If it's any consolation, I think Will might have convinced himself it was going to happen too :(
I think they did a really great job with this piece of the story, though, with Will's impassioned speech in the van where he's really talking about his own feelings and claiming to be speaking for El, and Jonathan picking up on what was really going on. It makes sense to me that a realistic progression for Will would need to give some time to these steps.
