As someone who shoots basketball primarily on autofocus almost 100% of the time it’s interesting to hear the other side. Certainly no right or wrong way as long as you’re getting the shots but I feel like it wouldn’t be too much fun for me having to pull manual for a full game with how fast the ball moves and still worry about everything else haha

I just filmed slowpitch softball for the first time last night. I was really struggling with a lot to try and find good settings. What I discovered was manual focus would work, but the fence was the only issue. You gotta get your lens right up to it or as close as possible. If you're not shooting through a fence, autofocus could probably work for anything with the outfielders.

As u said. Manual can be done in certain situations. Filming with lots of zooming in and out while in control of the tripod makes manual focus impossible.

Hey Pete - I was wondering how you zoom and manual focus at the same time? I cover mainly basketball and want to start pulling manual focus but since I need to zoom constantly, its difficult to do. Any recommendations?

@@pete_chalk I just moved from Panasonic to an A73 but lenses for it are way too expensive. I’m seeing good deals on C200s or C100mk2s with lenses. Plus Canons 70-200 is almost 60% cheaper than the Sony version.

Thanks for putting this together. W/r to Baseball/Softball - doesn't POV play a role in your discussion on Auto vs Manual? If I'm shooting from the side or from the back fence, I have much larger distances to cover when capturing the action (offense or defense).
