The singer said he wrote the song about a time when he lived in Australia, in an apartment, and he lived on the bad side of town, and he lived next to drug dealers, and sometimes other drug dealers would get his apartment mixed with the actual drug dealers next door…he said that so many people would knock at his door, and it unnerved him to the point he never wanted to answer the door. He was terrified. So basically the song is about being paranoid.
So.... something GOOD came from drug dealers? Outrageous! 🙂
the more you know…. that’s cool
Thanks for the info.
I get it. I lived in Detroit until 2012.
@@BillGraper Yes. They're called drugs 🤣
R.I.P. Greg Ham, who played sax on this song, flute on "Down Under," and wrote some of my favorite lesser-known Men At Work songs like "Giving Up" and "The Longest Night."
Came here to find the name of the sax player that died; was not disappointed. TY.
Didn't know he passed away😔
Yes! So happy someone else wanted to bring up Greg Ham. Such an unappreciated musician-- who left us way too soon. What could we have experienced from him if he stayed with us just a little bit longer???
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼Who can it be knocking on my door
So sad to find out about Greg Ham passing. Also, I recently found out about the passing of another sax player, Benjamin Bossi from Romeo Void. 😢😢May both RIP 🙏😢
The sax player was Greg Ham (1953-2012).
Rest in Peace.
Colin is one of the greatest singers, you both should do, “Overkill”.
I just LOVE "Going Somewhere"
Overkill ... acoustic!!! ❤
Amber would love the sax in it.
@@marksimpson1991 Yes!! Have you heard him sing "Can't find my way home".. Oh my god, it's incredible!
Yes! “Overkill” is my favorite Men At Work song. Also love “It’s A Mistake.”
Their song “Overkill” has to be next. And Colin’s solo stuff is worth listening to. And his guest appearance on Scrubs is hilarious.
100%
@@phunkmonkeycookiegarage7773 Add my 100% (for a running sum of 200%)
Yes! Colin's solo, somewhat darker, moodier version of Overkill is great. Love that song!
Yesss! Overkill is the best!!!!
Overkill is my favorite song from them
Men at Work are so unique. I can’t say I can think of any other group that sounds like them. That’s one of the things I really like about them.
Aussie bands have always had a distinct sound to them.
One of my favorites by Men at Work is:
"Be Good Johnny"-- good music, interesting lyrics!
Such an underrated song of theirs. Love it too👍🏼
"You're strange kid Johnny, BUT I LIKE YOU!!"
YES!
You've loved Men at Work and INXS.
You should try another Aussie band. Midnight Oil - Beds are Burning.
That’s my alarm clock song! And it works.
@@debbiewashabaugh9891 🤣🤣
Yes!!
Try also: Faker "Huricane", Eskimo Joe "From The Sea", and 78 Saab "No Illusions". All Australian bands.
Oh YES!!!! DEFINITELY
"Overkill" is another good Men at Work song
"It's a Mistake" is my favourite one by them. It's like a reggae sound with a deep message, with their trademark fun vibe. For 80s sax though, I need to request once more "NEVER SAY NEVER" by ROMEO VOID
Agreed, Jordan and Amber should definitely check that one out
It's a Mistake , and Overkill are absolutely some of the great classics! 😁
Another great pick. Their sound was so distinctive even for the '80s.
Suggestion for Female Friday: Norah Jones "Don't Know Why". I'm sure you'll love it. Her voice is pure magic.
Yes, I love that song.
I'll second that. Also like her cover of Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight"
She does an amazing version of Black Hole Sun. Stunning
_QuarterFlash!_ "Rindy" Ross is female lead *and* plays big sax! So 80s!
Pretty sure the guy in the song is crazy recluse. He says: "I've done no harm, I keep to myself. There's nothing wrong with my state of mental health" and asks: "Is it the man come to take me away? Why do they follow me? It's not the future that I can see. It's just my fantasy." He's clearly off his rocker.
Another great group from Australia is the Little River Band in the 80’s. They sold so many hits. “Lonesome Loser “ and “Reminiscing “ among so many others. Their harmony is amazing 😻
One of my all-time favorite bands. Their greatest hits, is probably in my top 10
Cool Change, Lady, Man on Your Mind.
I thought their biggest hits were in the late 70’s ,
Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser? He's a loser but he just keeps on trying.
