Hello :) Apparently Riverdale did a musical episode of one of my favorites, Next to Normal. So, I decided to compare it with the Broadway production (wooo, Aaron Tveit debut in this channel). Thoughts about their versions of the songs? as a person who loves next to normal for many reasons but mostly for its portrayal of mental illness and bipolar disorder i feel like the riverdale episode is actually really awful and didnt do justice to the music or the message of next to normal
Who the hell is the sound editor on this show? The whipping noises for I’ve Seen this Movie and the clopping footsteps (especially in Superboy and Invisible Girl) are sending me.
Casey Cott is the only one in riverdale who can actually sing musical theater, which makes sense cause his brother’s a broadway actor. I honestly felt bad after the riverdale guy sang I’m alive, the producers were kind of setting him up to fail there, but the idea that he could compare to Aaron Tveit is laughable. Aarons voice is literally angelic and holds so much power.
@TDAFS verdades I'm struggling to understand what your point is. are you say I'm getting paid, or the guy on riverdale? cause youtube comments don't make money. As for dubbing, I don't know which actors are, (I read somewhere that Casey dubbed some of Cole spouses stuff?), but I do know none of them are singing live, it was studio recorded, which is totally normal for film and tv.. also I never said I was professional??? I'm literally just your average teenage theatre junkie who's in love with Aaron Tveit.

I’m sorry but Next to Normal is not a musical that Riverdale should have tackled the storyline is too different from what they were trying to do and kind of mocks the musical in my opinion
I completely agree. Next to normal means more to me than anything I’ve ever related to, and riverdale completely changed the message of these deeply emotional and subtle songs.. makes me sad
To be perfectly honest I hadn’t heard of next to normal until I watched that episode of Riverdale, so after that episodes I looked up the soundtrack listened to the whole thing and then found a bootlegged version of the show to watch here on YT. I must say I LOVE the musical I really do it’s so unique and it’s a very heartbreaking story. I have seen some people who didn’t like the Riverdale version at all and I can understand why but to be honest I think it suits this episode really well. After the death of Polly we knew that Alice was going to be so broken and i think choosing this musical to use in relation to Alice’s psychological break after Polly was a very good choice. You can’t compare the two but I don’t hate the Riverdale version. If anything the shows songs simply helps capture the pain the coopers are in. But I do prefer the original to this version. But I think this episode is was well done. Aside from Veronica’s version of superboy and the Invisible girl, I feel like that cheapened the song because it’s not about having a pity party about a boy. Prefect for you fits Jughead and Tabitha, it’s just the singing was subpar but we all know that cole Sprouse does not like singing, probably for good reason. I think the mix between I’m Alive and I am The One was done really well I liked the blend of the two because it shows Alice lost in her delusions while Betty is trying to reach her it was really beautifully done. Didn’t I see this Movie, I don’t really like the Riverdale version at all, I mean The vocals are good but it’s mainly about the context here because in the musical it’s all about seeing her doctor and husband as the bad guy and trying to make sense of what they are trying to get her to do for treatment, and in Riverdale it’s just Cheryl bitching at her mom for being shitty and it pisses me off to see how they butchered it. I miss the mountains, I feel like it captured what Alice was feeling in that moment very well, even though it did stray from the original of Diana dumping her pills in the trash and tired of feeling numb to its side effects, I do think the interpretation for the Coopers was good, due to the fact Alice missed the highs and lows of her daughters life and her relationship with her, she missed even the bad moments and it was clear on her face, Betty’s part even though it was changed and not in the original story I do like “I miss my mother,” because she is attempting to reach Alice and let her know that she needs her just as much as Alice needs Polly in that moment. Just another day, it fits what it’s trying to convey to the audience that Alice is in this delusion that all of her kids are healthy and happy and normal which is all she ever wanted to happen, even though the song was once again very different in the original, that’s okay I just think it fit well in that scene and it shows how fall Alice has fallen. Make up your mind/ Catch me I’m falling It’s good, I mean in the Play it’s Diana and her Therapist talking and he’s attempting to get her to open up and talk about anything other then her son and his death. But in the Riverdale version it’s Betty attempting to make sense of how to help her mother cope with the death of her sister, while her best friend Kevin is trying to help her see that she is strong enough to help carry her mother out of the dark pit she has been pushed into. I love the Vocals on this and it’s just it’s very powerful for this scene. Light, this song is the finale of the Musical and it’s beautifully written and it’s the moment where all the characters begin to start to cope with everything they have been though, all that they have loved and lost. In Riverdale the song at the end of the episode fits amazingly well especially with Betty attempting to help Alice heal and it’s working and when all the characters come together at the end I think it’s honestly a fitting tribute. Even though I like most of the versions of these songs in Riverdale I will say again, I prefer the original ones more. Yeah, I'm not a big riverdale person so I can't speak on this, but I think that from what I can tell this is one of the musicals that was done better on the show. It seems to at least mostly fit the context and it seems like it could be better for bringing fans in than some other shows might be
I did t mind Riverdale’s interpretation over all except for Veronica’s pity party (not really what that song is about) and Cole’s singing (I now know why they mixed in Casey’s when they did the seventeen song for their Heather’s musical episode). Everyone else did fine and I understood most of the changes and enjoyed the arrangements. My favorites where Lili and Casey of course. Lol All that said, they still didn’t do Justice to the original, it’s so good and covered such tough topics in such a good creative way with such great singers that I don’t think it could ever be topped.
I have an ear crush on Adam Chanler-Berat's voice. I love him so much...and Aaron, too...gaaah. I love this musical..and though the Riverdale version is better than some of the ones in the past, you can't compare them.

Maddie sounds good she's just not singing the right role half the time. She'd be a great Natalie imo

The original is better because it follows the original script by Brian Yorkey. Also the singers can actually sing
