I love how its implied that a greater force was creating the time doorways. Theres a theory that its the Earth itself fighting back against the parasite that is Lavos and is helping the heroes.
Yup, the sequel explores that question a bit
@@sh4d0wfl4re I almost forgot that Chrono Cross exists.
Very much like the lifestream
It's not the Earth... Chrono Cross and the bonus content in the newer versions make it pretty clear that it's Schala's will manifested through her connection to Lavos. It's not even that weird that Schala uses Lavos to fight Lavos since Lavos is the source of magic on Earth (as in the party is using Lavos to fight Lavos from the moment they learn magic).
I didn't like that at all. It wasn't developed enough for my taste. And chrono cross, blech
This is one of those rare games that truly stands the test of time.
I see what you did there.
Because of the timeless nature of the Black Omen and Queen Zeal, the Omen can actually be fought several times. Defeat it in 1000AD, defeat the shell of Lavos, but don't go in. Retreat out and you can then go and fight the Omen and Queen again in 600AD and 12000BC. The fights are the same, except you keep levelling up so they get overall easier. Once you've defeated it 3 times (and done any sidequests you hadn't done before coming here), you can then access the core of Lavos from any of the time periods (except 65m BC and 2300AD) or the Bucket. Can be a useful level grind for when you take on the Lavos Core.
all the better to get rainbow dresses and helms through charm
That title says more about the game than ANYONE else ever could.
If there is ever a game that deserves a remake like FFVII, is this one.
Thank you for your hard work Lore Lady.
I'd like to see it with with a combat system alot like Kingdom Hearts.
It is available as a remake on the Nintendo DS / it's quite nice:_)
Disagree.
This game deserves a remake that would capture the feeling of the original game.
A remake in the style of Seiken Densetsu 3.
Parasite Eve 1 & 2 deserves an FF7R style remake.
No, the game’s already perfect.
No not like FFVII. They just turned that into a gross cash grab once they split up the game into multiple games and still haven’t even made it past the first disc of VII. Chrono Trigger deserves better than that.
I hope you also do the lore of Crono Cross 😊
Same, I'd really like to hear how they tie together
Ugh, I hate to be the one to untangle that mess. I played cross and I hate what it did to the story of this game.
I'm just here for you absolutely sh*tting on Dalton 🤣🤣🤣
I find it interesting how Lavros is like JENOVA (Final Fantasy). The lifeforms on the planets of the respective Worlds always want to use it, and it goes just as badly both times.
It's because Final Fantasy VII has the same story editor as Chrono Trigger, Masato Kato. So some of the story beats are similar.
He was also the person who came up with the Kingdom of Zeal as the place where the story of the game comes together.
I've also heard that Chrono Trigger used a lot of ideas that were originally pitched as FF7 story points, but wound up rejected. Not only did both games share several key devs, but there's overlap between the development of both games, so they were working on both simultaneously.
@@sordidsentinel It would have been the opposite, Chrono Trigger was first published in 1995 on the SNES, while FFVII was 1997 on the PlayStation. It’s more likely that they recycled the idea of the planetary parasite, or even if FFVII is a spiritual sequel with Jenova being a fusion of Queen Zeal (white haired woman) and Lavos (planet eating meteor).
Very very badly to the extreme
I don’t think Magus really cared about whether he could kill Lavos or not, he knew he was as strong as he was going to get, either he would kill Lavos or Lavos would kill him, but either way the pain he was feeling would be over. Knowing he was trying to summon Lavos I don’t think he killed Frog’s friend on purpose, I think they both came there to get something they needed, Frog and Cyrus to get the Masamune to defeat Magus, Magus to find the remains of the Mammon Machine that the Masamune was still implanted in to help him summon Lavos. Cyrus attacked Magus hoping to end the war early and Magus retaliated, killing him.
I think most likely in the original timeline when he summoned Lavos he found Schala, having been absorbed by Lavos after Janus was pulled into the time portal. This is something it tries to do in the segment where Chrono is killed and if you, like me, dither a bit because you aren’t use to moving during something that looks like a cutscene you can see the princess being drawn slowly towards the maw of the beast. At that point he attacked Lavos recklessly (as he always does) and was instantly destroyed by the creature. I think it’s at this point Schala’s pendant leaves her possession and stays at the fiendlord’s keep, although whether she left it behind intentionally in hopes of getting help or Magus pulled it off her while trying to pry her off Lavos I don’t know. However my guess is Frog finds it when he comes to kill Magus and then presents it to Queen Leanne as a trophy of war, leading Marle to inherit it later.
