filming and for all its faults, you can tell Jimmy knows martial arts like the back of his hand.
After watching this me and some friends started a bad/low expectations film club as it was such a fun watch, so if it wasn't for this film there's a load of great times I'd never have had - thanks Jimmy!
Been looking forward to this video. Did NOT disappoint.
One of my favorite channels making a vid on one of my favorite movies. It's a good saturday
seriously amazing observations, i think you should do this more for other genres
In all my years I never would've imagined you'd be looking at Fatal Deviation. I learned about this movie from bad movie channels and it's pretty legendary in its own way.
The film really highlights the problem with rapid cuts and bad angles. With tour analysis Fatal Deviation could almost be a decent film.
The lady in black just standing still in the background of the fight is killing meeee
"Shaun Lynn Temple" made me laugh. thanks for another great video!
Another great video with really insightful analysis! I'm going to have to watch for that camera angle trick in martial arts movies from now on.
I have to disagree with you about the "kung fu" part, though. The gi says 唐手 (the older way of writing 空手 'karate' in Japanese) and 拳法 ('kenpo' in Japanese). Bennett apparently still has a kenpo karate school in LA now.
I’d love to see your analysis of Cowboy Bebop, both animated and live action.
Many western fans speak of the western, film noir, and science fiction influence, yet fail to notice the impact of 80s/90s Hong Kong crime drama. This element was missing from the live adaptation, which contributed to its failure.
Thanks for reminding me of the Pikamee clip, it's golden
Putting things into words is a great skill to have cultivated, you are indeed great at it
Thank you for this video, I feel like you're making us better film makers
SHAUN LYNN TEMPLE
Very nice
I did not expect to see Pikamee.
You have such a nice calming voice
Basically, better camera literacy and more practice with the fight scenes would have made this movie decent, rather than laughable.
I know he gets some flack sometimes, but Jean-Claude VanDamme is a legend, and a lot of his movies are really fun and entertaining. He may not be the greatest actor out there, but he's an excellent fighter and gives his best in every movie he's in, even if it leads to him overacting a lot of the time.
@@CoryPchajek Yeah! I've watched that one but I was pretty young when it came out, I feel like I should rewatch it someday but I remember it being pretty good.
Love the constructive criticism. Very important to learn from others' mistakes too.
You should also check out Moving Target, another Irish kung-fu movie with a possibly even more outlandish plot involving nuclear codes being smuggled in a case of beer. Great time :D
I say this as an Irishman and with affection but,
Would you look at the big Irish head on him!
Bunch of knackers
Still waiting on that deep, ground breaking, utterly life changing video essay on the “crippled masters” trilogy
The form seen at 1:41 is "Short Form 3" from American Kenpo Karate. For some reason that style has a decent following in Ireland... It's also the art I practice. (I also spotted the Kenpo flame in one of the pictures by the JCVD photo.)
I remember some early film school lessons that taught to cut on the action to help establish continuity. Evidently it didn't work here.
Late to the game, but oh wow I am impressed you actually covered this (the very only) martial arts movie hailing from the Emerald Isles ! To be fair, James Bennett managed to carve out a nice decent career for himself.
I actually tried my hands for the mantle of the 2nd martial arts movie to come out of Ireland , but alas it kinda ended in post-production purgatory...
OMG a movie from my country!! You should check out Moving Target too
You remind me of Filmento, on how you review stuff. You're both my favorite movie reviews.
I-I actually look up to you both, haha...
This is why I'm bad a fighting games. Zero combo game.
Contributing a little piece of insider advice with regards to editing fighting action sequences I randomly came across several years ago from an interview with Jackie Chan or perhaps Sammo Hung (I don’t remember exactly).
The idea was that if the punch was filmed in two shots - e.g. first shot of the punching movement and a second shot of the fist landing and impacting the opponent, they would overlap and replay very slightly the two shots.
So say the first shot is 2 secs long, instead of the second shot start exactly where the first shot ends, they’d overlap time slightly. So the second shot could repeat the last 0.2 seconds of the movement shown in the first shot. Apparently the repeating effect is imperceptible but does give the punch a much bigger impact because the landing force is “multiplied”.
I never did verify if this is true or widely used but it sounds like a plausible technique.
Hope the above helps anyone looking to shoot/edit some fight scenes. If you try it, love to hear if it works for you in a reply below!
This is a great video. And I think its cute/interesting/neat/cool that we could do a similar compare and contrast with this video to Every Frame a Painting's Jackie Chan video. You both make the same comparison of cutting on the action with the Hong Kong action film technique of showing the action. I don't want to imply any "copying". Whether you learned it from that video or independently figured out the same thing, its interesting to see the use of Jackie Chan films to show the difference between the editing in Hong Kong action films and much weaker action editing in western films.
I love the OSW video about this movie.
I was watching a Scott Adkins movie a few months ago (I can't remember which) and who do I see in it? Jimmy F'n Bennett. I don't think he had many lines and he died really quickly, but at least he's in real movies now.
That sponsor introduction was smooooth!!!