Back in the late 80's I was on a concert in Norway. The band was from Australia, The Black Sorrows. I really love them. Joe Camelleri with the Bull sisters. and they've been here in my hometown several times after.
Overkill is their best by a million miles. This one is still great and was a staple on early MTV. Men at Work was really really good for a few years. "It's a Mistake" is a great anti-war song.
This and "Down Under" put Australia on the international scene in the early 80s (several years before Crocodile Dundee). For your next MaW song, I recommend "Overkill". They also had great songs like "It's a Mistake", "Dr. Heckyll and Mr. Jive", and "Be Good Johnny". Colin Hay's voice is still amazing! P.S. This is video #699... everyone tune in tomorrow for #700 on Female Friday!
You did say on the unboxing video that you wanted to do more Aussie music, so well done! Please do "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House and "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil. Both are Aussie bands that have been around for decades.
@Gerald H YES! "No Promises" is one of the best songs of the 80s, hands down.
@@Shrykespeare "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House - Great suggestion!
@@Shrykespeare Add Olivia Newton John's "If You Love Me" and "B-17" :)
Still waiting on that “Under the Milky Way” by Church from Australia. That’s one that there are really just no words for.
Jay's "antisocial" shirt was the perfect choice for this song's reaction.
So glad I wasn't the only one that caught that.
@@marshanall8632 Which tells you that he's heard the song before.
First time hearing, my arse.
"Be Good Johnny" is a fun one. "It's a Mistake" is a great tune. "Overkill" is the best one. All three, please.😁
I totally agree, ALL THREE stated above are a MUST listen to.
Yes 👍🏼
Now that's what you call a HOOK!! The SAXOPHONE!
Colin the lead singer, has a great voice, I WATCHED HIM ON A SHOW ON T.V. SCRUBS, WHERE HE FOLLOWS AROUND THE STAR OF THE SHOW SINGING WITH JUST A GUITAR AND HIS VOICE AND HE WAS AWESOME!!!!
I remember seeing that in reruns, and It kinda sounded familiar - it took a while before I realized who it was and the song, awesome acoustic version! I got to see him do the song live several years ago when he toured with Ringos All Star Band.
Zach Braff loves him and actually had Colin write “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You” for his movie Garden State.
By far my favorite Men At Work song is Overkill. Both the studio version and an acoustic version released years later are both very good. And the meaning of the song, at least for me, is about learn to let go of things out of your control. I'm sure for others it has different meanings. Plus Colin Hay's vocal on that song is exceptional.
“ Overkill “ is a must !
YES… “OVERKILL”❤️ and “Down Under”… “It’s a mistake” as well.. Colin Hay and Men at work are a fantastic band that crept in and took their own unique place in music history. I feel blessed to be exposed to so much music pre 2010 when out of nowhere melody and uniqueness was pushed away for monotone sounds and (most) every artist sounding the same. This song is about paranoid schizophrenia.. Brilliant writing hidden in a unique melody.
Keep ‘em coming🙂🙂🙂
Overkill needs to be the next Men at Work.
Oh yea, huge hit for them!!
The sound of the 80's. When I hear Men At Work, it's an instant flashback to my teenage days
Overkill is a gem 💎
The tenor sax absolutely does it for me.
Great timing, they are performing this weekend here. Thanks for getting us ready for the show
Saw them about 20 years ago on a whim in a small club on Long Island, NY. They were PHENOMENAL live.
The next Men At Work song should be "Be Good Johnnie", my favorite and I think the most fun....
"Overkill" is by far their best song... Youre welcome :-)
1982 i got cable and this became my fav band
Legends
“Overkill” is another underrated MAW song
Lesser known and seriously underrated are "No Sign of Yesterday" and "No Restrictions", both from Cargo. I would highly suggest giving them a listen.
Blue For You.
I love men at work! This is a great song!
