I would've wanted Potter as my boss. He will support you, he will guide you when you need it. However, if you screw up, he's going to lay it into you. He says what needs to be said, good or bad, and that's what I always hope for from a good boss.

Nothing against Henry Blake, but I loved Col. Potter so much. He was like the classic country doctor who cared about everyone whether as a patient or just a good friend. The world needs people like him.
I was 10 years old when MASH debuted, one of the best shows growing up, now 60 yrs old and still enjoy the show on MeTv
I was in my pre-teen years when this came on. I would every week sit with my dad & watch every episode! It made me sad when it ended.
Fast forward today (now 63) & still will watch reruns on MeTv when I can but hubby bought me years ago the best DVD set made for MASH (Martini & medicine package set) so when it finally is not reruns, I'll have my own viewing every day!
He was the Boss/Father of the 4077. I loved him. RIP Harry Morgan
I loved him in this role. Strong with lots of compassion. It still makes me sad when it ended, and it was a long time ago. No one call me at 7 PM cause I'm watching 2 episodes from 7 to 8. It was one of the best ever done. Amen for the re-runs.

Col. Sherman Tecumseh Potter. The man who garnered enough respect that the two most UNmilitary doctors in the 4077th (Pierce and Hunnicutt), saluted him before he left for the orphanage.
Col. Potter ran a very tight ship on the base, all awhile showing he's human, too!!!

MASH was great at bringing in new characters who added something distinct to the roles they were replacing. BJ filled the role of Hawkeye’s partner-in-crime and confidant but was also a more mature family man who was better suited for the more serious tone the show took on in the latter seasons. Winchester replaced Frank Burns as the antagonist to his Swamp mates but unlike Burns, Winchester was highly intelligent and a skilled surgeon- he was a more challenging foil that couldn’t be easily dismissed or made a fool of. The “regular army” Colonel Potter was much more of an authority figure than the lovable but goofy Lt. Col Blake, but he also knew he was in command of draftee doctors who didn’t need spit-and-polish discipline as long as they the did their jobs well.
I'm glad they didn't bring in someone new when Radar left. Klinger just took over.MASH went on for a little too long, yet the farewell movie was amazing!
I loved Henry Blake, but Sherman T. was even better! And that's not even counting General Bartford Hamilton Steele! (Three E's, not all in a row!!)
They were both quite phenomenal commanders to the camp in very individual ways!

In real life, what a fabulous man!
CBS really had a true gem with MASH.The whole 6pm-12:35am on MeTV is all CBS shows.
Another reason why I love MASH....Potter. He's tough, but a hoot!

This has to be a tough video to make. Trying to get all the best lines of Colonel Potter in one place is a challenging job in itself.That's why I say THANK YOU to the person who made it.
The reason why AfterMASH stunk was because they took all the snarl out of Potter. They turned him into a amiable old man. He was great when he was blowing his stack at the motley group of goofballs at the 4077, or the cutting remarks, delivered in a no nonsense tone. He was gruff, wise, and loveable. For example : A Night at Rosie's. "I came over here to see where my camp went".
My favorite Potter scene is when he rejects Winchester's vociferous demand for a transfer, while Winchester is posing for Potter's portrait. "Don't change the color of your face, I'm out of umber!" Then he tells Winchester he's not going anywhere, and hands him the hilarious finished product. Classic.
Such a great character
There are three things in this movie that makes it so great: horses, cowboys, and horses!

The one that really got me was a zoned-out Potter putting a shoe to his ear while the Get Smart theme plays (at 1:30), for anyone who gets the reference. :D
My favourite scene is when Potter is thinking of leaving and Hawkeye says;”Colonel. Sherman. Please stay.” Potter looks for a moment like he’s going to break Pierce for being too familiar, but accepts the familiarity in the spirit of the moment 😀
Both colonel Blake and colonel Potter were awesome in their own way. And both were good leaders tbh.
Blake didn't deserve to die, but at least we got our man Potter to replace him and run 4077!

Harry Morgan was special. Even though i was sad to see LTC Henry Blake character leave the show, Morgan was terrific. Nobody could have played COL Sherman T. Potter as well.
I agree 100%. Harry Morgan was terrific as Col. Potter. He also did well on Dragnet (color episodes) as Officer Bill Gannon.
Reminded he also played a single episode 1-2 seasons before col. Potter - he was a batty officer that almost court-martialed Hawkeye for insubordination. (Except he asked the black chopper pilot to sing a song - slave song)

I preferred Col Potter over LTC Blake any day of the week. There was so much character depth wth Col Potter. I would have luved for his character to get his own show when he was in WW 1 and WW II. I also enjoyed that of all the awards Col Potter had, he held his Good Conduct Medal over his other awards.
Here's my colonel Potter "connection". In an episode, he says he was in boot camp at "camp Grant". I live on the grounds of the old camp grant. Nations largest recruit intake ctr located in Rockford illinois. Yeah yeah...cool story bro, I know.
