"Our ancestors did everything with nothing, today we do nothing with everything"
I agree
Feel like we still do amazing things, but we just aren’t impressed anymore.
So true
Oh stop 🙄
True
Dutch person here. Was expecting funny story from an old sea hand in not great English.... then comes a lecture on "laminary flow"... LOL, i love this guy.
That guy is not only wise, but also stylish, with his impeccable peacoat and red scarf.
Anyone else notice the phosphorescent painted rings on the sides of the companionway ladder on that boat. A nice safety touch so you can get up and down in the dark. Reminds me of being the DCPO (Damage Control Petty Officer) for my division on my USN destroyer, where we would use that to mark certain things, like fire stations, CO2 bottles, etc. so we could see them if we lost ship's electricity.
I've always liked pickled herring, but on occasion and in smaller quantities. The stuff I've had is white and dense, and has a nice texture.
"Let's not look at that anymore" is exactly what I say every time I go into my boat's electronics panel. 🤣
That will bite you in your ass one day :)
Man the captain of the ship was awesome, just a technology they use back then it’s just amazing even to the wind foils they use now on the back of ships. What a treasure to find that guy.
The woman serving the herring was stunning and definitely needs to be introduced.
Love the characters and that you take time to share their stories.
23:41 come for the sailing stay for the soundtrack. Just terrific Sam.
"They've got really good cheese here..." Those eyes. Lol. Cafes are the best.
Beautiful video Sam. The Dutch Captain was very eloquent and friendly.
I like how some Dutch people literally translate sentences into English. When the dutch skipper was explaining the English rudder system: "do you see it (be)fore you?"(as in: 'in front of you'), Coming from: "zie je het voor je?", properly translated: "can you picture it?" 😄. I do love my little country
En voor de rest qua terminologie echt foutloos engels, is het mooie. Gaat ie ff uitleggen over laminary flow en dat het foils zijn en zo... mooie poema, deze man. Heeft er verstand van.
That backdrop of Centraal Station took me back to the time we visited there. WOW!!! I just realixed, that was FIFTY years ago. My, how the time flies when you're havin' fun. ;-)
Me and my hubby have just started watching you Sam - he is building a catamaran atm. Sven gave us a real boost as he is 83 and having another adventure- we are in our 60s so good to find others with like mindset - keep up the vids 😊❤ we live in Queensland Australia
Congrats on 200K subs Sam! Your channel and you are most deserving.
Oh man, I love Dutch Maatjesharing. I buy a giant bucket when they're sold in my area, and it lasts all year. You're supposed to grasp them by the tail and tip your head back like a seal when eating them. 🤣
Thanks Sam for another great video. Looking forward to your Florida adventures.
Your songs are just the best my friend.
live it up man! keep the adventure alive!
I don't know whether to celebrate or be sad - seems it's been several episodes since Sam drilled a hole in his boat. I reckon that's a good thing, though.
I drilled 8 holes in my new boat yesterday
@@samholmessailing The angels must be singing!!
@@samholmessailing -New Boat?
There’s a hole in the bottom of the sea that Sam drilled.
@@theapplguy free catamaran he says at the end of the video
Absolutely brilliant video, Sam. Fascinating history of 100 yr old maritime technology and engineering. Pure edutainmemt. Be well and stay safe. 🙏
I could see that weather system behind you at the start of the episode and thought, your going to get a dunking! Most of the mills were used to pump water out of the land before electric pumps were available. Love Holland, nicest people in Europe.
wow what a cool old boat, amazing that it's still in use in been so well maintained
That was a good one, history and inside a Dutch windmill!
Great video as alway, Sam. Have a good rest Pickle!
17:51 So you found a coffeeshop lol!
very cool sailing barge and captain. the winches, hull design...very very cool.
Thanks Sam. I will miss the pickled herring vids again this winter.
Have a good winter Sam.
Rijks Museum for that beautiful old ship was my favorite.
Enjoyed all of it also with the captain & boat tour. Looking forward to Florida sounds interesting.
I loved the 'Pickled Herring' stickers!
I just jumped back on to your channel after a long break Sam. I have really enjoyed catching up on the last couple of months clips. Thanks for sharing!
Another great Sam Holmes video update. Really cool boats in Amsterdam. Congratulations on 200k subscribers. Well earned. Thanks for sharing.
