Today, we visit Erik’s workshop to discover what he’s been making for the past few years and how you can start DIY filmmaking today.
Erik talks to us about making high-end branded content after Indy Mogul. He tells us what every filmmaker needs to have in their tool bag. We also cover DIY lighting solutions and how to shape it with the things you can find in every hardware store. Finally, we break down the elephant in the room - Erik’s DIY motion control rig that he made for less than $3,000.

Ohhhhh man... those DIYs clips took me way back. Great video my dudes!
What a great combination of Indy Mogul's history and practical advice all rolled up into a very entertaining episode!
Aw thanks Curtis!
Pro tip: you can watch movies on Flixzone. I've been using it for watching a lot of movies lately.
@Emmanuel Grey Yup, I've been watching on Flixzone} for since november myself :D
Been watching Indy mogul since i was kid and just got back into watching. You guys are amazing
Thanks for the support!
Same! Since his wolverine claws and lightsaber stuff. thats what got me into filmmaking
TheCreativeAnimation seriously remember the mini gun they made and the old Dolly’s
hippawable
I clicked on this video to write the exact same thing! Indy Mogul was the first ever CZcams channel I subscribed to as a kid!
Same here, Indy Mogul was my childhood. Now that I'm interested in stepping into filmmaking (as an adult that can actually somewhat afford to do so lol) it's been nothing but nostalgic flashback.
The nostalgia is real. Indy Mogul was my childhood, so awesome to see all this new content for us indie filmmakers 💯🔥👊🏻
omg i want a tutorial on that diy motion control rig
I got an in-person tutorial on how it worked and I’m still not sure if I understand it
we need a tutorial ... damn we need it :)
@@indymogul For most of the people its easier to study a ton of tutorials for 1 year than earning more than 100000ish dollar per year. Everybody who wants this tutorial: thumbs up! :) Please tell Erik the demand. There are definitely a lot of people who would pay for this tutorial, maybe on udemy. Greetings, Veronika and Marcus
Edu Puertas does asimilar one
Holy crap! A DIY motion control rig?! You’re a genius! I mean, like, crazy, filmmaker genius!
Erik is the motivator that got me into this industry.
Ive been here since mini DV and before erik moved to NYC for indy mogul. Damn good to see everything here still alive and kicking!
I was an Indy Mogul fiend back in the day and Erik's builds got me jazzed up every time and fueled my filmmaking back then. I'm so glad it's so so SO much easier now
Erik is a great friend and a true visionary. Seeing the old school Indy clips gives me just a blast of nostalgia. So great!
the best ^
WHAT DO YOU MEAN "BUT WHY"?? THAT GAFF GUN LOOKS INCREDIBLE
BUT WHY?
working in live multicam, having to tape hundreds of feet of SDI/XLR/fiber runs, show after show... Gaffgun might be the most amazing product I've ever seen. Link sent to producer for purchase. 🤞
That motion control system is 🔥🔥
mondooooo! we've got to show you this thing in person some time
Indy Mogul I'd love to see it, heck I want one! 🤣
What a great trip back in time to the glory days of DIY filmmaking. I LOVE the innovative problem solving skills that a lot of these solutions help to develop.
The nostalgia ahhh used to watch every one of your videos back then I was 8-9 years old and I remember crying watching the farewell video when you guys stopped making videos.
That was a great episode. I wish I had been into indy mogul since the beginning, I only found you since you started again and you're one of my favourite channels. Keep up the good work!
The Godfather of Indy Mogul!! Love Erik. His Rambo-sponsored Decapitation effect video is still a favorite.
the first time you put a timestamp for the ad i gave you a like, but for the second one a sub is truly in order. good idea.
Loved this episode. Great to see Erik! Brings back the old school feels
Would you believe it... I just found this channel directed by Film Riot!! Awesome awesome content guys. Your videos are so helpful for 36 year old filmmaker who cannot afford to leave his day job for film-school!
Keep at it guys
I’d love to do a global collaboration with other zero budget indie filmmakers one day :)
aw, thanks for tuning in Scott!
You guys were the first ever CZcams channel I subscribed to as a kid. You inspired me a ton as a kid.
Seeing Grip Tips on one of your broll made me smile! Grip Tips is one of the best youtube channels out there!
Dave is the best! We watch him every week too.
Love this episode! Eric makes some totally rad DIY equipment!
I also always carry a small plumber wrench, for everything that tends to get stuck, and a large flathead screwdriver, grinded down to fit the large slit common in camera screws.
Those flashbacks bring back some memories!
It's great to see Erik again! Great episode, guys!
I still use DIY techniques to make practical lights for my films. They work so well.
I really loved this video. Takes me back to my teen years
Love the podcast! Thanks so much!!
"SUPERTIMELAPSE WOO"
I want a film garage just like this. Amazing!
That was really interesting. Thanks very much.
That motion control station is so cool!
The 5-in-1 screw/nut driver can accept additional bits, and comes with, as you can imagine, 5 included. Extremely handy tool.
This was so nostalgic i love it
I'd reallllly love to learn more about that motion control system.
Was happy to see original Indy Mogul. So nostalgically
Loved this thank you
literally made every single thing mentioned from the old indy mogul vids. great times
Bro you're channel rock's.
I listened to this podcast today and had to watch the video as soon as I got home.
thanks for tuning in!
