  • In the video I voice something that I feel quite strongly about.
And that is the topic of van windows and why you shouldn't install glass windows! I installed some glass windows as many self converters do. I think this is a MASSIVE mistake for 4 main reasons as I discuss in the video:
    1) Thermal conductivity
    2) Blinds
    3) Security
    4) Water Ingress & Ventilation
The dometic range of acrylic windows are just better than the glass windows with regards to every one of these topics as I explore in the video. Yes they are more expensive but I think the extra money is money well spent.
Installing glass windows is a massive regret that I have for my conversion :(.
Here's a link to the dometic windows that I wished I'd installed, the dometic seitz s4 window:

    Thanks for watching!

I wouldn't worry about security because if someone wants to break in, then they will do. Also, a bonded glass window adds torsional rigidity to the vehicle, as with the front windscreen which adds 34%.

Good points. Had not thought of the security element.

Are you forgetting the glass windows at the front on the van?? If they want to get in the van they will. Also you can’t leave plastic windows open at night as well as all it takes is for someone to put there fingers under the open lip and rip it open.

Hi Sam - very helpful vid - any suggestions or recommendation regarding acrylic windows? Appreciate your advice mate. Cheers

Hi James. Most secure and cost effective solution is roof lights. I have personal experience with the dometic mini and micro heki and think they're great. Haven't forked out for acrylic side windows on a conversion yet...

good solution for this is the food truck style windows. they have a cover that comes down over it : ) I wanted it for stealth reasons but it could definitely fix security & insulation problems! I would insulate the covers that swing open : )

@@sampayne6318 possibly, will have to look into it. haven't dealt with one but would definitely be worth it for me. can't imagine not having a window at least for my seating area, but need to be stealth and security is pretty important too as I'll be full time

Yhh, I was gunna say roof lights do let lots of light in but you obviously miss out on any views...you might be able to keep some aluminium covers/ shutters that are light and strong 💪

@@sampayne6318 they make lightweight one's with aluminum! I think they can all be pricey though, so honestly yeah I was thinking maybe I can figure a way to save the cut out I make for the window, add some sort of trim and have a diy cover hahaha, still trying to figure out how to make that work though... I'll probs be thinking for a while 🤔

Security. Plastic/acrylic you can cut with a Stanley knife and makes your can less secure by far.
Looks wise they look shit. Fade over time and damage easily one trip into a hedge scuffs and scratches them.
The only noteworthy part is the thermal property

    Acrylic cracks.
Polycarbonate is ten times stronger and don't creack. They just dent.

I getting 4 glass windows installed for me two at the back doors, fixed on the slider and opening one on the other side. All for £600 fitted. If I went caravan style it would all look like a submarine from the 70s and cost over a grand. No thanks. There is plenty of examples of decent blinds, just look around.

I have both types on my van I glass fixed in the sliding door and slider the other side and a poly vision towards the rear and heki 2 in roof, I like both, Oh and have you never heard of blinds and isolated covers for glass windows. I guess everyone has an opinion but I am sure the many thousands of vans on the road with bonded windows are happy enough with them.

Yh I think bonded windows are great on smaller campers. However If I did another big conversion I wouldn't use them...the dometic windows have blinds and flyscreens built in.

Where do you get the blind for the roof vent? That's nice!

I'd keep the glass it makes a noise if it gets smashed I've seen acrylic melted with a butane soldering iron to open the catch which makes no noise. You can always add another frame similar to the acrylic with blind and screen on the inside

Are acrylic windows even road legal for vehicles? Do they have marking? Your glass is tempered. In case of accident it can be easily smashed to for access or if it brakes it shatters in small bits. What does acrylic do? Pop out and fly somewhere? Plus its flammable thats why it is not permitted to use in road vehicles. I am very interested on what is a law on this.