Wow a real windmill, so cool, they have wind based water pumpers as well. Really cool old clipper, kinda sad to be leaving pickled herring for the winter. Nice to see Annalina(sp?) again, would be nice to see her make a trip to Florida/Bahamas to escape the North Atlantic winter gales! It gets kinda chilly in the long cold dark nights of winter, then again there are the winter fires and nights in the pubs and bars ;-) Perhaps one year you could winter over and hit the Alps for skiing and winter flying, looks fun to fly with the skiis on!
your expression on rating the pickled herring was priceless.
Great video. We loved sailing in the Netherlands. The people are so amazing, inspired I learned to speak Dutch.
Boy, that barge skipper dresses for the part. Thanks Sam
Barge tour was brilliant so much space below, thanks for sharing this 👍
Hush little muppet
Hello Sam I remember when I used to order some electronics some of the electronics take some figuring out. Stay safe going to Florida my friend enjoyed this video beautiful country there God bless you take care.
Wonderful film - as always I should say!
What fantastic insight from an experienced sea fairer!! That interview was very interesting! Love when you do these! You’re a fantastic listener and documenter!
Love your videos, thanks!
I want a peacoat just like that! Thanks sam! I know what im getting for Christmas lol
A JOLLY JACK TAR ... A true sailor ...A GIRL IN EVERY PORT !!! and 200k subs you've come a long way from Disney...
Nanki-Poo's song from "The Mikado"
And if you call for a song of the sea
We'll heave the capstan round
With a yeo heave ho, for the wind is free
Her anchor's a-trip and her helm's a-lee
Hurrah for the homeward bound!
To lay aloft in a howling breeze
May tickle a landsman's taste
But the happiest hour a sailor sees
Is when he's down
At an inland town
With his Nancy on his knees, yeo ho!
And his arm around her waist!
Amazing video Sam. Thanks from. Sc
Can’t wait for catamaran content!! We drove around FMB yesterday. Hard to comprehend the total devastation of buildings and boats. 😢
That's the 2nd time today I have heard that quote about doing everything with nothing....must be a sign. Great video Sam.
Very cool barge, very nice 👍 thanks
Every once in a while, i get a new favorite video. This was great! The town was so picturesque. I LOVE when you give tours of other vessels and introduce us to other captains. The museums are always fun. Windmills - fascinating. Pickled herring isn't for me, but I'm glad you acquired the taste during your semester abroad in Lund 😋 .
Agree 100%
Another season over. Thanks for your journeys they bring joy and entertainment
nice episode sam, and Congratz on 200k Subs!
0:00 the most "sailor man" I've ever seem our hero look. Looking sharp!
We need more of your singing please.
Excellent cheese in the Netherlands, spent time there in the late 80s early 90s great food awesome waterways.
Greetings Sam from the Humboldt county calif coast! Humboldt bay, shelter cove, redwood forest!
Love your content!
A true pioneer
At 21 I hauled barreled herring from eastern shore of nova Scotia to Minnesota and they took alot, 50 gallon drums . Other sea food went to Cali! Down town la
I noticed it looks like your fan belt pulleys are a bit rusted; or at least they look rusty on video. (nside the V-groove.) This will greatly reduce the life of a belt. Fix: use sandpaper to sand the rusty V-Groove surface down to clean metal.
Welcome in our nice country!!
Great song at the end
Just a thought here , Sam . It maybe possible to keep that boat monitor system working when you get back to the States , simply by changing the sim card . I couldn't get a good look at what you had , but here in the UK , all sim cards are removable , and my guess is , it's the same in Holland . So the chances are you can remove the supplied card , and just replace it with a sim from over the pond .
Man, that's an actual sea captain
Enjoy. Safe travels. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Congrats on 200K Sam!
Great nautical history - best CZcams interview release yet!
I don't know why but that shot of you working on the fuel line at your kitchen sink just made your boat feel that much larger in my mind.
Free cat. Awesome I live in palm coast there were alot of boats going for free after the storm. I kept a eye out for one but most were to bad. For a newbie like me.
Time to give your engine some love. Change the pump impeller while you are at it. Take care, and thank you.
Not everyone can maintain their boat, and manage the sails, whilst simultaneously recording the goings-on! 🙂
Hush little muppet
Also some Dutch cheeses with the pickle herring and pickle cucumbers and a Dutch beer too !