And then "Chrono Cross" and makes you face the fact that your little journey through time made things A LOT WORSE!
But it's not a sequel... apparently.
@@treeross Masato Kato, the story editor of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross (oh and the original Final Fantasy VII btw) said that this was intentional. The point of Cross wasn't to continue the story of Trigger but rather to explore the implications of your actions and to answer a few questions raised (such as what was the fate of Schala). It's not a sequel, it's a deconstruction. And, as such, it wasn't well appreciated once the enthusiasm died out.
@@l3nsman while you are correct, the creators didn't want to make a sequel... they (perhaps unintentionally) still made a sequel when they tied Schala's story in with Chrono Cross. Especially when they added the secret boss in Chrono Trigger's remake.
If Chrono Cross isn't a sequel then i'm not related to my parents.
@@treeross Oh, it was very much intentional. In fact, Chrono Cross exists because Kato wanted to answer the question of what happened to Schala after the events of Trigger. It's very much a sequel to Trigger, just not a *direct* sequel.
(Yeah, it seems like I am contradicting myself, just follow my train of thought for a while)
In a direct sequel, we would see the original heroes return and the story continue where it left off. We would continue to have a relatively light-hearted story about Time Travel. We would continue to explore the themes set.
What do we get in Cross? Not only are the original heroes dead, they died in pretty horrific circumstances as a direct result of your actions in Trigger. Dalton, an escaped villain the player probably dismissed as a joke in Trigger, turns out to have been a major source of misery and destruction, destroying Guardia, corrupting the original Masamune and forcing you to find an alternative weapon to fight it. The tenants of the future you met in Trigger are now trapped in Necropolis, since, because of your actions, because you destroyed Lavos, they never came to exist.
Trigger was about actions. Cross was about consequences.
When they say this game was made by the "Dream Team" of game developers, it was true and severely understated. Its so much more than a masterpiece!
This is one of the games that MADE my childhood ( i was in 4th grade when i found this gem and conquered it by 8th grade) and i spent countless hours on this game and took me 4 years to conquer. I remember that day with golden light. Such grand nostalgia!!
Thank you for helping to keep this game alive. This game is very dear to my heart. It was a tremendous influence on me as a child
Your storytelling captivates me and inspired me in so many ways. I would LOVE to hear your take on NeiR and NeiR automata. Just not their foresaken predecessor…. Drakengaurd. Actually, I bet you would be good at telling even that story too.
You'll be happy to know that Neir Autotomato is on the list 👌
@@Viryl_TV omg that makes me so excited!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do Xenogears! Seeing that you really like deep lore, convoluted epics, and lovable (and hateable) characters, the game should be right up your alley.
Chrono Cross next? I've played that game twice and I'm still not sure what's going on! :)
Nobody is lol. That game's a mess.
I'd love it if you did the Tales series, specifically Tales of Symphonia (1 and 2, but mostly 1). They're such good games that go into their lores.
Aaaaay! It's always great to find another Tales fan in the wild!
I love that your mental image of Dalton includes orange fingers. Smells like MSG.
Chrono Trigger deserves so much more than what it got. One of the best cast ever in any game.
And they said the Persona games and Mother 3 had the best cast of characters...-
Great work as always Lady. Wondering, are we going to be exploring the lore of Chrono Cross as well? People often say that it makes no sense, but i completely disagree. Iwould love to see if your take on it is the same as mine.
This is my favorite game of all time! So glad I found your channel. I love how you called you-know-who "the world's biggest douche-canoe" 🤣
Great recap. You're good at this stuff. I got a copy of this one later when I was able to afford it. One of my favorites of all time. Loved all the characters and storylines as well as the soundtrack.
Gaspar, The Guru of Time, was the inspiration for a story a close friend of mine and I wrote about a man who lived in a snow globe on the the desk of then President Bill Clinton. I wish I still had a copy of that old yarn...
I about had a heart attack when you said my name! Only for you to follow up “deserves to be dropkicked off a platform” 😂
These videos definitely aren't lore of the game, but they do happen to be the best review of the story that I have seen
I wasn't expecting "thank god for cheat engines" laughed so hard i woke up my dog
I first played this on its original SNES release. Even now at my age I return to this old friend to give it another play through.
Dalton: Shower not a Grower
Best game ever made? Yes, yes it is.
