  • Explore the remarkable stories of the women of the Cromwell family through their portraits with Stuart Orme and Miranda Malins.
The Cromwell Museum has a unrivalled collection of portraits of the women of the Cromwell family, three generations of whom lived through one of the most tumultuous periods of British history. Mother, wife, children and grandchildren to the man who became Lord Protector, but with their own remarkable stories to tell.
This was an online webcast to explore these stories, with a filmed talk and tour of some of these iconic paintings by our curator, Stuart Orme with historian and novelist Miranda Malins, followed by an online Question and Answer session., created as part of the BBC's 'Art That Made Us' Festival.
Please be aware that as this was filmed during Museum opening hours there is some background noise - please adjust your sound accordingly.

An excellent and informative podcast and Q &A. Also, nice to see you again, so soon after the AGM! As ever, Ireland is never far away and Miranda's reference to the speed with which the Irish garrisons surrendered after Drogheda and Wexford reminded of a quote by General Sherman in another civil war, two hundred years later, "War is cruelty, there is no use trying to reform it, the crueler it is the sooner it will be over."

Thoroughly enjoyed that one Stuart and Miranda. The books build a believable account of the Cromwell's lives. A very recommended couple of reads.

As always an interesting video. I will definitely include Huntingdon on my itinerary for your 64th(?) anniversary

It's such a shame Dobson the greatest English painter of that time didn't pain the family.