Hey, it would be great if you could do a video on Ann Hui's work. Especially since the documentary Keep Rolling just recently dropped. I'd love to see your take on a Ann Hui retrospective.
this was really cute, great work!
also since the bar is so low maybe Foil, Arms and Hog can do a remake/reeboot. >>> Shaun Lynn 2, return of the Danger Noodle!
now we need a Fatal Deviation fan edit!!
Well, that was a class in itself! xD
Irish knows Kung Fu too, who ever though that!? xDDDDD
Great video, AC
Hey, I love your videos. Could you do Into the Badlands? I think it's an incredible series, and I'd love to hear your take on it.
This is one of the best breakdowns of anything I've ever seen lol
This movie is basically The Room for a lot of Irish fans.
nice and hilarious as always
this movie made me go "STATE of your movie, mate!" and I'm not even Irish
I've never thought about giving bad films this much thought. It's a bit like going to a big trash heap and meticulously cataloging everything in it.
Something about the camera cutting in the middle of the action and how it deflates the tension: wasn’t there a thing you said about Jackie Chan is that he’ll “film the hit twice” in that the camera cuts the action but the moment of the strike actually appears twice on film.
I think it was contrasted with a kick from guardians of the galaxy where Nebula does a scorpion kick to someone’s head but the second shot only shows her withdrawing her foot. This lessened the apparent impact where a similar camera cut enhanced it.
So I guess I’m asking if continuous shots are as necessary to maintaining tension as making sure the notes hit the right places?
Ireland be doin good kungfu
Their favorite style is "Drunken master" one😂
Great analysis
I remember reading about this movie on Cracked's comedy website.
Funny bit: The Nanarland (French authority community on B-movies) podcast discussed this movie in their latest episode.
Another great video essay. Btw I hope I can get your thoughtful reply on a comment I left in your Nezha video, as I've been wondering about this. I've been trying to improve my Mandarin while watching movie (that I'm interested in, I don't really like sappy soap dramas). Just gonna copy it here below:
I enjoy your video essays and having watched several movies based on your recommendations and insights, I have a question: Why do many seemingly "blockbuster level" China-made movies have the same issues with cutaways and pacing like you mention here (on Nezha)? Is it influenced by culture, where everything is much faster paced in China these days? Half the time, I give up and turn off the movie as they kept jumping from one scene to another in a very disruptive and jarring manner. Fortunately I can finish Nezha Reborn, but I couldn't with others like Monk Comes Down the Mountain, Dragon Blade, and Mystery of the Dragon Seal. There don't seem many up to the level of like the Wandering Earth.
And here I was thinking that Samurai Cop was the craziest martial arts movie ever made
about the close up, i notice since a couple of year that hollywood likes to intercalate a super wide shot or a top-down video in the middle of nowhere during fight scenes. i always find that immersive-breaking.
Also hollywood likes to slowmo hits when they connect wich weakens the impact. instead, if the slow mo is during the charging of the blow then normal speed when it hits, it will feel better
Honestly, I want to see it now. :D And to me, in my inexperienced opinion on movie making, during alot of the fight scenes is it possible that the pause before making the next move could have been to him having fight scenes with people who weren't trained fighters or martial artists and that was him either taking that into consideration or was it just hi showcasing himself above everyone else?
11:02 it's actually one of my favourite Shaw bros. Films.
Same here! That one is a classic.
Just wanted to pass by and tell you your videos are awesome!
I don't know if video games are your thing, but it'd be cool if you could analyze Sleeping Dogs in your channel. I think it has many things about Chinese culture that are worth placing under a trained critical eye (yours 😉).
Thanks for making my days more enjoyable!
When I saw The Infinite Review's hilarious video on Fatal Deviation, I imagined that would be the last I saw of this obscure Irish film - glad I was wrong! :D
My guy take his time to make an full blown up video analizing an shitty movie that it seems made with an calculator, respect bro. To being honest just by seeing an irish monk in an tournament fight its so much hilarious that i couldnt stop to laughting hahaha , even so i wouldnt watch it even for that purpouse.
1:09 Shaun Lynn Temple. That had me laughing.
One can only hope a (decent) film with dornálaíocht and bataireacht martial arts will come one day.
@Nubiamancy Yep! Dornálaíocht is Irish bare-knuckle boxing and bataireacht is stick fighting, both of which can lead to some pretty brutal fights if used in film.
Hello! Can you make your 2021 best movie for every genre? No specific country, just what you personally like. Thank you!
This helps me take mental notes on how to make good storytelling.
....why Bennett sound to me from somewhere....
AHHH!
From "Commando" bad guy

What I didn't expect is the clip of Pikamee and Hikasa lol.
Good or bad you gotta respect Jimmy Bennett for chasing his dream. Nice breakdown accented cinema!
The arm bar it 04:16 almost gave me a stroke.
As an irish man im suprised, yknow more irish movies than me 😂😂
Lmao never expected to find the "let's kill da ho' clip here of all places. Kinda nostalgic considering that how I discovered VOMS.

Wish you make essay about my favorite director stanley kwan.
is there a video on Lake Changjing?
You probably won’t see this but in Chapter 2, that pose Bennett does is not an homage to Bruce but to JCVD in Timecop. JCVD does the exact post in a similar outfit yo a robber in a mall. The points you made are no different when you compare Bennett to Timecop anyway, but I thought I would mention it.