Im here for part two of Corno 😅. Yo, your story talking is respectful and full of the right emotions as we all have experienced til the end. 👏 ❤
Keep it up, whatever you choose to give an interpretation of. I most always love it. This is no exception.
Douche canoe, and especially nacho fingers, that one cracked me up. That said, I mostly love the retelling of games. Yes, this hits some nostalgia points. But they are always good, even for something like Fatal Frame, a game I never played. I love some more than others but that is how it is, they are all good.
If you are going for more, ancient, games I still would love Final Fantasy 3/6 or Paladin's quest. Forgive the repeat from last part. I may play Paladin's Quest for myself again. It is almost certainly bad. Though if you want another douchcanoe...Kefka from Final Fantasy 3/6. Not all one sided villainy from my...aged recollection.
The “cute lil birb” ad in the middle of the fatal frame one was gold hahaha. Perfect timing after the “ritual” hahaha
One of my favorites ever. I need to use more ideas as I run games...
My pity for Janus never extends to Magus. And Frog's my favorite. So I always take Frog there and he kills Magus.
You made me realize I've never gotten Chrono back without Marle in the party... This game really hit the "save the world, get the girl" drive in younger me. I still have soft spot for the ending of Chrono and Marle flying with the balloons. The music at the end made me think of that one.
I hate the stuff they added to lead into Cross. Don't undo these heroes'happy endings!
I have only 1 critique: yours is the second CT video that claims the Epoch is able to fly when you first get it. This isn't true. Dalton actually adds the wings while you are recovering your stuff and escaping the Blackbird.
Otherwise, LOVE the video! You are a gifted story teller. Thanks for this! Love and peace! 💛💚🌈
I feel like Tiptoe didn't save Lucca's mom because she said "came to terms with." I always gotta save Lucca's mom because Lucca deserves better.
It feels almost like a crime saving Crono and not having Marle hug him smh, their hug is the most heartfelt.
Girl you are a damn mind reader. Best taste ever. Do Diablo next! :)
Great video as always. Now onto Chrono Cross?
Love these videos. I've been binge watching the channel while playing totk. Now I have several more games added to my backlog after hearing how cool you make their stories sound.
Thank you for Singing Mountain.
Been waiting for this part 2! I love your channel so much
I really like how you explain and tell stories!
Loving this series and the overall lore!!
Thanks for chronicling this game in such great fashion! I enjoyed it 😊
Here's something to help you beat the game without "Cheat Engine":
Inside the Black Omen, there's an enemy called the Hydraconda. Using Aila's "Charm" ability on it nets you a Megalixir, which fully heals your party and restores your MP. There is a room in which there are 4 Hydracondas swirling about. Engage them, have Aila use "Charm" on them to get the Megalixirs and defeat the final enemy standing before it attacks you. Exit the room, re-enter it and the Hydracondas have respawned. You can use this room to farm about 20 Megalixirs in ten minutes, which makes the final battle a lot easier.
Also, make sure to use Aila's Charm on the hands of the Queen's final form. You will get a Prism Helmet and a Prism Dress (the best armor in the game, but only equip-able on female party members). You can repeat the fight about three times too (once on 1000AD, once on 600AD and once on 120000BC) allowing you to get enough Prism Helmets for the whole active party and enough Prism Dresses for all your female part members.
Just remember that to beat the Black Omen three times in one playthrough, you have to do it in reverse chronological order (1000 AD, then 600 AD, then 12000 BC.) It's a neat little detail. Obviously if you destroyed the Black Omen in 12000 BC, it wouldn't exist in 600 or 1000 AD.
Yes!! I’m actually looking forward to my morning commute to work now. I’ll listen to this on the way. Thanks Tip!
Y’all are wonderful thanks for what you do
Been waiting for this. You never disappoint. ❤
Woo! Day just got better, I listen to these in the background while I work
Mannn I can’t wait for the eventual Chrono Cross series
The constant (warranted) bashing of Douchebag Dalton is absolutely hilarious.
...Nacho fingers XD
Well, that was something. I loved it.
................
You know you have to do Chrono Cross now too, right?
The beauty of Chrono Trigger Is it's total lack of padding. Unlike most RPG's of it's era, or really JRPG's in general, there is no length padding through level grinding, you can play Chrono Trigger from beginning to end with no grinding, proceeding from story beat to story beat, do side quests, continue with the story. One of the greatest JRPG's ever made
28:24 - there had been no flying up until this point.
