Today I am making a leatherbound spellbook, journal, tome, whatever you want to call it. Here I am using the sewing method that uses cords in the spine to create the awesome looking ridges on the back. The leather is vegetable tanned goatskin, tooled and stained. And of course I had to add some LEDs to the 3D print that decorates the front: Geralt's Medallion! Because this epic tome was inspired by the new series The Witcher, and the game "The Wild Hunt".
All links below marked with * at the front are affiliation links that helps us out and supports the channel. Thanks!

I do leather working, and you are correct. Shape and carve, then stain/dye the leather. If you stained then carved you would get un-dyed leather showing in the lines of the carving. As well, since you need to wet the leather for carving, you would also get colour bleeding.

this is what i think you can do, attach the leather to the spine and then, use the book to mark all you need to know where all is going to be placed, next, open the leather to one side, work on it (carving, tooling...etc), change the side and repeat, last dye the leather as you want and then glue. I am a leather artisan, that is most likely how i would do it.
Sorry if my grammar is not good, i am spanish but i did my best to comment this because i like the things you make and want to help you a little with the leather part.

Wow. I haven't looked at any of your bookbuilding projects until now. It brought up memories of Print Shop class in High School in the 1960s (yes, I'm old). Have you looked into "marbling" the edges of your books' pages? It's really easy and looks so cool.
    Beautiful job.
I have a suggestion for your "I don't have three hands" problem. You can buy "third hand" tools, alligator clips on little jointed stands to hold components for soldering but they're rally only good for that one thing.
You can also buy surgical instruments like hemostats and Kelly clamps- they're like fine-duty locking pliers (one has smooth jaws, the other has really fine teeth) and they come in different sizes. You clamp the part to be soldered in one of them and another to the first one to hold it up off your work surface. You can use them for lots and lots of things- they are seriously indispensable for craft work.

you CAN stain first and then carve ... BUT you will get uneven colouring in the carved portions ... and can get very heavy darker colouring in the compressed areas ... The carving after does make for a nice contrast to the stain ... and is a good highlight for very dark coloured books ...
    .
also ... if you carve after and are applying a fill like gold leaf or silk thread paired with gold and silver threads ... then the fill will cover any miscolouring pretty well ... if you DONT fill in the carved area you can use a q tip or similar applicator (brush) ... and add a light touch of the stain to the carved portions that are showing that you dont want to show ...
    .
think of it like this ... the people who carve pumpkins and use different thicknesses of the actual pumpkin to allow or block more or less light through them ... it is the same idea except the light comes from outside not inside ... so you tend to remove the dark to make the light ... instead of keeping the dark to block the light

So, as someone who works with leather, I can tell you that you can indeed dye the leather first then carve/stamp; in fact, you can use the moisture from the dye in place of water to case your leather in preparation for carving/stamping. In the case of carving, your most likely going to have to go over any carved details with a bit of dye just to touch up afterwards. It really just depends on what order of steps you feel most comfortable with and if tooling and dyeing the leather after its on the book is what works best for you then stick with it.

shape and carve/stamp/work/emboss, then stain and wax. Never work the leather after staining and waxing it. Guessing someone has probably said that.
As for working the leather seperate from the book, yes it most definately can be done, if you are carving or embossing a complex series of designs then working the leather seperately may well actually end up easier in the long run. It does however require very precise measurement, and some shaping you may want to do before you begin the rest of the work, like the spine banding, and making sure you have the leather all nicely skived out prior to beginning so you know it is all sized correctly. Different binders do things slightly differently though.
Working the leather off the book really becomes essential if you are using a lot of embossing tools, presses or dies that may put pressure on or potentially damage your boards and *ESPECIALLY* your spine. Boards are relatively easy to replace if they are damaged but if you damage the spine then you pretty much wreck the book.
Any finishing though is done once the book has been bound, so any gold (or other metal) leafing, that sort of thing, waxing can be left till after the bind is done as well, I prefer to stain off the book, mostly because when it comes to staining I tend to be on the messy side :).
Interested to know if you have moved onto Kettle knots for sewing though? Not watched many of your vids yet save this and a couple of your earlier books, and in the latter you were using a double knot. Not an issue with the number of folios you were using in those projects but Kettle knots lie flatter so are better used in projects with larger numbers of folios or thinner paper weights.

