As an autistic person, Donnie was amazing. His aversion to touching weird textures/physical contact was incredibly relatable, and Raph’s line in the movie of “This isn’t a hug Donnie, it’s a rescue” just hit me in the heart man. His family knows about his quirks and accepts and works around it. Also love how they did low-empathy. Typically they’ll show it as no-empathy and something to be “fixed” and how it makes you a “bad person.” Donnie wasn’t like that and it was great to see. I love him so much just for how incredibly relatable his reactions and quirks are. (There’s defs better ways to explain it, this is just from my experience)

Real talk, this show/film actually helped me to understand myself a bit better. I'm on the Spectrum (high-functioning, but I have my quirks) and I've never been able to explain why I hate touching certain fabrics/shirt buttons, or why I'm so easily distracted, or why I love dubstep-esque music, or why I just have a tendency to not understand social queues or make loud noises/actions when I'm excited. I always thought those were things that I did cos I'm "attention-seeking" (I'm called that a wee bit) or just plain weird, but the videos looking at Donnie's ASD/Neurodivergent moments actually made me realise that I'm not doing it for that, it's just a stim/quirk of mine

The biggest difference for Mikey isn't his personality but how his family treats him.
2012 Mikey also stood up for himself and often was the family therapist but he was treated like the village idiot, despite having his smart moments too.
Most of the Mikey-centric episodes from 2012 have him fuck up something important in a dumb way, or him being right about something and no one believing him. And it never gets resolved! There's no arc where his family learns to trust his judgement!
2018 Mikey is the beloved baby of the family, but he's also INCREDIBLY strong and mystically gifted. And even though his brothers treat him like he's a child sometimes, he's still respected and heard.

    • @TheRibottoStudios
      @TheRibottoStudios Před rokem +120

to add to this as a 2003 fan, 03 Mikey is kind of like the 2012 Mikey, but Michelangelo there DID learn from his past errors, like in the episode Grudge Match he really stepped up and actually listened to Leo, and Leo, even in his depression heard Mikey's own fears and understood them, but still pushed Mikey. Mikey and Leo in the 2003 show had a great understanding of each other.
To the point where IT'S MIKEY not Donatello the smart one who states outright how hard it must be for Leo to be the leader, as him being the leader allows everyone ELSE to be who they want to be. Mikey in 03 is observant when he needs to be, comedic when he needs to be, but when things gets real this turtle brings his A game 100%! Mikey has a good relationship with all his brothers in the 03 show, also shown when he gets seriously hurt, they all go mama bear mode especially Raph. But it's not that way with just Mikey either, something I really liked was when Leo got poisoned it was Donatello who stood by his side and protected his big brother when he was out of commission. Switch ups like that were nice to see.

@@TheRibottoStudios honestly, that's the kind of thing I love about Mikey. He's layered. In 2012, we also see that he's not a complete screw up. He does understand when he needs to be serious. As seen in the season 2 finale when he hugs Raphael to get him to calm down so he doesn't possibly get killed.
He may be the baby of the group, but he does have more going on his brain than people give him credit for.

    • @AnimeWolf5193

Adding on to that, I'll say this about Mikey in 2012, they did give him some notable skills.
Before 2012, Mikey was just the "party dude;" Leo was the best ninja, Raph the muscle, and Donnie had smarts. Mikey could hold his own fine, but his brothers usually outshined him in the action stuff.
2012, they did give him some subtle changes. If you watch, Mikey now is the better acrobat. He moves a bit faster and has better agility. We also see that he works more instinctually (aka, "Mikey does not think" scene) and has potential if he were to apply himself.
I think both these shows have done good stuff in terms of developing Mikey into a more realized character.