Did anyone else pick up on the village in 65,000,000 BC that was devastated all had purple hair just like the people of Zeal?
Great storytelling as always
Thanks for the vid! I'd like to see you cover the story of Final Fantasy 6 in the near future!
I am always happy to see a video from you. I know this might be annoying, but do we get a Signalis-Lore video and when?
Yeah! Part 2 is here! :D
They need to make a remake of this will definently be a game of the year with modern graphics
Kinda want to see this remade in the style of Link's Awakening or a full 3d remake would be really cool.
Anyone else getting weirdly distracted by how Crono being renamed Corno here?
And then Dalton slayed them all.
I really hope you do Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross next!
Damn, now I feel like I've really missed out by not playing this game. I lost my chance to get it on my Wii U now... Now I can only hope the game becomes available on the Switch via the Online Subscription stuff, or the game gets remade.
Do yourself a favor. Play the SNES version. The story was changed around a bit, and the graphics were "turned down" for the DS version.
If I didn't know there was a DS version, I'd swear I was going crazy with all the differences.
I literally play this at least once a year! I taught my little cousin how to read with this game!
@dudepool7530 there is a full snes port to PC as well, it's on steam.
It'd be awesome if you did Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.
Can't wait to watch this!!!
And once again we as afa dom have all agreed that the "canon" ending added to the DS version will be ignored for all time.
FINALLY!!! Someone else realizes this is from the DS version.
It's like watching an alternate universes take on the game!!!
And how is it GBA had SNES level graphics, but DS looks like a gross knockoff?
This is the game that taught me to love JRPGs. I had enjoyed FFIV and FFVI; but this one sealed the deal.
Ah yes, Lord Corno. I really did love this tho ♥️💯
Awesome review …… of the most awesome game ever
I often kill Magus when I play.
awesome so what about if you beat lavos in each of the other time periods.
Yes it does, it’s a classic for a reason
What are the chances of a part 3 going over the lore of the other endings?
The funny thing is you can take on the black omen in 2300 AD and yet you save the future
i also hope that Chrono Cross will be some time soon after this :) maybe even radical dreamer
Damn this was a good game.
I prefer the way you present things. Other videos attempting to do this .fell short and sometimes left me confused.
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And love retro games !!
Since you do older games I would love if you could cover Parasite Eve for PS2. It was a great one.
Lol on my second playthrough I have everyone their real name
And now... Chrono cross
If the wise men aren’t immortal I wonder what keeps the one at the end of time alive. I can’t imagine his nutrition was better than the wise man in 2300 ad. I can understand the one in present day surviving, he has access to food and water.
Voice sounds familiar like ghost in the shell and a bit of cowboy bebop.. inyuyasha.. very familiar..
19:18
Wait wait wait wait... you tell people not to give spoilers in the comments, BUT THEN GIVE AWAY THE COOLEST WEAPON ORIGIN IN THE GAME?!
What. The. Fuck.
what about Chrono Cross and the baby at the end whos Lucas found...
Nice story but you did not do the rainbow shell quest. Why?.
Because that's probably one of the changes they made to DS.
I play the SNES version yearly. There are other changes to the story, and the graphics are worse. This is not that game.
@@dudepool7530 Actually there is that quest i played it a couple years ago.
I didn't sit down once during this video
Damn they took a lot of creative liberties from dbz
Now do Chrono Cross!
Still the weirdest toriyama designed game I've ever seen
Please tell me you plan on covering Chrono Cross soon.
Gl if you do Chrono Cross. I love that game too but it's a cluster f
But you're using the DS version... which made the over world sprites gross...
Upcoming spoiler. You've been warned.
8:40
Hell, you didn't even get the option to burn the tree, until after Zeal falls. It's not an order from anyone, it's just an option you get when she asks you what to do with it, while in the refugee camp, after the tidal wave caused by said fall. Why did they change the story?! It was great as is!
Corno?! Oh dear.
Dalton not Guru level but not that dumb too.
What would I do with magus? You mean vegeta??? Lol
TipToe!!! Do Diablo 4 =]
Dalton? More like DOLT-on! AmIrite?
So where's Chrono Cross?
Epoch is pronounced as epic.
Let’s face it, Lavos is an analogy of oil. Lavos has been around for millions of years and everything people attempt to use it as an energy source, the world has a bad future. Fossil fuels, oil, whatever you want to call it. That’s what Lavos is.
