    I skin the head out and I put my skulls in a molasses tub with a lid filled with water for 1 month horn and all, then drain the water rinse the skull to get anything out that you can that’s hanging off and repeat another month. Rinse the skull off with water and squirt a little dawn on it at the same time. Next I stick it in the rafters of the barn and let it air dry for a week or two or at lease until the smell is completely gone. I like the way they come out they are fairly white with the slightest off shade to it but can whiten it with bleach if you want I never have, but I have realized that this does not make the skull bones as brittle as boiling. I would recommend a car air freshener under your nose or cigarette butts while rinsing the bucket out after the first month.

    The Dominator and CC/Seth are top notch and they are heaven to sleep in. Have the Burro and it will be tried out with the Skousen brothers in wet POW in the spring :). Already my favorite duffle out there.

    I was unaware of the rules about transporting heads with brain and skull material attached. Good to know, but that Bridger Boiler is pricey. I seldom leave Colorado for hunts. Have gone to Texas and Wyoming, though. I usually hunt pronghorn does in WY. ...so no heads come home. Shot an aoudad in TX and had a guy there do my euro mount. My local taxidermist only charges $100 to do euros, so I usually just support him. I live in a condo, so I can’t boil heads in the yard...too offensive for the neighbors. I am a painting contractor so I own a pressure washer, but it is powerful enough to disintegrate a skull. Good information! Thanks for the content.

      Ya, $100 bucks ain’t bad. I’d do the same if I didn’t live in a house.

  • @jsnyder775
    @jsnyder775 Před 3 lety

    You didn't thro up a pic of Lamper's truck 🤣 Great content! Everyone should try doing there own skulls. It is really not hard and there is plenty of info at CZcams University. If you let it soak in water for a week or two (covered because of the smell) then simmer with Dawn for bit almost all of the stuff falls right off then just hit it with the garden hose sprayer if you don't have a pressure washer. Hopefully the film permits will be going away soon after the ruling from the district judge.

    Here's a pro tip for the bleach process. Use Vol 40 like Brian said but use the creme and the powder and make it about like applesauce consistency brush it on then use a heat lamp or a halogen bulb and bake it on. 2-3 hours and comes out blistering white one application. Great video as always guys.

  • @benandmarinabedford7523

    If you want that bear skull to turn out beautiful white like your deer as well as turn the hard to brush inside pieces white try this technique. Liquid hydrogen peroxide (desired 6% by volume with water added) bring it to a simmer with animal head in it and then turn off the heat let sit 1-2 hrs. Then re bring mixture to a boil with head out and put head in for one minute. Rinse of peroxide and good to go. Beautiful white it might even help with the beetle odour but not sure about that. It will turn the teeth white though so you do lose that contrast but it’s a brilliant bone white so also neat. I buy the liquid hydrogen peroxide at a hydroponics store and get super concentrated solution 29% and then dilute to 6% with water.
    As always really enjoy your content and looking forward to more hunts! Can’t wait for the spring bear hunting in BC. You’ve definitely inspired me with pursuing bow hunting spot and stalk and I can’t get enough.
    Stay Gritty, Ben

    Hey Brian for the bear skull, if you use a croc pot for your simmering to get the meat off it takes about a day. Once it’s clean I simmer it again with Dawn dish soap. It really cuts the grease from the bone. The smell you talked about is grease left on it since they have so much fat. Works like a champ for my skulls! Great vid as always, keep it up and thank you. Look forward to latest film drops.

    Awesome! I wanted to DIY my bear skull before someone stole it out of my dads freezer 😔 had it there for a year and it “disappeared” anyway if I can get another I’m going for it this time! Do you also handle the pelt your self? Be cool to get a diy for that also!

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  Před 3 lety +1

      I just pay to have the hides tanned. It’s way too much work to do that myself. Getting a life-size mount on a bear. Some things are better done by a professional. 😄

  • @wespeterson2020
    @wespeterson2020 Před 3 lety

    Degreasing is the longest process. Typically bears take months to properly degrease. Fastest way would be acetone soak.
    skulls will never yellow overtime. Yellowing is grease

    When pressure washing skulls, how do you hold/secure them so they don't move and roll all over the driveway or yard?

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  Před 3 lety

      Generally, it doesn’t move around much. But if it does, I gently step on it with my rubber boots. Honestly, I haven’t even noticed it moving around much.

    Have you ever tried bearing your skills in the ground for a amount of time. Then digging them up and power washing them?

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  Před 3 lety

      Too much effort. Simmering for a day and then pressure washing is too easy and clean.

    Bear skulls are always more oily then anything else that’s why it’s has a yellow tinge, soak it in acetone for a month or so and it will pull the oil out

    Brian check out whitebone creation on CZcams. His prosses is not much different from what you do now and goes a bit faster. I've done skulls in about two to three hours total hands on time and drying overnight. They come out nice and white with not a lot of effort or cost.

    Brian the first 8 minutes of the show are promoting gear! Love it at times but sometimes I find my self fast forwarding . . . . I really like your pop up adds on the hunts but sometimes your talking and yea just being kinda car sales man. Please don’t take this offensive.

    • @GrittyGearAndPodcast
      @GrittyGearAndPodcast  Před 3 lety

      No worries Justin. I get it. I expect folks to fast forward who aren’t interested in the promos. Our partners are good people and they help us keep the lights on. I prefer the pop-up ads too. But 90% of our podcast audience only listens to the show. I’ll try to keep the promos short. 👍🏼👍🏼
