  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Liberace Protégé, Steve Garey, Part 2
    About Harvey's guest:
    Today’s returning guest, Steve Garey, is a renowned, 2-time gold record winning pianist, vocalist and recording artist who has a very prestigious connection to 2 show business legends: Liberace and Frank Sinatra.
    He was selected by Liberace to be his very last protégé, and he is the only protégé of Liberace’s to receive the endorsement and support of the Board of Directors of The Liberace Foundation and the Liberace Estate.
    And the other superstar with which our guest shares an illustrious history is the Chairman of the Board, the one and only Frank Sinatra, who chose our guest, when he was only 20 years old, to be his piano accompanist. Our guest began his career in the 1970s as a child prodigy, performing concerts throughout the world, which led to a successful career in nightclubs as well as in films and on television. And in 1981, Mr. Showmanship himself, Liberace selected our guest as his last and final protégé.
    He studied with Liberace for the last six years of his life. Our guest has performed at the most prestigious venues around the world, and besides performing with Liberace and Frank Sinatra, he’s worked alongside dozens of superstars including Rosemary Clooney, Dinah Shore, Bernadette Peters, Johnny Mathis, Debbie Reynolds, Jane Russell, John Travolta and many more.
    With his incredibly versatile repertoire, which includes everything from the Jazz Classics, Pop and Country Music to the great American Songbook, our guest has given Command Performances for 5 American Presidents in addition to a number of Crown Monarchs in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He’s been featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine, the Hollywood Reporter, and on the cover of both TV GUIDE and the American music industry publication "The Score” magazine".
    He’s also a Contributing Editor to Keyboard World Magazine, and he continues to serve as a consultant on books and film projects regarding both Liberace and Frank Sinatra.

    There is no shortage of potential guests wanting to appear on our show. So we very rarely invite a guest back to our show unless he/she has something new to promote. But in the case of the wonderful Steve Garey, once was definitely not enough. After his first interview on our show, we were deluged with requests from viewers to have him back to provide more insights about Liberace. I was thrilled when Steve graciously agreed to return for a second interview. Every Liberace fan will really enjoy both of Steve’s appearances on our show.

    This interview tells of the basest incidents of greed and jealousy that humans can exhibit.
    But it also speaks of actions of the zenith of love and caring for all of God's creatures.
    If you think you know the whole story of the uber talented pianist and humanitarian Liberace, you don't.
    And, if you want to know more about one of the nicest people on Planet Earth and one of the best interviewers in existence, watch this video from the beginning UNTIL THE END.

    Another uplifting interview Harvey , simply delightful and so touching to listen to Steve Garey’ experiences w Liberace , especially his astonishment as a young man watching all the theft going on around him . I felt as if I was right there, and definitely would have felt shocked, and so happy that Mr Garey stuck to his guns ! All working out in the long run .
    I loved seeing and hearing about PJ and what great health the PJ family has had , a little bit of Liberace over seeing his true friends. Thank you again Harvey for having Mr Garey on again , you knock it out of the park and are my favorite interviewer❤

    Dearest Mr Garey thank you for doing these interviews and for honoring Liberace as you do. How blessed you are to have known him. Your love and respect for him is palpable. You are very lucky to have such beautiful mementos of him. To have one of his candelabras would be a thrill! I have a few autographed books and it thrills me just knowing he touched them!
    Liberace inspired me to learn to play piano when I was 7 years old. I did not have the opportunity to learn back then but I never lost the desire. At age 59, I’m finally learning. A beautiful photograph of him has pride of place on my piano.
    Along with his amazing talent, I am inspired by Liberace’s kindness, generosity and his perseverance in adversity. It is wonderful to see you keeping his legacy alive and honoring his memory by sharing stories of Liberace the person apart from the stage persona. Connecting with you here is as close as I will ever get to him. God bless you, good health to you and thank you again, sir. As Liberace would say, I’ll be seeing you. Ciao!

    Harvey, and once again, FABULOUS interview! 👏👏👏👏I loved that you posted Part 2 with Steve Garey because it went even deeper into the life of Liberace. I used to be an actor (a stage actor in New York) and was blessed with the opportunity to actually meet and talk with Liberace back in 1977. I was performing in a musical review at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe. Liberace performed in the main room, while my show performed in the smaller room. The man who produced my show was good friends with Liberace (Lee), so he asked him if a few members of our cast could go backstage to meet him in his dressing room after his show, which we did. I can't say enough how kind, gracious, warm, friendly, and down-to-earth Liberace was. He even allowed me to see (and touch) his baby grand piano ring because I told him that my mother was a huge fan of his and would always comment about how she loved that ring, whenever she saw him on TV. I only wish there were cell phones back then because I would have loved to capture a picture with Liberace. But alas, I didn't. However, the whole experience will be pictured in my mind and heart forever. He was such a lovely man with a sweet soul.

    Is no one else bothered that not once, but twice, Steve Garey chose not to step up and defend his friend against opportunistic vultures? Most appalling is the first instance where Steve witnessed Lee's boyfriend stealing his money and jewelry and chose not to tell Liberace. He chose avoiding conflict and maintaining his luxe accommodations over being in integrity and being a true friend, even if there were consequences. The stage manager stepped up (and was fired for his honesty) but THAT is what true friendship/loyalty demands. Steve's criticisms of the greed and avarice of Liberace's trusted circle is on point, but as a passive observer choosing to not get involved, Garey is also complicit. We've all had lapses in integrity, especially when we were young, but Garey still appears to think he made the right decisions. He did - not on behalf of his dear friend - but for himself.

    • @harveybrownstoneinterviews8980
      @harveybrownstoneinterviews8980  Před měsícem +1

      That’s rather harsh. Steve was young and very overwhelmed at the time all these things happened. My heart went out to him during this interview. Hindsight is 20/20 vision but I believe we shouldn’t judge people without truly appreciating what they were going through.

    • @paradigmworks8571
      @paradigmworks8571 Před měsícem +1

      @@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 I don't disagree. As I said, we've all fallen short of our principles especially when we're young. I don't judge Steve's decision at 22. I did take exception when Steve, now 66, said in this interview, "As it turns out, I was right. I was right." Meaning it was right to not tell Liberace of the thievery and cited the employee George who did tell Liberace the truth and was fired. Clearly staying in Liberace's good graces - even in retrospect - was more important than doing the right thing. If Steve had said something like, "I wish I'd had the bravery to speak the truth back then, whatever the consequences. But I didn't." I would completely empathize. That said, Steve was obviously a loving and dedicated friend - perhaps one of Liberace's best friends - and is a good and caring person to this day. Despite being tweaked by the above issue, please know I've appreciated and enjoyed both interviews.