She's allowed to be her own person, have her own interests, be strong from the start, and not need to "be trained" or be held back while the boys get all the glory. She's every bit as part of the team as the rest of them. She's smart, she's funny, she's sassy, and she's not perfect. The show is great in other aspects, absolutely, especially comedy, but they usually show family bonds only in very critical situations, and it's as if they're telling viewers that THAT's how you should behave, be tough, minimal affection, and keep distance from your fam (and other borderline toxic masculinity traits mixed up there) until they're short of being on the verge of dying. Frankly, I just assumed Cass was gonna be Jennika from the IDW comics. Then the Cass bomb dropped, and I just could not shake the feeling that the writers were prepping to win at diversity bingo by giving us a multi-racial lesbian couple. Splinter isn't trying to manipulate them with emotional distance. He gets interrupted when trying to set a prize to motivate and they interrupt because they value the love and family affection of a hug more than anything else he can offer.
It shows his flaws as a father, but also shows it is in no way malicious or purposeful. It also plays into the aspect that his former life as a movie star desensitized him to normal and healthy dynamics.
As a human he hid his natural accent to be more American on the silver screen. Explaining why he sounds so different in flashback moments. It also shows why he would put value in the names for the kids but not use them as much because he can easily become overwhelmed. He was good intentioned but lived most of his life following orders and directives and lacked personal dedication and ambition. (Both from his lineage and from working in film)
His callousness is balanced out by his hands off approach and general support of the boys. Though it's not limitless and he does discipline them occasionally.
Even so, with a good foundation of martial arts training on the body, mind, and soul, with the addition of modern influence the turtles became very supportive of healthy boundaries and affection. Which is why they put a lot of stock into respecting Splinter and learning from him.
It's a very layered set of circumstances that makes the hug episode so interesting and telling of their dynamic. Since if he was more distant, emotionally unavailable, or mean they wouldn't care enough to fight for something as simple as a hug from their father.

The genius level of Donnie in Rise version is borderline God-like, creating high tech weapon from nothing. While 2012 version of Donnie's invention seems to be made from junk or spare parts, which is more grounded and realistic than Donnie's overly sci-fi tech. It almost as if Rise Donnie is a so much of overcorrection to the way his character has been treated in past iterations that he can come across as being a bit overpowered. I can't remember an episode that showcase Donatello and Raphael interacting a lot, or Mikey and Raph, or Leo and Don. It's usually just Leo and Raph hang out a lot, and Don and Mikey hang out a lot. I think after the 2003 iteration and 2012 iteration, where there were comedic moments, yet the overall tone was serious, people including myself, were looking at this with their skepticals on. The 2003 series was dark and looked into each Turtles psyche in interesting ways via solo episodes or pitting a Turtle with someone else, like Raph with a child, Donnie with an artist, Leo with another mentor, Mikey with Splinter. The 2012 series was more comedic, but had darker moments, such as Splinter's death. It was hard not to look at this iteration, and go "wait what?"
BUT after giving it a chance I realized this is actually the second best iteration after the 2003 version. For me, for me. Each brother feels distinct, I honestly love the change up in the group dynamic, with the order now being Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo. And I love the turtles being based on actual real life turtles. Leo is a red eared slider, from his red markings, Mikey is a box turtle, and like Leo and Don can hide in his shell, Donnie is a soft shell turtle, and Raph is a snapping turtle. The reason why Don wears the battle shell, is because of his softer shell making him vulnerable, which they address in the movie. And honestly, the species each fit each brother REALLY well too.
I would LOVE to see another crossover event with the 03 Turtles and these boys, cause BET Raph and Leo would be STUPEFIED to see themselves in such a new light. And honestly one of my all time favorite moments is Donnie going "I'd probably say something like look over there-PUSH!" because he actually says push it's hysterical. And I like that they seem to kind of take on fanon ideas in this iteration too. Not to mention the animation is downright incredible at times.

Excellent breakdown of the series! I think the only thing I can disagree on is the 'Leo becoming a leader out of nowhere' thing. It's definitely a subtle current throughout the series, but Leo does display moments of leadership, especially when he managed to outsmart Big Mama (a notoriously sly villain), something that I think contributed to Splinter's eventual decision. But, something that people tend to miss is how *unhappy* Raph is as the leader. He's not acting as a brilliant leader, he's acting as a scared, overprotective big brother. This is something the movie pushes pretty blatantly, and he snaps at Leo for not understanding this. Raph is a good leader, even if he lacks the strategist brain that Leo has, but it's also obvious that he can't keep handling it. We see him getting overwhelmed from time to time, especially during the Hamato Ninpo unlock scene when he finally breaks down. Leo, for all his unwillingness to be the responsible one since he's used to no one expecting it from him, is capable of taking on this responsibility. Whenever things get hard and Raph is out of commission, he does step up to the plate. The only time we see him lose his cool is during the movie, which is more than reasonable considering his brother has been taken hostage by homicidal aliens.
Speaking about the movie, I think the big thing about Leo's character, in the beginning, can actually be explained by a seemingly throwaway line about how he copes with difficult situations, AKA his gravitation towards overconfidence and comedy. He is seemingly acting out even more than normal because even in the series, Leo wasn't this consistently arrogant. (He had his moments, but we also saw that he had a more subdued, reasonable nature when his insecurities weren't biting him in the ass.) It's obvious that the idea of having to be responsible for his brothers isn't something he's prepared for, especially because of the lack of encouragement from his family on his skills.
Also, I do believe them not mentioning the leader stuff in the movie was purely to make the film viewer friendly, but in a deleted scene at the end of the movie, it does acknowledge Leo being the leader! He's still doubtful of his skills, but Raph does encourage him. (I don't have the deleted scene on hand as it was posted on Twitter some time ago, but it might have been uploaded here on YT by someone already)
Anyway, there's still a chance for the series to come back! The creators have stated that the series hasn't been officially canceled but put on hold, and they mentioned that if the movie did well enough, there is a chance for Nickelodeon to revive the series! So, here's to hoping for that!
Edit: Found the deleted scene for those who were curious!

