Atlanta United won MLS Cup Saturday night by defeating Portland Timbers 2-0 in front of an MLS record 73,019 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Josef Martinez was the match MVP after scoring a goal and adding an assist on Franco Escobar’s second-half goal.
In the 39th minute, Michael Parkhurst won the ball on a sliding tackle in Portland’s half. The ball ricocheted into the path of Martinez, who got by one Portland defender and the keeper for his fourth goal of the MLS Cup Playoffs, his 35th of the season.
Portland nearly equalized in the 43rd minute, after Sebastian Blanco got to the end line. He delivered a cross into the six-yard box, where Jeremy Ebobisse rose above the Atlanta defense, but Brad Guzan made a brilliant diving save to his right to keep Atlanta in the lead.
Atlanta doubled its lead in the 54th minute as Escobar got on the end of a Martinez flicked header at the back post and guided the ball past Attinella. Martinez was fouled to earn a free kick, which Miguel Almiron swung into the box. The Venezuelan striker rose in the box to win the header. Escobar gambled at the back post and delivered his second goal of the postseason to make it a 2-0 Atlanta lead.

I was at the match last night. I've been to matches in the US, England, Portugal, Italy, and Spain. I will put this match environment and energy with any of them. Not just inside the stadium, but outside in the cold rain, people were chanting, singing, dancing, lighting flares and fireworks, cooking, laughing. I love my Atlanta United.

I know I'm writing this like a year and a half later, but I came to watch this video for the memories. I remember the FOX Atlanta headlines showing ppl jumping in the governor's fountain after the match and flares in the cold hard rain. It meant a lot to us mainly because we hadn't won a major championship in 23 years and the Falcons did the unthinkable and lost the Superbowl in arguably the worst way possible. This meant so much to us.

I can only imagine what it was like live. Cuz, up here in New England on just a regular-sized basic flatscreen, the sound of the crowd was strikingly loud. Being in that ear-splitting cauldron must have eventually evolved into a truly surreal endeavor. That train horn is badass.

Portland Timbers fan here, Congrats Atlanta United, you deserve the trophy this year.
This is incredible not only for Atlanta but also for the southeastern United States. This region of the U.S. has not always welcomed football (or soccer). However, that is changing. And for the first time, a professional soccer team from south of the Mason-Dixon line and east of the Mississippi River has won a major soccer tournament. This was done with over 70,000 fans watching on multiple occasions in Atlanta! It makes me excited thinking about Nashville S.C. and other expansion teams being introduced to MLS in the near future.
Yes, there will be mistakes made along the way. However, this is a beautiful step forward in the right direction for the sport in the U.S.!!

Ik I'm writing this a year and a half later, but I came here for the memories. I remember how crazy Atlanta went after this. It was raining but we were outside partying with flares, ppl were jumping in the governor's fountain, it was all over the news. 1st major championship in 23 years and it pretty much got our minds of that terrible Falcons defeat in the Superbowl. I even remember the very next day, the Atlanta Falcons were posting about their upcoming day that game against the Packers and all the comments were about how Atlanta United won MLS Cup. This was also the 1st time I was alive and witnessed one of my teams winning a major league title. It's a day I'll never forget.
