Crystal was my Linguistics lecturer at Bangor in the late 80s. All his lectures were this entertaining, passionate, and informative. A great privilege!
Saw this in class at university last week and loved it. Brilliant conceptual comprehension of the English language statically/in a modern setting, in addition to its evolution as a communicative medium. Plus; Professor Crystal is a riot. (With a great surname to go with his personality. ;))
Professor Crystal is always down to earth..... He is a genius, brilliant & an intelligent Professor in Linguistics Studies. I always look up to him. All his videos are so useful for my study in applied english linguistics. I wish I could meet him someday.....
Language is dynamic. We resist change, but history will show us the right perspective. We might often feel like language is deteriorating, but that is just the way language works. You'd be shocked to know that many English words which seem very much part of the normal lexicon, like the word 'celebrate' for example, were thought of being uncouth and improper by people a few centuries back.
My dad uses far more abbreviations than me. Abbreviations are useful to text in a more conversational way, but also reflective of typing skill. A faster typist, is going to type more completely and eloquently, but also is going to use the medium more.
Honestly, whether it's good or bad for the language is irrelevant. It's where we're going. Texting and online communication are going to affect the way we communicate and that's okay. Languages evolve. Just because our language might be different than it was before cell phones, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it.
0:19 What does David come over as while introducing himself to the audience? 1:12 The prof treats the myths about texting... 2:16 What's there during texting to David's mind? 5:04 As the prof sees it, texting... 6:20 What would be socially unacceptable at school according to students? 7:31 The presenter argues texting... 10:27 What's the black panellist dying to do in the end?
funny enough that autocomplete was not mentioned )) with all my respect to this utterly smart man - I'd rather disagree as I tend to believe the texting does harm spelling skills. But again - who on Earth am I to judge?...
David Crystal was very, very humble about his credentials.
I like how David is so passionate about his theory, great job !!!!!

I love how Crystal speaks his mind. I'm here for school work, and I'm enjoying it!
I don't like the presenters! They seem like they're making fun of him a bit too much, but David Crystal was nice in this.

I'm Gen Z and I text in full sentences more than my parents do. I guess I'm better at phone-typing.

This episode aired in 2009 so I'm not sure autocomplete/correct was as widely used as it is nowadays.
I think autocomplete might actually help because it's repeatedly showing you the correct version of the word
This show was too good. not dumb enough to be on TV for another season
I thought he would be a boomer about it
When the guest became more educated than the presenter , we have such stupidity
the presenters are so mean lol
The balding man in the middle on the left side reminds me of Ali G.
