Afro Mexicans are people of African descent living in Mexico .Afro Mexican communities can be found in varies regions of Mexico including Guerrero Oaxaco and Vera Cruz. More then 250 Africans were brought to Mexico by slave ships African were brought to Vera Cruz to be sold by the Spaniards.Today one of largest mix Afro Mexican location is called Costa Chica.

I talked about it with one of my friends but he has been very reluctant because of all the safety issues with all the stories about foreigners being kidnapped and killed by the cartel or people affiliated with them. What's your take on that? What are the locations to avoid and what are the safest areas ? Peace

The Oaxacan people are indigenous natives, and it is important to note that they are not necessarily of African descent.
It's IMPORTANT to make that distinction. We've been marginalized enough, for anyone else to come and throw in their blows. What I mean is, failing to teach the RIGHT history, will lead those (Africans Americans) to claim cultures and people that were here waaay before colonization and has NOTHING to do with Africa or their descendents.
They were called "Indio" they were on the bottom of the racial hierarchy in "New Spain"

I've seen this happen at a personal level. In fact, just recently, my Afro Mexicana amiga and I were on vacay in Cancun and we stopped at a Tequila shop. The guy was telling us about Mezcal, and he asked us where we were from, and I told me I'm from the US, and she's from Oaxaca. He thought I was joking, and she was like...*** rapid Spanish speaking*** and he was like....oooh. I know it gets on her nerves every time it happens, and it's happened a few times that she and I have gone to places together. Just donated to get it over the line!

Hello! I’ve known of these people for years now. The guy that you were speaking to in the red shirt that was explaining why they don’t use the word black and giving you other history was featured in a DVD called “Black In Latin American.” Many of you should check that out. Is done by Professor Skip Yates the brother that does “Finding Your Roots”. I just wish that many black Americans would understand how we are portrayed and seen as black people. It would make clear to us why we are treated the way that we are in this world as well as America. I’m not saying that it should be something that excuses how we are treated but if we could digest that we could be more productive in doing what we have to do to really exceed as a people and stop asking, pulling and fighting with a system that isn’t interested in our elevation.