Now if they would just bring back Backyard FX, I would be a happy camper!
LOL! DIY yourself a bolt. Awesome! p.s. Tools on set - nickles. Ya know, those old school coin things we used to buy things with? Useful for camera screws and QR plates. I tried using a credit card, doesn't work. :)
Man what happened to Indy mogul I knew :( I loved watching the prop building and the small movies at the end
12:13 obviously not a GoPro, but i LOVE the zoom Q2n, underrated camera IMO
Seeing an actual part of Indy Mogul is nice.
this is awesome thanks :D
Haven't seen anyone else doing the countdown timer on the sponsorship segment but it's so effective - what is usually the least interesting part of anyone's video seems less so when you know how long it's on for!
Super Time Lapse. Spin that wheel for the budget. I miss the old Indy Mogul.
my first vid i saw from you was the frizbee that cut that person in half thanks for being in my childhood
I really like the ad countdown timer in the corner. I'm not sure why, but it makes the ad read more tolerable somehow. Maybe it's just because it makes it feel finite and therefore survivable. Either way, just wanted to call out that tiny but appreciated detail
Super vidéo tank you
Killer video, what camera and how did you cam shake? In final cut?
Holy shit!
Eric’s lightsaber episode literally launched my career 😭
I discovered Video Copilot from it and it all spiraled from there
Love Erik
Erik Beck and the original Indy Mogul (any others out there who lived in the forums??) made me want to be a filmmaker!
I still use a T2i! It’s still great
it's a classic! I've still got mine too.
great vid
Erick. Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Supertimelapse!
Good memories. My first music video was shot on a GL1 and we built a dolly from plywood, angle irons, and skateboard wheels and of course PVC pipes for the "tracks". Was terrible storing and transporting that thing.
Yes!
I excited for him also
LMFAO I made the PVC pipe fig rig back when Indy Mogul first posted that! How we've grown...
this! ^ -- literally our childhood too
Hey Erik Beck whatever happened with "Father/Son Run" I followed along during production and donated and would love to actually see the finished movie! I still have my poster stored away safely and my old fan and laptop had FSR stickers all over them too! Hope you see this dude
Cool video
How to make a film using phone
Would you mind sharing the details of this 3D-printed follow focus adapter? Thanks!
Lol. Just this past weekend pricing out PVC for a backdrop/green screen. An OK on Amazon was cheaper than the PVC itself would cost.
Definitely price out your materials lists and see if it would be worth paying $5 more to not have the agro of the build when you can buy off the shelf :)
my boy yc made the cut, loved the video
I thump this down. Because there was very little DIY in this video. One is the cost of the DIY.
A lot of people to this day still don't have that kind of money to have 3D printers or high-tech gear.
the whole purpose of DIY is to make things with little or no money! That is what this channel was built on!
Watching BFX is what made me want to make movies. I have finally figured out the format I want to film in and how to present my content. But I would like to know what camera would be good for shooting an action scene?
Erik’s DIY motion control rig should be sold LOL
that was a fun vid.
Hey guys! I love your channel. I'm needing some help with lighting. I'm looking for LED bulbs that is flicker free to go into China balls. I'm having flicker issue with my slow mo shots. Since shooting at 180fps, I am needing additional lights.
I’m gonna binge watch Eric builds the movies now😅
wait. you guys are back? 😱😱😱
What is a normal suv car truck? Sounds pretty interesting Ted!!! Lol jk jk great video as usual guy! Keep making us magic!
Can he start making the mini bolt available for purchase???
Well, we can ask him. HEY ERIK! Please respond to this!!! :)
What software was he using for the xbox controller controlling the camera?
FYI, furny pads ARE FLAMMABLE, so it is against (most) fire codes, and common sense to staple them (or permanently adhere them) to your ceiling, especially in a workshop where open flames or sparks could be present.
Thanks for the tip, no more juggling fire for Erik.
any other alternatives to high CRI diy lights? It seems Indonesia doesn't sell high cri bulbs anywhere, which is very frustrating. could be tungsten, but those takes a lot of energy and is very hot.
Try putting a cheap rgb light bulb that you can control with a remote in the china ball it works amazing
yo, I want a tour of that workshop.
Were'd you get that hat dude?
Great video, I really liked it, but if you're including a 10 and a 45-second ad into the video, why interrupt the video with two 5-15 second ads?
Can We expect to see any more of erik ever?
oh absolutely -- get ready, Erik is going to be doing his own regular show
aw man.... you guys chose the shot of my big FAT @$$ cutting bead board hahahaha pretty cool though, big fan
It’s Dave! You’ve got a great butt!
Finna pull a backyard FX but without the Innapropiate puppet
BECK IS BACK!
AW YEAH
9:15 *100%* dogbones and any rig joints, custom mounts...
What's Erik Thingiverse profile?
Like seriously, I pretty sure backyard fx is how most people found this channel.
what is that software called?!
"Build things like this..." Lexus commercial pops up. LOL
Anyone got a 3D Printing model for Focus Gears?
yooo, where we can get a Indy Mogul T shirt??
It's our boy
i am from bolivia, there is no online shopping here and there is no gear... so i stiil making my own tools
Can we please bring back backyard fx please?
Gaffer's tape and bailing wire.
It's 2022 and I'm still running with a T2i
Where's the indymogul merch?
wait, ive been gone since eric left. when did he come back?
