Well, now you could talk about the downsides of hydro power : the irreversible destruction of rivers and territories which impact the people living there. The fauna and flora of these environments are changed forever and fish species disappear because of that. The atlantic salmon is a great example of the impact of the dams. Water isn’t as renewable as it seems and the best spots have been already used. I live in Quebec and I visited most of the major accessible hydro stations beginning at only 5 years old. Beauharnois, manic 5, lachine, shawinigan, la romaine. They are awesome feats of engineering but they also have a deep impact on our territory.
Niagara falls is #8? What! Those other dams must be massive to have more head and flow going through there than the mast voluminous waterfall in the world!
We have so many unpowered dams near me in Ontario. I think the Nuclear industry is against powering the dams and running the appropriate wires to transmit the energy back. Since the dams are there, I think we ought to power them up, It is good baseload power.

Well said. However arguably the positive outweigh the negatives. But I agree with you on the downside.

Thanks for mentioning this. I was wondering if the unpowered dams has to do with grid and distribution issues. Perhaps the grid is overloaded?
