I could say that barbershop might have achieved greater profundity in our musical memory had it been performed as seriously as it is here, but that would ignore the necessity of steps in progress that hadn't been achieved yet in The Gilded Age. The Mills Brothers have elevated barbershop to a state of sublimity and brought it to it's likely fullest potential. The sentiments expressed in the lyrics and the age from which they arose are easier to interpret and empathize with when the intentional humor and levity of barbershop are removed.
