    Have loved your videos for the past year. I have to go back further and catch the other ones
    I've been in a wheelchair after a car accident several years ago, but I've always been an audio/video enthusiast. I was 17yrs old when I was injured and about to possibly get drafted via baseball. It was devastating but my love for movies and tech kept me going. Here I am in my 50's and still loving home theater.
    I go back to the days when we had laserdiscs and Runco projectors were the high end projectors.
    I'm finally selling my Sony vpl55es front throw projector I've had for the last 5yrs . I have a 120 inch vutec screen and a Denon x4200w 4k Dolby Atmos AVR receiver powering my Klipsch premier 7.2.4 speakers. 4 are in the ceiling for the Atmos.
    I'm getting a 130 inch screen and I'm finally going laser after JVC came out with the NZ-7 . I'm going to keep my excellent Klipsch speakers and power them with the Marantz sr-8015 thanks to watching some of your videos. I was thinking about the new Epson LS 12000 laser but I've heard the black levels on the new JVC are finally there. I have an LGC1 77 OLED upstairs for the first time which I use for my gaming (Xbox series X) and I love the black levels.
    In the past, I had an Aunt who I got to buy a projector for her house and she loved her little home theater. Unfortunately, she succumbed to cancer this past January. She was a great Aunt and she left behind some money for me to even think about buying a true high end projector. I'm going to dedicate my theater to her. My girlfriend is creating a collage of all the movies my nieces and nephews enjoyed watching with her. We'll have some sort of poster with small sections of each movie.....
    I love how down to Earth you are and the amount of knowledge you have when it comes to the incredible equipment that's out now. There's never been a better time to be a home theater enthusiast!
    My room is only about 12x25 with 7 1/2 lowered ceiling but I'm doing the best I can as this will probably be my last hurrah. 😀😀😀😀
    I love your home theater tour and keep the great CZcams videos coming. What I'm trying to do is get one of the 6 terabyte kaleidescope systems at a discount. That would be incredible!!!
    I hope I'll have everything up and running by the end of April!!!!
    Nick

    Amen Brother! When we built our dedicated theater room, 2016 & no windows, with the 120" screen ... it totally changed our joy in watching movies. It's not a crazy expensive theater. Our projector was only the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 5030UB projector, about $2k. I thought I'd love the room but my wife completely puts me to shame... she is crazy about it. 😀

Tvs are great for sports,sitcoms,news, etc....but for me ,projectors are just hands down better for movies ! Sorry...

    In a small room, I repurposed a 6-foot closet to be the media center - removed the closet doors and put an 82-inch Samsung QLED TV ($1,000 from Costco) on a highboy TV stand inside the closet, and paired it with Yamaha YHT-4950U 5.1 surround system. Built a riser and home-made theater curtains, and painted the room dark grey, so the entire set-up was less than $3K, plus whatever theater seating you want to get. Fairly low-end for sure, but no in-wall or visible wiring. We like it.

  • @CharloBagis

    My room is narrow and has a lot of light, for that reason 3 years ago I got a 65" Panasonic Oled TV, the quality of the image is mind-blowing, I'm still amazed to this day. I don't know if getting a projector will do the job for me now, l hate going at the cinema now because the image looks inferior, there is no comparison when it comes to colours and black levels. Obviously that is just my 2 cents.

      Exactly. This is the way. If you have a living room with tons of windows and the sun is bright, you will be very annoyed by having to turn the blinds down to sit down and watch something during lunch time on a projector. Plus the image will be washed out which is annoying in itself.

  • @michaelbradley7595
    @michaelbradley7595 Před 2 lety +2

    It all depends on the size of the room. A 75" TV in a smaller room is ideal. Projectors are usually dimmer and do not deliver the contrast or sharpness of a large screen TV. The brightness often makes up for the size differential and give enough immersion. I sit 6-8ft away from my 75" and it is ideal for movies and sports. Sound is more important that most people think. A soundbar is only of use if you are desperate and have an obnoxiously controlling spouse. Even a good 2 channel system with decent size floor speakers is often preferred over the best soundbars. The illusion of multichannel sound bars is exactly that, a complete illusion.

    Currently, regardless of size, watching a TV still feels like watching a TV. But for some people in some situations that is enough. Having several large screen TV's and a projector in a dedicated theater, gives us the both of best worlds. If and when they can make TV's that have a (much) more cinematic feel then there will always be a projector in our house. And for those who say just sit closer to a large TV screen and it will give you the same experience I say no, no it won't.