When I was in high school I legit was in a big bathroom with my best friend (cause we were incapable of going alone) she was still in the stall, I picked out what I THOUGHT were her shoes, I knocked three times, she got it and sang “Who can it be now” over and over from her stall (which was actually EPIC!) I jerked my head in the direction of her voice realizing I had the wrong stall at the same time the person in the stall I knocked on said, “GOOD GRIEF, may I have more than 5 seconds?” and my friend just kept singing! There was a pause while my friend sang that line 3 times with sax sound affects, I started to say, I am so sorry but EVERYBODY laughed in that bathroom and the people waiting in line! Then I started laughing and laughed so hard I cried. To this day I see my friend, almost 40 years later and I will sing, “Who can it be now” and we lose it. She always reminds me that her most embarrassing moments of LIFE were with me, I tell her I got her out of her shell! She will say, I was really into the song, including sound affects with the sax, and everybody STARTED laughing, I thought they were laughing at my singing, I am still traumatized! I have another high school bathroom story with that same friend that is so embarrassing but perhaps another one of your videos will make me think of it?!?! 😂 💗
This is one of my favorite Men at Work songs! To me this song has always been about a guy who is kind of a recluse and a little mentally disturbed! I have this album and the whole thing is great!❤️❤️
My top 20 song . I bet you will love their track called Overkill.
Amber, you would LOVE "Keep Feeling Fascination" and "Mirror Man" by Human League!
Midnight Oil "Beds are Burning" real Australian gold
Overkill!!! Great song that was even featured on Scrubs. One of my fav episodes because of the song and Colin’s guest appearance!
For more Men at Work songs with a story you can't go past 'Overkill', ''Be Good Johnny', 'It's a Mistake' and 'Dr Heckyll and Mr Jive'. Also good to see you dipping your toe into Oz music. There is a huge catalogue of great bands and great songs that US and UK have no idea about.
Men At Work are an Australian rock band formed in Melbourne in 1978 & best known for breakthrough hits such as "Who Can It Be Now?" & "Down Under". They had some other songs such as "Be Good Johnny", "Overkill", "Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive", "It's A Mistake", "Everything I Need", "Maria", "The Longest Night". Men At Work performed "Down Under" at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, alongside Paul Hogan of "Crocodile" Dundee.
Overkill! You've got to hear this Men At Work gem!!!
If you want the joy of sax in the 80's, Quarterflash`s "Find Another Fool" or "Harden My Heart ".
A storytelling classic (that's based on a real tragedy): "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot.
Truly a great song! But then again I live on Gitchee-gumee's South shore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I remember when this happened. Very sad.
Yes!!! I've been meaning to request that one! But fair warning, guys, you will need tissues.
@@robertbrentar2657 a Yupper, eh! 😊
A legendary song of The Great Lakes
@@SGlitz Ya Der!
"Overkill" I'd have to say is my favorite song by them. This song and "It's a Mistake" run a close 2nd place. Too me this song doesn't have a message or tell a story so much. It's just a good Jam song.
Absolutely OVERKILL is another track. IMO so underrated.
"I Didn't Hear A Saxophone In 'Down Under' "
That's because Greg Hamm, the guy who played the saxophone in this video, was playing a flute in the music video for "Down Under"
You gotta do their song "Overkill".
The song that made the biggest impact on me before I reached my teenage years was Blue Velvet by Bobby Vinton, felt like a person could just wrap it around themselves like a warm blanket.
Anothe Aussie band is …. Midnight Oil…. Their song… “Beds are Burning” was very popular back in the day.. And a story worth listening to…
"Be Good Johnny" is a really great Men at Work tune. Take it from me....Colin's namesake :)))
Being an 80's chick, I'll never forget how fun Men at Work videos were! MTV truly WAS once music videos ONLY... it was bliss! I miss those days! I'd trade a smart phone for my MTV any day!✌
I'm not necessarily one to ask tho, I'd also prefer a handwritten letter and a REAL book too.... 🙂😉✌
Grew up in Australia in early 80s, listening to bands like men at work, inxs, midnight oil, and many more. I saw Colin hay at Manchester appollo here in UK a few years ago.🇭🇲🇬🇧 I still listen to a lot of oz/nz tunes from that time, a lot of good memories, 👍 😊🇭🇲
Since you both like songs with sax solo's, I strongly recommend David A. Stewart - Lily Was Here ft. Candy Dulfer. No lyrics, but holy molly! that sax is speaking a thousand words!
Excellent suggestion, love that one. I'm like Amber, drawn to songs featuring the sax. If she enjoys instrumentals as well as vocals, she REALLY needs to look into anything by one of the best sax players ever, the late, great Boots Randolph. He was the GOAT in my opinion. One of his greatest hits ,"Yakety Sax" is so catchy and upbeat, but he had SO many hits it's impossible to pick a favorite. From upbeat, to slow and romantic and everything in between, there's no one better than Boots !
