This is the first time I noticed Howell wearing sunglasses in “The Sound Of Quacking.” I don’t recall ever seeing any of the men wearing sunglasses in any of the episodes.
Actually, in the episode with the gold, he was the only one who didn't bring some on board the raft, so it was everyone else who botched that rescue attempt.
The sad fact is that once the network realized it had a hit show, they instructed their writers to keep the castaways stranded on the island. Otherwise the sponsors would withdraw and the money would dry up. Really sad that Gilligan, the Skipper, the Professor, the Howells, Ginger and Mary Anne were prisoners of corporate greed.
That was episode 9 "The Big Gold Strike" when Gilligan & Mr. Howell accidentally stumble onto an underground gold mine. Of course Mr. Howell wants to keep it their secret along with Mrs. Howell - and he refuses to share the gold among the rest of the castaways, despite there being a mutual agreement among all to share the island's resources equally. It also was the only time they operated on a monetary system of sorts (when the others fight back against the Howells & start charging them for their necessities: food, candles without wicks, etc. & they later all charge each other for stuff). Earlier in the episode the girls had managed to fish the Minnow's rubber lift raft out of the lagoon, which the men fix - the Skipper & Professor deem it only strong enough to carry the castaways & 1 item of provisions each. Soon after casting off the raft sinks faster than the Titanic did; after they return to shore the castaways except Gilligan sheepishly fess up to trying to smuggle one bag of gold home with them each! Actually the Skipper took them all on the honor system taking their word as to what they were bringing on board without searching it: Mr. Howell - golf clubs; Mrs. Howell - handmade handbag; Ginger - a diary of all their activities to make a movie out of; Professor - botanical specimens; Mary Ann - case of homemade guava jelly; it's a mystery as how Skipper was disguising his bag of gold. Good episode telling with humor the perils of greed.
This show was great for the 60’s generation and maybe the 70’s and 80’s, but I wonder if a modernized version of the show would be successful? I would doubt it since the modern times is so far from being simple and idealistic. However, it would be fun to see which actors would be selected for each castaway.
The show should have never been cancelled so soon, it was cancelled only because the Studio President's wife liked Gunsmoke which had been cancelled, but she wanted it back on the air, so in order to have room on the schedule, they cancelled Gilligan's Island. Gunsmoke would run another 8 years, until 1975.

Well it's pretty obvious what was going on that island with the professor and the skipper having no interest in the women obviously gay that left only Gilligan for the women to have their ways with. Who wouldn't sabotage a rescue attempt when you got Marianne and Ginger.
Actually in a later season there was an episode "Gilligan Goes Gung-Ho" where it was decided they needed to have some law & order on the island, wherein the Skipper was named as sheriff & Gilligan as his deputy. One day when the Skipper was away (I think to help the Professor find some items needed to make a signal fire so they could signal a plane predicted to go by) leaving Gilligan in charge. Gilligan subsequently goes overboard with law enforcement and becomes overzealous, placing in jail everyone - including the Skipper - for even some petty offenses. As a result the plane hoped to rescue them goes by since Gilligan incarcerated them all before the signal fire was built. Therefore, at the tail end of the episode, the Skipper locks Gilligan in jail for violating the latest provision of the criminal law: causing a rescue to be fouled up.

This show was originally broadcast when my parents were children. I love this show. Such a funny, and innocent comedy gem.
I watched reruns of season 2 and 3 for my whole childhood, but season 1 was rarely played.
Gilligan had to be the scape goat to keep them all on the island so we could all enjoy this show for at least three seasons.
I know. I always felt so bad for him, but if they got rescued, then it was the end of the show.

It’s hard to decide which Gilligan blunder is the most annoying, but X Marks the Spot is over the edge.
The best blunder is when he accidentally lit the raft on fire which signaled the Helicopter to rescue them.

It's hard to believe just what kind of dumb animal Willie Gilligan was. This definitely makes him totally the opposite/reversed of Davy Jones.
Still prefer season 1; funnier episodes.