Hey Martina, Hansi, I have 2 questions and 2 suggestions.
    Questions:
    1) Can I base 2 OCs (Original Characters) off of the 2 of you?
    2) If so what do you want them to be? I was thinking you, Martina be a elf, witch hybrid or something like that. Hansi could be a human with clear sight that let's him see the supernatural clearly.
    Suggestions:
I noticed you don't upload as often anymore. I'm not sure why but I thought it might be having no ideas.
So here's my 1st suggestion: Look back at your past projects. You've made multiple designs for each project. Yet you only make 1 of them and never revisit the project to make another. So you could go back and make another design. You could make new designs too. You've learned a lot since most of your projects. So maybe go back and do another with the new skills you've learned. Your magic wand and magic staff for example.
Here's my 2nd suggestion: Mix the things you've done. I've never seen you make a figure for your Dioramas. You've printed or bought them. I understand they're small so many make their tools or something. Like a magic staff or large shield from resin or something. Or maybe make a magical Diorama that has a figure trapped or sealed in a resin crystal. Or make a set. A Diorama, a painting, and maybe tools. Tools: Weapons, armor, jewelry, clothes, and a book. Life sized armor for a male, a female, and maybe a pet. Same with weapons, jewelry, and clothes. An the book could have info about creatures or something. An I don't mean just make the book. I mean draw and write the information. Make a world of your own..

While you can dye the leather before tooling it, it makes more sense to do it afterwards, considering the carving knife will split the leather showing the natural skin of the leather which may not be dyed, since dye only sinks in so deep into the skin. So if you did it beforehand, you would have to fix certain spots afterwards.

Typically yes, you do generally dye your leather after you carve it. But it is possible to do it in reverse, as you have shown, you just need to add a little more dye after the carving and before additional embellishments like gold leaf.

I think I will go check out "World Anvil". For many years, I have needed and wanted to build "A Better World" (or at least part of one)
Part of my alternate "world", I did achieve in Thought and artifacts and I am still pecking away at it. I really should avail myself of your bookbinding course.

I noticed when you use leds, you connect them directly to the battery. This will draw excessive amount of current from the battery which will drain the battery and shorten the lifetime of the leds. See leds are current driven not voltage driven and so what matters to the leds is how much current it receives. To do this you just need a resistor connected from the battery to the leds. You could use a 12v battery or a 3.3v battery - as long as you calculate the correct resistor needed your leds will have a good 20k hours of lifetime and you could even calculate how long the battery would last! You will need the formula R = V/I (where R is the value you need to find out) (V is the voltage of the battery) and (I is the current that you want to feed the leds).
Now voltage is easy you just read the voltage from the battery, and if you need more voltage you just put 2 batteries in series. Current is in Amps and leds need milli Amps (divide by 1000). See normally red/green/yellow leds need from 5mA to 20mA (0.005A to 0.02A). Blue leds could even take 25mA (0.025A) or even more (check the specs when you but them).
For example: say you have a 3.3V battery and a red led which might be bright enough with 12mA ... so you need to work out 3.3 / 0.012 = 275. Now you won't find exactly that value but anything close is good. In fact you could work it out the other way around once you find the value using I = V / R
As for the battery, as an example a CR2032 is 3V and has around 235mAH (ie: can give you 235mA for 1H) or around 18hours @ 12mA of continuous power. 18hours trying to be a bit more conservative due to heat loss and whatnot. Just a rough idea anyways.
You must also take into consideration if you connect leds in series or in parallel.... in series the voltage on leds is split while in parallel the current is split. So if you connect leds in parallel and calculate the resistor for 12mA you will be really giving 6mA on each (assuming you have 2 leds)
Hope its not too complex and keep it up! :)

I’ve worked with leather for many years @knockoutleatherspdx and it’s fine that you’re tooling it after. The leather that covers the pommel of western saddles isn’t tooled until it’s been attached to the saddle because the stretching would ruin the tooling if done first. And you are correct about the dying. It’s done after tooling.
Hint: you can case (wet your leather) more when tooling and stretching. It won’t hurt it and don’t worry if you feel you’ve over cased it, just take a break and let it dry to your liking. Also if you don’t know how to use a resist try using a bit of fine sand paper after staining to highlight your work. 😉

I'm not a book binder but I have done a few over the last few years. I've also found it nearly impossible to line everything up if you pre cut. I tend to leave about a 1 inch (is hem the right word?) to trim off later. I do dye it first, in a bath solution so it soaks thru. If I work it too hard after the fact and the color gets off it's easy enough to touch up. Also helps that I tend to use already thin upholstery leather, like for car seats, and then an orbital sander to thin it even more on the edges. Again, I'm not anywhere near a professional, just my method that seems to make life a little easier for me. Your results may vary.