This!.... 💚💙💜 - Candy Dulfer, "Lily Was Here"
My husband and I saw Men at Work and INXS was there backup band. This was in 1983 near Chicago. I had never heard of INXS. I loved Men at Work but INXS was really a good band. I had to go out and buy the album at the time. So I had both their albums. INXS became very popular in the few years to follow but I really never heard much of Men at Work after that. We really enjoyed the concert though. Both great bands from Australia!
Oh yes.thats right .I remember his scrubs appearance and absolutely his solo music is top rate.Love men at work..another Aussie classic
please react to men at work "overkill". that song has been my companion, i think the lyrics are very good and it is a different kind of vibe of a men at work song, but in their unique sound. also, for more australian bands, i recommend to react to Nick Cave "into my arms", Silverchair "Tomorrow", inxs "need you tonight" and kylie minogue "locomotion"
You would both like another Aussie band called The Models with their song, "Out of Mind, Out of Sight". Great horns and a strong rock beat
This is one of the greatest songs of the 80's! It's not hard to understand at all. The lyrics are very clear and concise and the song is clever and well written. One of my favorites from this era of musuc.
I remember watching this video on MTV a million times. (yes for all you kids out there A MILLION TIMES)
You really need a U2 song. Start with Pride (in the name of love). U will love it and love the message in the lyrics
U2 blocks most of the reactions on YT so it's hard to do for anybody.
"It's A Mistake" "Overkill" "Be Good Johnny" are other hits from them. Out of these three, please react to "Overkill" It's good. Thanks! Two requests: Peter Schilling--Major Tom, and The Different Story. Icehouse--Electric Blue has longer saxophone notes in it.
The saxomophone in this song reminded me of a great female Friday candidate - Quarterflash. The lead singer is Rindy Ross and she also plays sax. "Harden My Heart" is a rocker!
These guys were an MTV staple in the early eighties. They were a fun band. Very original.
Please watch Morgan James, featured with Postmodern Jukebox covering "Dream On" by Steven Tyler and Aerosmith, and then watch The Warning, a sisters' power trio that is taking the Net by storm doing their songs "Choke" and "Evolve". It would be a fantastic Female Friday! (My other favorite reactors finally had time to do Morgan James on this song and loved it - hint hint hint).
Morgan James on Dream On is one of my three favorite covers of all time… the other two being Pentatonix’s Hallelujah and Disturbed’s The Sound of Silence
I agree with both suggestions, but for The Warning I would recommend Dust to Dust (czcams.com/video/Jb7Hi0X16DU/video.html) or Survive (czcams.com/video/E62SVvLw9FI/video.html), only because they have a better chance of not being blocked.
The song isn't just about some guy who wants to be left alone -- it's about someone suffering from mental health problems, primarily paranoia and delusions.
Yeah, there's a very genuine story behind the lyrics
Actually; he was trying to avoid the tax collector, at the time.
@@TheRatsCast If you notice the apartment in the video, it is rundown. Colin Hay's has stated that he lived in bad neighborhood and his apartment was often mistaken for the drug dealers and he would have people all times of night. He also said that even when it wasn't those people it was always someone who wanted something from him. I haven't seen him state anything about taxes....
I agree with you.
@@andrew348 you’re story is correct. I believe a drug dealer previously lived in his flat and “customers” were still coming.
When I was 12 and was learning to play sax, I would walk around the house playing the sax parts from this for practice.
You also have to remember how prevalent cocaine use was for musicians, there are a lot of songs about paranoia.
This song comes back to my playlist every few years. 👍
If there’s a humorous side to paranoia this is it!
Another great Aussie band - Hiatus Kaiyote. The genre is “future-soul”. They’re lead singer is Nai Palm, perfect for Female Friday! ✌🏾
Breathing Underwater 👏🏾 Lace Skull 👏🏾Nakamarra 👏🏾Molasses 👏🏾 Borderline with my Atoms 👏🏾 you can’t miss!
Another great Aussie band: The Easybeats from the 60s. With lead singer Steven Wright, not the deadpan comic though he is a funny dancer in the video Friday on My Mind. Very Beatlesque.
