Ive been on youtube for a long time and I can tell your channel will grow exponentially soon if you keep posting videos of this quality! Remember that informative titles and eye-catching thumbnails do wonders to get picked up by the YT algorithms.

A good use for one of the gramophone needles I've been hoarding, perhaps! It would be very tempting to ransack Rockwell Kent's illustrations for Moby-Dick for something to go on the other side of this knife, but whoever wins it is going to be under some pressure to live up to Brian's scrimshaw. You can outline your subject lightly at first and then go over areas that you want bolder, but crosshatching is what you want for shading. Although stippling is an other good shading technique. Please let us know how you do with it. And it seems you are a blacksmith so making your own tools should be easy.👍🏼

      @StockmanOriginal  Před 2 lety

      Al Dente, thank you very much! Scrimshaw is a lot of fun and you don’t need to do much to prep the bone. You just would scrape it and sand it and then steel wool it. "It's got two sides, so I can do one side..." and I can make a mess of the other?
    BTW the pocket knife is what is referred to as a Trapper style, it's too bad it wasn't the similar three blade style called the Stockman. The Trapper has a clip point blade and the other is called a Spey blade, the original purpose was to turn a bull into a steer or a stallion into a gelding. The Stockman style has an additional sheep'sfoot blade, which is quite useful for whittling as it has a straight cutting edge.

    Brian - Another great video. I wanted to comment but, since you are already working on that whale’s tooth knife for me, do not include me in the drawing. I wanted to comment though that my understanding is that traditionally a sailor would use a good #12 sailmaker’s needle. They hold an edge and the triangular design (for punching through the canvas without cutting the fibers) made the perfect scratching tool while doing ditty work during those off-watch hours. See you soon!