The person thought that Leo was joking to try and get Raph to take the leader role back because he was so stressed. What's even more disappointing is all the love the 80s turtles get lately; they get to be the reps in video games now, when Rise could have used that exposure. Nostalgia is one thing, but let the kids watching this get to see it represented. Glad people can at least sing Rise's praises now rather than it being completely forgotten.

@@Rikrobat Definitely give it a shot! They definitely depict Splinter in a different way than usual, but when you get to his backstory (haha holy SHIT his backstory), everything falls into place, and it's incredible. Also, once you get past the initial "hey where's the wise old master from the OG series" thing, it's really refreshing seeing a Splinter who's the Turtles' dad first and master second imo. They're a lot more casual with him which opens up some very interesting character interactions.

I was okay with him not being a wise master, but my initial impression being “Homer Simpson” made it so hard to keep watching. As Cellspex described, sometimes “too much new” is jarring and difficult to process.
And this is a big reason why I don’t mind spoilers of something-this additional context actually makes me interested in seeing the execution. If the only recommendation was “just try again,” I wouldn’t feel as motivated. Knowing that the characterization has a progression makes me feel invested rather than ambivalent. With that in mind, I do want to let you know that the first few eps of Rise ARE on the lighter/sillier side. I personally enjoy them as character interaction pieces, but the plots are pretty goofy--I get the sense that the creators were told to cater to a younger audience at first. But after those initial eps, you can tell the writers got more leeway to get more serious and the lore (and fight scenes) really starts picking up, making the show go from good to great. Just wanted to warn you in advance though, you might have to power through a few eps before you get to the REALLY good stuff.

I kind of agree with the choices made for Leo in this iteration of the Turtles, especially after watching all 4 of the cartoons, and all the movies. Leo has always been the turtle with the most spotlight, usually the main one to get his own full fleshed out arc than his brothers, who are mostly relegated to smaller roles in the team (usually Don and Mikey), and throughout all versions of leo up to this point, he always had the same arc. While each interpretation is handled differently, everything about leo's character struggles and development was based off the fact: He's the leader, and the oldest, so he carries a lot more responsibility on his shoulder more than his brothers. And after seeing that so many times, it was refreshing to see this version try something new.
He may come off as the most overbearing turtle to some in this iteration, but he doesn't feel like he's the sole character of focus for the writers, where other don't get that same love and passion that Leo usually gets. Here you can see the foundation of him being a leader, but you also get to enjoy a lot more of his character than just his struggles, and it allows you to equally enjoy every other turtle a lot more, especially given that they're all good lovable characters. Which is ka reason that I love the RotTMNT: Movie; leo's coming of age story. It's not only about him taking that mantle of responsibility for his family, like every other Leo, but also to rely on his family a lot more. This Leonardo isn't the Leo who gains the spotlight more than his brothers, and who has to be used to move the plot. But he is the Leo who understands the strength of his family, and knows how to support them and inspire them. He's talented, and can take on that responsibility, but it doesn't get in the way of all the lovable aspects of his character, and him expressing his personality.
While I'll admit 2003 Leonardo is my favorite, Rise Leo is really great, and a wonderful take on this character who was always relegated to one main role.
Which is what I feel what rise does best, takes these old establish concepts, and refine it for a new and refreshing take, and doing it well. It's one of the most ambitious of the 4 cartoons for the amount of change it has alone, and I can really respect that.

To be honest, I think in every Leo I've seen, they always been that one turtle that was the most passionate about the martial arts and everything, I can't see the other leo's being kind of like Rise leo if they weren't leader not going to lie, but it's still an fun take away from rise leo, since he is the most laxed and care-free of the four at most times.
But 2012 Mikey and Donnie, I want to love them soo much, but they never really took advantage of their characters. Like Mikey being the most talented when he focuses, and having the potential to lead the team, or Donnie relying on his body more and not his mind, overcoming his insecurities as a fighter, instead of just keeping him to the dragged out love tri-angle with April and Casey (who both of them I don't really like too much). Which is even odd, cause even 1987, or 2003 Mikey and Donnie were more fun and interesting as characters imo.

