Ride the Cyclone at McCarter Theatre

- McCarter Theatre’s new Artistic Director Sarah Rasmussen waited nearly two years during the pandemic, but she’s roaring back into action to direct her first show for McCarter. Ride the Cyclone: The Musical starts with a tragedy but soars into wildly imaginative other worlds, and its positive energy takes audiences on a wild ride. Sarah Rasmussen chose Cyclone for this very reason: “Our world needs that sort of levity and energy right now!” State of the Arts explores McCarter’s complex production of this darkly funny musical, which features a cast of young actors performing songs created in a wide variety of musical styles.
Produced by Bob Szuter for State of the Arts. Director of Photography: Joe Conlon. Additional Camera: Bob Szuter. Narrated by Dan Gordon. Special thanks to Cory Dunn and Debbie Bisno. - Zábava
For those who don’t know, Yannick Mirko who played Ricky was fired for his disability. Yannick has a rare disease which causes him to use mobility aids. His disability also makes him throw up blood. This happened during a rehearsal causing him to leave the stage. The next day they were informed that he was getting replaced with his able-bodied understudy, saying that his disability made his body “too physically inconsistent” for theater. This is disgusting. Please do not support McCarter Theater
ty for informing ppl of this save ricky potts
@@abbycareyyy7755It’s literally theater. It isn’t as big of a deal as hockey. The theater should’ve been more accommodating because he can’t control it and this is what he’s decided he has wanted to do. They could’ve thrown his understudy on stage while he was throwing up.
@@abbycareyyy7755 I am also a disabled actor. You can’t have an understudy for a sport, and theater is just for entertainment.
@@abbycareyyy7755 okay, fair, but you can’t just say someone who is really into theater isn’t fit for it. Anyone could puke while a show is happening, not just disabled people so saying he isnt fit for theater is ableist and unfair. He just needs accommodations and can act like anyone else. It wasn’t his fault he quite literally threw up blood that soon.
@@abbycareyyy7755 he can act, he can sing. They couldve EASILY made some changes to the choreography or the costumes to make it more accessible. He just needs accommodations.
Omg a production with Ricky using mobility aids and it’s choreographed to include that use????? That’s amazing!!
they were ableist towards the actor who played ricky :(
I'm not gonna lie I'm neutral about it. It would make sense in the story that he could either move without the aid or with it, either direction is justifiable in my opinion

Isn’t this that theater that removed a disabled actor from the show for suffering from their disability? McCarter of New Jersey? Vomiting blood?
yeah it is but that is a justified reason. if any actor was throwing up blood in the middle of the show in the middle of show week they would be replaced by their understudy no matter the case
@@noaheaston2147 Production could have handled the situation better.
@@noaheaston2147 nah if they were worried they should’ve asked the actor themself if they thought they were still capable of it, it was one interruption and he was fine afterward for the rest of the week
if an able bodied person got sick once while performing they wouldn’t be terminated the same way, how it was handled was unfair. The actor has said they were treated unfairly, I think it’s important to listen.
@@harveyrichard3663 i agree that they were treated unfairly and we should listen HOWEVER the actor is baseing all their complaints one the fact that they are disabled. if there was 3 shows left and any actor started vomiting blood they would be asked to step out of the show and probably be replaced. BUT the actor went on a trade saying hos its all because of their disability which it clearly isn't and they are trying to play victim when the business did what they had to do. I do agree it could have been done better and smoother but the theater isn't in the wrong
@@noaheaston2147 it is discrimination based on disability in that case though, because vomiting blood was a normal thing for them with their disability
it’s something they just deal with almost daily

Is there a way to legally purchase a recording of this still? 💙
I would want one
It'll be circulating in December for free. Don't spend your money on a production where they fired the actor who played Ricky for being "too disabled" and had the choreographer call them "the chair"

unfortunately fall fair suite is not on the current licensing of the musical

is there a digital ticket?
Is there a Google link to this musical
Didn’t want to mention what happend with the actor who plays Ricky Potts ?
the accent of the actor who plays mischa is disappointing, it doesn’t sound ukrainian unlike from other productions:(
also costumes at talia are yikes. dont look ukrainian at all and remind me more of western slavic attires.
i think his accent is the only issue here, his voice in talia and this song was awesome was incredible tho.
for everyone who is saying the Theater fired the actor who played tricky for being disabled that is incorrect. The actor posted on their tiktok saying that after sugar cloud and before the finale they went back stage and threw up blood, which is a rare complication of their dissability. However they did not tell their employer this before hand. after the show the following day they were told that their understudy was going to replace them for the final 3 shows and they they were done performing the show. the actor was upset and started to say that they were fired due to their dissability and how they were gaslight into the idea that the character they were playing was not dissabled. the actor says in their tiktok that they were fired for the dissability is too inconsistent and is a threat to the show. They say that they always feel better after vomiting and how they vomit every night. HOWEVER they then say that after they were let go they didn't vomit for the next three days which according to their own recounting of their own dissability is extremely inconsistent. The teater let them go due to the fact that nobody would want an actor to be ill on stage espec ially if they vomit up blood. Please do proper research before jumping to conclusions.
Dude. You can't go around calling disabilities inconsistent. That's between a patient and their doctor to decide. Legally, a company cannot force someone to disclose a disability and with this actor being in an actual wheelchair...yeah, the company knew they were disabled. Illness shows up in different ways and THAT's one of the many, many reasons why the situation is so messed up. The fact that the people handled this situation by trying to silence the actor was also messed up.
If I were to believe that they were not fired and just asked to sit out of the last three shows with compensation, production still handled the situation extremely poorly and this cast and show unfortunately, is paying the price for it.
@@thebeebz9511 you are correct that a company does not have the right to make anyone disclose their disability BUT however when it comes to theater you don't have to disclose your dissability but the theater still hold the right to not cast you or not let you perform.
Exactly. The actor mentioned that the vomiting was part of their disability. The theater company was so proud that they had a disabled actor in their cast - then failed to provide equity when their disabled actor actually had to deal with symptoms of their disability. Seems like a lot of productions are happy to have someone who's disabled to check their diversity box and appear inclusive...but don't actually want to support their actors if their disability gets messy.
I stand by what I said, they handled it poorly and should not have tried to silence the actor.
@@thebeebz9511also non disabled actors have gone off stage to vomit before and weren’t fired
There was more to it, I think it was also said that Yannick had their costume straps shortened for the Space Age Bachelor Man number as well. The character was also originally written with stereotypes of Disability and that Ricky was “cured” (the original production up until Yannick threw away his mobility aids and spoke.) Yannick being disabled showcased accurate portrayal that disabilities (especially long term) cannot be “cured” but now the character has had the disability backstory completely erased. Not to mentioned Disabled actors rarely get cast in theatre, let alone being accomodating in the first place. Not to mention physical disabilities can have days that make it difficult for disabled people to function in their day to day life, while other days they might be completely fine (it is manageable for the person. It depends on the condition). In this case, Yannick had managed to get through most of the productions without coughing up blood, but during one performance, he ended up coughing blood and because his disability was not “occurring every single time” people who have not dealt with disabilities would assume it as “faking”. That is an issue that the theatre production was not accomodating or understanding of a medical disability/condition.