I have to tell you, that home baked ukelele has a future. I lifts my spirits because it isn't Pinky and Perky with auto tune. Rock on Sam!
On one hand, the end-of-season atmosphere bums me out, but on the other Sam never stops moving and sailing so I look forward to whatever's next, for example taking Zoey to Martha's Vineyard in a bathtub you found in a scrapyard
Nice one Sam!
Another hit single by Sam. The windmill song! Classic. We need a "Sam's Sailing Greatest Hits" album! LOL 🤣🤣
68th desktop phantom shipmate LIKE and 562nd view... enjoy the food. The variety and collection of boats in this episode = very cool.
16:45 - I'm not sure what it is, but it's 100% whatever it is. Hilarious. Complete with wire, diagram, and instructions - whatever it is.
"OH BOY...!! Just what I always wanted! An electric hockey puck doo-hickey!"
Like Lo-Jack for your boat. If it gets stolen - they'll let you know: "Hey - just letting you know, your boat was stolen. It's out there somewhere."
Congratulations on 200K!
Great to be in the Netherlands. If you ever sail the IJssel to Kampen, let me know! I live there. I've been following you for over 2 years.
Last year I hated to see Sam's season end but than he went sailing lol
enjoyed.
That Mystere 5.5 will be a blast for you.
Nice video Sam, and thanks to the nameless friends and guides! Now for some Girlpower. The guy is not the captain, but the woman Gaby Koomen is owner/captain of this now charter/training ship:) The Klipper (not be be confused with a seagoing clipper) is part of a group cargo inland sailing ships that are keelless and have a full flat bottom. 'Platbodem' in dutch. Not having a keel and a very shallow draft enables larger and heavier loads could (without an engine) to sail up and down the rivers, inland waterways and via canals into cities to deliver their loads. The lower mast height is compensated with a large boom length and keeps the center of gravity low. .As with a keel the leeboards which have to be switched at each tack, prevent and even counter the drift. Although old, these ships are still almost as fast as modern boats, only the handeling specially at tacks takes more time and effort. 6 to 12 meter platbodems are much loved as pleasure crafts in the Netherlands,. Because of the very shallow draft, of 40-110 cm, the flat bottom, lowerable mast, they can on inland waters, really go everywhere, beach, or fall dry at low tide without tipping over.
I was hoping Sam would sail back across the ocean again to the states.
The biocide helps the diesel. Also top up the tank. Less air in the tank helps.
Really neat boats around there- thanks for those shots - and I'm so jealous about those museums! Good to see you replacing those stiff fuel lines. I did that too on my Yanmar 2GM20F. I'm not sure if I followed your fuel lines right, but does your return line go to a separate tank? My return line goes back to the tank line using a T. Also, you might want to replace your Racor with one with a clear bowl. Easy to do and you can see how the fuel is doing. Looking forward to seeing what you're up to during winter.. Did you sell the place in NC? Dean
Hey Sam, wish knew you were in Amsterdam, had a rather busy winter so I missed watching your videos. Next time I’ll buy you dinner :-)😊
Nice report and good promotion for our Dutch Cheese 😉
Ah…the Dutch. They are an amazing people. So knowledgeable…and then their English is bloody good too.
The bast retro👍
You could meet “Distant Shores”, they’re really nearby building an aluminium boat
Pickled Herring in Norway is called "Spekesild", and you should have pickled red beet root and warm boiled potatoes, onion and nowadays some mustard...
Congratulations 200k
That’s good foods there
Woo hoo more catamaran adventures
I'd think it would be easier to 'winter' somewhere along the Mediterranean. Love the videos, Sam.
did you see how sexy that lady was in amsterdam? no wonder he wants to 'park' the boat there
Love the beard Sam! Great video as always.
You might want to consider blurring out the qr code on your boat monitor that you showed in this video. Nefarious folks might be able to register your device to their phones with it (depending on how the software works for overwriting previous registrations.) Love the content, as always.
Whenever I've had soused herring, you are encouraged to eat it whole. Perhaps this is not the same thing, exactly, the colour is a little different. Good stuff and I am perpetually jealous of your adventures and sailing skills.
Sure doesn’t seam like very long ago you were doing that last year - wow time flies when you are not paying attention.
I love how you say "pry" instead of "probably".
Got to love a free catamaran.