I always have to point out whenever I hear it mentioned that in the beginning, Splinter calling the turtles by their color made him look detached, but we find out in "Goyles, Goyles, Goyles" (or maybe not "find out" but it's heavily implied) that he refers to them by color because he named them colors instead of the names we know them as.
He meets un-mutated Leo and names him "Green". Then Raph and names him "Green #2" then wonders how he can tell them apart. (Despite them looking nothing like each other). It's doubtful he went from those names to "Leonardo and Raphael", so I can only think the turtles named themselves, or maybe April named them.
he's their parent. Parents rarely if ever refer to their children as anything other than the names they gave them, no matter how much the child may prefer a nickname. (Or in this case, an actual name). He's just not very creative with names, which does fit with his characterization here. But again it isn't stated just implied, and probably just my headcanon, so I can't say anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong, but given how big the payoff was for the rest of his actions and personality, I'm willing to give Splints the benefit of the doubt
*Edit* now that I'm thinking about it, to add a little more credit to that theory, in "fast and the furriest" (I think) splinter is talking to meatsweats about the turtles and MS says "red, blue, orange, purple" and Splinter says "oh you know their names" we take it as a joke, but maybe he was speaking literally since those are their names 🤔

I eat found family and bonding combined with humour up, so ROTTMNT was really up my alley. I didn't really have any pre-conceived notions to cloud my judgment since I only watched the 2003 TMNT when I was, like, 9 or 10, maybe even younger. And it wasn't even my favourite cartoon at the time. It actually had the effect, that when I tried to watch 2012 TMNT after ROTTMNT I couldn't get past season 2, because I'd fallen so in love with the characters, writing and family and humour themes of ROTTMNT. I especially love that their team doesn't feel like "follow the leader" type of team, but instead more of a democracy where everyone's ideas are valid.
And Mikey was done really dirty in 2k12 and he is my favourite. He is often the heart of the group and even in rise he is often the most in touch with his feelings and helps his brothers express theirs. To have him be constantly belittled and mocked and have him just be the punchline is plain insulting.
I did still enjoy the 2003 cartoon when I re-watched it, it has good dialogue and Leo isn't just a piece of white bread like in 2012 and Raph isn't a mean asshole just for the sake of being a mean asshole.
I really hope we get a season 3 or even a season 4 at some point. ROTTMNT really deserves it, there's so much potential still left in it. I mean, greater miracles have happened, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed

Kevin Eastman, one of the creators of the TMNT comics, originally wanted to make April black. Her name even comes from is then wife. In fact if you look at the early versions of the mirage comics you can’t quite tell if April is white, black,or even mix. His partner, Peter Laird, wanted April to be Asian. As an ecology nerd I love the different species aspect of Rise, it’s makes them distinctive and ease to recognize but what I really like is how they utilize them being different species (for the most part) such as all are North American species of turtles. Also most of the time it’s only Mikey who can go into his shell which his species of turtle (the box turtle) can, the rest of the turtles species can’t and in most episodes they obey this rule, except in Lair Games which is witty enough that I can excuse if

I do want to add that, even as a person with only one sibling, splinter calling the turtles by their colours rather than names is relatable because my mom is super forgettful, and when I was younger I had paler hair she sometimes called me blondie, but whenever I mention "my mom forgets my name sometimes, haha" people seem to think its like, tragic? Like, dude, shes multilingual with memory issues, it's more of a quirk that is also a bit of a family joke. So I honestly think that the name thing at least is just normal.

Yes, I loved the remake when it came out, and the hate made no sense to me. I remember when the original 80s show came out and I criticized it for how much it changed from the original comics. I have no patience for for people complaining about canon between shows when they are all SO SO different from the source. But now I love each turtles adaptation, precisely because they are all so unique from each other. It’s like Scooby Doo, it’s fun to see the many many different ways people can reimagine these characters.

Actually there’s this deleted scene that was supposed The end of the movie- which would work to close the franchise and be closer ( and in that scene I’m pretty sure they addressed something about Leo being leader and feeling kind of hesitant to go on, but is then encouraged by Raph) and you see, they took out this scene because there might be a potential season three or at least more from the series- so they made the decision to not at the scene that would give closer. That means they themselves knew or at least have hope that the series might go on.

I like the point about Leo working his way up to be ready for leader. It makes sense that Raph would be leader for a while since he's the oldest and the biggest. This leaves room for character development for Leo. He matures throughout the series until Splinter sees him as ready to be leader, which happens at the end of the finale of s2.

