As a musical form, 'Shaabi' is the voice of the people - an urban expression on social commentary and expressive entendres. As a dance style, 'Shaabi' reflects the authentic expression of the Egyptian people, capturing their humor, playfulness and day-to-day goings on. While Shaabi music evolved against a folk music backdrop in the 70s, the most recent evolution of popular festival/club music from the Cairo shaabi scene has captured the fancy of bellydancers around the world. Electro-shaabi has entrenched itself into common culture and the genre. Though constantly evolving as we speak, it is here to stay.