    It all depends on how serious you are about home theater. Unless you have a dedicated room projectors are inconvenient.....but to some of us it is worth it. I currently have to deal with watching movies in a living room in an open house layout. I worked around it with getting some nice blackout drapes, mounting the projector to the ceiling in an area that wasn't a huge eye-sore, then installing an electric pulldown screen that divides off the room for when we watch movies. My only main gripe about my current setup is I have to keep my left channel tower speaker on sliders and move it across the room each time we want to watch a movie. It is a bit annoying, but hey at least I get to have a home theater setup in a house that isn't big enough for a dedicated room. Pros and cons, but to me it is worth it and our family loves watching movies together. I love my sound system as much as any other guy, but without that big immersive screen it's just not the same to me.

  • @donh.5097
    @donh.5097 Před 2 lety +9

    I’m in the same situation and I’m leaning more towards an 85 inch TV. Projectors in my price range can’t compete with TV picture quality especially in 4k hdr. And honestly even though it’s a dedicated room I don’t want be in the dark all the time to get a descent picture. Plus the fan noise was a bit distracting on the two ust projectors I tested.

    • @Youthman

  • @twoknife
    @twoknife Před rokem

    I am a point where both options make sense. I am mostly limited by room height at 230cm / 7 ft 6 inches. The maximum screen size I can reasonably fit is 120 inches. The whole house has automated blinds. So I can control the light and it mostly depends on paint/furniture color. I can get a TCL 98" QLED TV for about $5000. A UST plus screen or Epson LS12000 falls into the same category. My maximum possible width would be about 125-130 inches 16:9, but 120 would be better for sound.

  • @jr62inhometheater98
    @jr62inhometheater98 Před 2 lety +1

    I have a 17’x17’x9’ room. For years I built the audio side first while using a 65” LG OLED. It was a great picture but just not immersive enough. The other downside was all the movies had the distraction of black letter box bars. Now I have been able to move to a projector and a 130” 2.35:1 screen.
    During the day can be a challenge but with blackout blinds and curtains it’s a great picture. I zoom out the black bars now and it’s super immersive. So my pick is a projector and the biggest screen that can be managed.

    I have a 5.1.2 audio setup in a small room and an OLED TV, for me OLED are the way to go and i surely enjoy very much movies in HDR 10 and Dolby Vision, the higlights looks fantastic, the contrast of an OLED is unbeatable and you have true blacks. If i had my own house and money probably i would have build a home cinema with a good projector. The immersion is good with big projector screens thats why i like the idea of a projector.

    I have both the JVC NX7 w/anamorphic lens and Seymour AV 125" screen in a dedicated HT room then the 77" OLED for the normal living room. There's no comparing the experience. Sure the image quality is "better" on the OLED but the projector setup makes you feel like you're really THERE and is just more comfortable. If I was in front of a TV that was 125" my eyes would probably explode from the massive amount of light, where as projection just feels natural.

    Good take Youthman, I totally agree that a projector is best for MOVIES. TV is just TV. Also people should know that a projector takes a lot more work and study. You may have to paint, or DIY light and sound treatments, mounts and all kinds of stuff. A TV you can plug in and start rocking right away. But a projector performance requires your pride, craft and participation with the whole room to get the most out of it.

      @@Youthman Yeah, you can get the TCLs for $6-8k USD and they're 98", 4K 120Hz with HDMI 2.1. They're not the leading edge in TVs, but they definitely make for a good question. However, later in the video you mentioned going for 120" and even 150-200" to get that right level of immersion, and that zone is still a ways off for TVs. Maybe another 5 years and the price will be down into the $20,000s for a 150" MicroLED/MiniLED screen. That's also what I'm banking on, so in the medium term I bought one of those 98" TCLs.

    It's not the same - it's like asking should I buy a bike or a ca r - totally different purposes. A projector cannot do what a TV can do and vice versa. I always tell my family and friends, if you have a TV in a living room, go for a projector in the basement. But it doesn't make sense to buy a projector if you don't already have a TV. As you mentioned, projector are for movies and gaming and not to binge on Friends or watch the news.

The 83" OLED is hands down the best PQ display but then how close do you want to have to sit to get immersed? How about your LCR, can't match positioning like you can with a AT screen. Mask your screen for different aspect ratio content and your brain will forget about oled blacks.