As someone who watched 2012 Ninja Turtles as a little kid but was never a fanatic about it, I honestly love the Rise of TMNT series. I love how in this version how they put emphasis on the Turtles' personalities and not just their roles, the fact that they even show affection and say "I love you" makes them more relatable, and the animation is so fun to watch. I loved the movie and I also like how they didn't say the cliché lines "I know you're still in there" or "fight it" because those annoy me sometimes. I just wish in the movie that they played the full theme song maybe at the end credits because it's too catchy but it was probably cut for time, and Mikey should've gotten more character development within the series. I don't feel like the TMNT franchise should do that reboot Mutant Mayhem so quickly because I feel like there's still a lot to unpack about Rise, like Casey's arc since that guy still kind of sees the Turtles as some ideal heroic beings. Also, the reason why Donnie has trouble expressing how he feels is because he's canonically autistic.

I'm at work rn so I'm gonna come back and gush properly about how much I love this show when I'm done with my shift, but just know until then that this show is so overhated it's infuriating and easily my favorite version of TMNT (especially as a black TMNT fan).
Ok I'm back, and I'm so happy it was included how silly the 80s series was and how 2012 was also hated a lot when it first aired and while great, definitely isn't perfect. "Cowaboomers" seem to always forget those little details when bashing Rise's existence every other week. It's so funny yet sad how incapable older TMNT fans are of anything remotely new or lighthearted showing up in a franchise literally called "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", but after seeing the hate Rise got/still gets literally any time it's mentioned I'm not as surprised anymore. I'll try to keep this as brief as possible but as someone who was exposed to TMNT through the 2012 as a kid and became a huge fan of the franchise as a whole, from day 1 Rise has just been such a breath of fresh air in a 35+ year old franchise that's been imo more or less the same. Every new change Rise decided to make just made me love the show even more, to the point where it's honestly jarring seeing older versions again cause of how much I love this one. I love how beautiful this show is, I love seeing the turtles as different species, I love getting to see the turtles have fun and act like children for once like the teenagers they've supposedly always been without being traumatized every five seconds, I could keep going. Cassandra so badly deserved to get her proper arc and become besties with April and Sunita, god we were so robbed. Also as a black female TMNT fan, Rise April existing make me so so happy and is the first time I've ever felt represented in this franchise (currently thinking of being her for Halloween this year and it's gonna be so cool getting to be a character who looks like me from one of my favorite shows). The turtles as well having 2/4 be played by black VAs was also really cool to see, and like 98% of fandom just agreeing without having to say anything that any human versions of the turtles are black or blasian was something I didn't know I needed so badly after growing up and seeing them always portrayed as white guys.
I just... love Rise so much it hurts man. I'll never forgive Nick for not even giving such a lightning in a bottle show a better chance and not immediately treating it like garbage (we were supposed to get a Turtles Tots episode with Mikey having to take care of his now younger brothers for christs sake, I hate it here). Regardless, even though it took 4 years, I'm glad this lovely iteration is finally starting to get the recognition it deserves on a wider scale and people are starting to come around to it.

It would really break my heart if the movie marked the end of Rise. Nickelodeon is so obsessed with being stuck in their ways that they refuse to recognize a successful show when it’s right under their nose. They’re a company that is so afraid of rocking the boat, i.e. rebooting tired franchises like SpongeBob, TTG, Powerpuff Girls, etc, that the second that something breaks the tmnt mold, breathing new life into the franchise, they kill it before it can even reach the end of the planned story. So many shows on Nickelodeon far overstay their welcome, but shows like this are killed before they can blossom. I am all for sticking it to the man, continue to share an support ROTTMNT! Show them that they’re making a massive mistake. #saveROTTMNT

I do wish people like Mr. Enter didn't just blindly hate on Rise of TMNT simply because it's 'not dark and serious like the 2012 version.'
And while I also did find the initial reveal of Rise of TMNT to be rather... jarring in terms of contrast to the 2012 version (which is the version I grew up with), I eventually warmed up to Rise because while it was more comedic, it still kept the overall vibe of the series. It's like if the old school 80's version was done right.

I'm usually a hardcore Leo fan, at first just because he had the blue bandanna and swords, which a kid who loved swords and the color blue this was extremely appealing to me. But over time as I delved more and more into the series, checking out every incarnation, I started to realize that it really wasn't just the blue or swords that I loved about him, but how he was the one who always had to overcome the most challenges for his brothers all the while still having the be the most calm and rational one. Him overcoming these struggles have always been the highlights of the series for me, and has been a hero I look up to the most since childhood...
AND THEN RISE DONNIE JUST HAS TO COME ALONG AND BE THE GREATEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD!