I love Amber's hair style here. Yes, Men At Work have a very unique sound.
My favorite Men At Work song is Overkill. It also has a kind of menacing vibe to it as well.
You guys would definitely like their song Down By The Sea. Keep it up y'all!
Omg i love that one! Not many people mentions it haha
He's paranoid. That's how simple it is. Just have fun with it.
This is my absolute fave Men at Work song! Love the reaction as always
"Overkill" - Colin Hay solo acoustic version. Colin is the lead singer and chief song writer for Men At Work. Also: "Be Good, Johnny" is an excellent (and overlooked) song of theirs. Another 80s song you should check out is "Missing You" - John Waite
I like Be Good Johnny too. You're right - very overlooked little gem. : )
I've always loved Colin Hay's voice, very under-rated. You guys should react to this video, he's doing their song "Overkill" solo. A more recent video. czcams.com/video/quzZaJI4b1A/video.html
He is a Scotsman (Scottish accented)
@@jimmayors2315 Yes, I know.
Thx so much for sharing this. It was lovely!
The version from TV show "Scrubs" is pretty cool. czcams.com/video/jrGmcuj44DQ/video.html
"Down Under" will hit you as the fun quirky song, but "Who Can It Be Now" is honestly the one with staying power. If you spin it a couple of times, you will grow to love it, especially if the audio quality is better than in that video.
😆 WOW! Another blast from the past from my highschool days! LOVE IT! THANK YOU GUYS!
still so good after all these years and you're right, the sax makes the song
It’s paranoia and Agraphobia.
Gotta disagree I’ve been to thousands of concerts and Lead Singer Colin Hay had the best storytelling show I’ve ever seen! He is one of the greatest singer songwriters ever. “overkill” solo acoustic is amazing and also there’s a band version. Story of my life
Just watched Pentatonic "Little Drummer Boy" - show cases ever member and brought tears of joy to my eyes and ears!! You would love it. Also the song "Sing" was written by them and terrific! Loved it immensely!!
10CC "I'M NOT IN LOVE",, DREADLOCK HOLIDAY" & "THE THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE"...MUST HEAR CLASSICS.
Your next Men at work song should be “it’s a mistake”
Definitely - with the official video.
also "Be Good Johnny"
Loved your reaction. Have to say that I found it hilarious that you were reacting to a song that is basically about a guy that is wanting to be left alone and you were wearing a shirt that says antisocial. LOL
A great early 80s flashback...Fun song, thanks guys, From a little tree hut in the middle of the bush sitting outside at night, it took about half and hour to write the song. It just popped in his head...Peace
I'm so old, I'm only here for the smiles.
Great song!
These were the days!! Men at Work we’re classic. Excellent choice!!
I've always thought this song referenced paranoia. Colin Hay is amazing!
I've seen them live at Pink Pop 1983 they were an unique experience, fire and dynamite like performance. And the singer Colin Hay also plays a range of instruments for the rest he's just insane🤪🤣Men at Work just so 80's still love them.
I miss these guys, so 80's.
Miami vice music on their episodes were phenomenal.
They had two other hits
Be good Johnny
It's a Mistake.
Then just like that they were gone. So said just like the 80's.
My late teens had Everything, then grunge came, a whole new group of people,
Got married had kids my party days were OVER
But life Began again with FAMILY.
The Miami Vice period of the 80's had such great music and artists! In The Air Tonight/Phil Collins,. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Jan Hammer all put out some awesome music.
Hey family, Pastor Fred here. Another great sax song is Friend of mine by Jackson Brown ft Clarence Clemmons and Darryl Hannah... very co!!
"Everything I need !" Is their best song
That's my unknown number ring tone. 😁 love it when someone hears it and recognizes it.
You must have a great sense of humor who can it be now hilarious
I love these guys. The voiiice is stunning and I'm with Amber on the sax.. Love it!
"The chorus and the instruments make the music." Well that's such an impressive observation lol. Love your critique none the less. 81' and 82' were murder years for the 80's with amazing songs. Journey "Don't stop believing", Corey Hart " Sunglasses at night" " Men at Work "who could it be now and down under" Toto "Africa and Hold the Line".
He’s vocals are second to none
Luv these Aussies! I think BE GOOD JOHNNY is my favorite.
This was my jam back then! And it still jams!! Colin Hay also has some great solo songs.