    TVs are the king for overall colours, blacks, and brightness. For immersion you need a projector for that 100+ inch screen. You need a dedicated space though. If you have a big budget you can get projectors that are impressive compared to a high end tv. For the average person a tv is the way to go. It can gives you those bright colours, deep blacks, and can be used in a multitude of spots around the home. I would take the 98 inch Samsung tv over a projector any day. I appreciate peoples passion for the "cinematic experience" but for me I want the highest image quality over a larger screen. One thing to know and let people know is that there's no Dolby Vision on projectors. I just tell people by the biggest TV your money can't afford. You will never regret it after that. A lot of people think they want a projector and then they buy one. Then it turns out they're watching more Sports than movies. And for movies, you want to be completely compatible. Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos is a must for a home theater. I think an awesome home theater is where they have a giant TV for sports and movies. Then when they want the home theater they will just push a button and a screen will drop down in front of the TV. That's what I'm working on right now.

    Yea, I will be waiting for a locally dimmed projector if that is ever even possible, or needed. For I haven’t used a projector in the last 5 years, I mean I had one, before building a home theater was even a focus for myself. I mean I used to have a projector and a motorized screen, down in my basement of my old house, but that was mainly for playing games like Rock Band, where I wanted a big screen, so everyone could see their notes… but that was back when Rock Band was popular, I mean I still play it occasionally, but it’s not at all at the frequency I used to, though it will really depend on when I can get my drums connected back to my Xbox, and try to drum, again. For it has been a while, for example I haven’t been able to use the auto kick feature, that I think was brought either with Rock Band 4 or Rock Band rivals, or I should say I haven’t played it very often, since I was then in college, and then after college of course, my life became hectic looking for work, and I really didn’t feel like walking down to the basement very often. Though now, I have an elevator to get myself and my scooter down stairs, where I am hoping to finish installing my home theater, within the next couple of weeks… though it won’t be finished until I can buy a receiver with enough outputs, and having the full hdmi 2.1 features, where I am also now waiting for a projector that can handle hdr, and in particular Dolby vision.

    Projectors have their place for sure, what do you think projectors will be like 10 years down the road, will they be able to compete with 140in micro LED TVs when they become far more affordable

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 2 lety

      No one can predict what the future holds. In 10 years, there might be something better than micro LED's, same could be said for Laser Projectors. Time will tell.

    I have a Hisense 100 inch ust projector and it's great. But my 85 inch wall-mounted TCL is hard to beat for picture quality. Here in Australia you can get a Hisense and TCL 100" TV for about $8000. I saw one in a department store but I reckon it would be too heavy to wall mount.

      I game on my 150" projection. It's incredible! Just keep in mind you do have to replace the bulb on a projector after 3,000 hours unless you have a laser projector which will give you 20,000 hours.

    heh!.. sony's hundred inch TVs are gonna run you far less than putting in a worthwhile projector and screen, run wiring to it and so on, seriously less! i'm not doggin projectors at all, but you are always gonna have a better picture with a TV, there is no projector that can match the contrast and blacks of near any TV! but if size is the issue, especially in a larger room, i get totally understand that need for immersion, and untill micro LED becomes even partially viable as a soloution, it stands to reason that a projector and screen could provide an immersive experience, which is, afterall, what we are all striving for.

    • @Youthman
      @Youthman  Před 2 lety +1

      I agree that TV’s can provide a superior PQ over projectors. With that said, there are many projectors that can produce a gorgeous image with slightly less black level. I think it will be many years before Sony’s 100” will be affordable. The X92 is $17,000.

      Not sure where your guesstimation comes from but value for money-wise… something like a native 4K Sony projector like VPL VW325ES at roughly $5K, will deliver plenty more wow power than the 100” TV at 20K. All you need to add is a screen! Still best value until big ass TV screen cost goes down. My guess, at least 3 or 4 years minimum!

      oh cool! well i wasn't aware native 4k had become so affordable, especially with any real contrast and black levels?.. but either way screens cost how much? a cable that can relay that kind of bandwidth across a room is how much?.. i'm just saying your bound to be pushin the same price point when alls said n' done.. and there is SO much to be said for the immersion experience, i totallly get that, aand whilest, yes, big ol' TV's like the 100 inchers from sony are not that super great yet, and i stress yet, it won't be long untill the mini-LED backlit QD LCD type panels are in those sizes, yeah they're like 93 inches already, and OLED is not far behind! and no projector will ever trump OLED.. but i do like a lot of the things one can do with projectors and screens.. having the sound come from the screen due to having speakers behind it.. the far larger sizes, only matched by micro LED thusfar, and oh hell's to the yes would one a those be an amazing addition to the man cave! and again that true theater type immersion.. don't know.. i like my TVs, and certainly would consider a projector setup, so again no knockin it at all.. guess i just like my TV.. for now.. lol, but hey i totally see and understand the projector thing, i owned one once, a ben q, and i loved it! no better way to play halo, lol, and i do hope DLP catches up in resoloution soon! nothing i've seen in projectors compares to DLP! especially with a laser backlight i imagine!
