    As a construction worker in the US, it blows my mind how much timber gets tossed. I try to grab what I can use and use it to repair or build things.

      Ya it’s unreal. I worked at a lumber yard. And same thing. Big jobs would finish and materials would get returned and most just gets tossed…it’s a shame.

    Came expecting a bowl for skateboards to ride. Interesting about the wastage. I have all my boards and some are pretty beat up but there's history there.

    Man, Calgary has companies like Eavor that are turning old oil wells into geothermal energy generating systems. Some coverage for them would be good to see.

      Oil wells from the 70’s, are filled with oil again.
      Oil is not made from decomposing bones

      @@i_love_games110 conversion is not necessary for providing fuel with proper rotation of well use.
      With that said, it is good to be switching from a fuel source which causes health issue due to exhaust and extraction(pollution from production runoff), to a less invasive and destructive approach.

      It’s because of the process and how much time the brothers spend on making the product. If it was on a factory line, I’d agree with you; $400 for a machine made object is nuts; but it’s man made so that’s why the price is so high. Plus supply and demand also play a huge role in how much the product is sold.

    Those earrings look way better than anything I'd expect from being made out of busted skateboards. Hats off to these guys. Although, I will agree with what others have said about the price tag for the bowl.

      The people complaining about the price aren't going to buy it so they're not the market demographic. It isn't a mass produced item so you're paying for a skilled craftsman's time, not some assembly line product.

The likely problem is their production can't charge less as is. But it's not like they're hand crafting the bowls from carefully selected hardwood. It's machined machined machined.

    they should make a 60’s- 70’s style skate deck out of the recycled boards! they were simple solid boards, it would be so interesting to see that solid deck shape with those crazy layers!

      though these colours might look nice and the boards are very strong the way they are used in skateboards, if you try to flip the gradiant you will end up with a board that can be broken by hand very easily. so the look would be nice but theres no strength in them this way

      Thats because even governing bodies treat it as a joke... Since the companies making the waste pays them to not care. At least these creators dedicated themselves to reusing. It's not in mosts price range, doesn't mean it isn't that valuable.

      I agree, but the first company isn't making large quantities of common items, whereas the second one makes screwdrivers and other valuable and common goods so I think they should be quite cheap. you also have to factor in that they have to collect the boards themselves in small amounts.

      @@hydroxyl5130 I should've worded it much better the 2nd "valuable" is meant in terms of usefulness, a screwdriver and the other products the second company produce are arguably more useful and so should be cheaper than the 1st company's "art work" style pieces

    I seen these bowls around Calgary buy I never actually knew this was the process or where they came from.
    Over the past 5-10 years there's been so much market growth and creativity in this city, it's nice to see.
    Whether your in Kensington, Inglewood or downtown on 17th more and more shops like this open up.

      $400 isn't a lot when you factor in the time, know how, resources, etc. This isn't an assembly line product. Each bowl is a unique piece of functional art that's of high quality. They make a limited number(likely cuz it creates a lot of byproduct) so the price reflects that.

    A friend has been doing it for years but he gets some of his boards from pro's so when you get your product (jewelry for example) it comes with a note saying who's board it was!

    This recycled skateboard wood is amazing, a lot of work. I’ve seen a guy do similar with coloured pencils and that looks great too.
    The versatility is incredible. Screw driver handles, jewellery it all looks fantastic. Nice to see the mrs getting into it too!

    Very good case of recycling. Don't know if they are getting those boards for free, or pay for them, but $400 is a really expensive, and I personally would've paid maybe $40.

      Woodworking takes time, skill, materials and tools all of which need to be compensated for. For a hand turned bowl, $400 is not an insane price, especially considering the unique look and story behind it. You might not be willing to pay for it, but there are people who will. Beyond that they are taking a "waste" product and removing it from the waste stream.

      eco friendy ? with all that glue and remember these boards used to have a grip tape that means a lot of aluminum oxide (abrasive that I wont put in my stomach while thinking "oh I am so green and eco friendly"

      I expect the bowls are coated in some sort of resin so there shouldnt be an issue with the grime from the boards touching anything that goes in the bowl

      @@mma8208 handcrafted items that require two weeks of labor on up-cycled trash do not represent "consumerism"... That's the antithesis of consumerism. You're paying the REAL COST of a product, not the deflated cost of mass production. It's reducing the amount of waste, not increasing it. These bowls are better because regular bowls, a product of consumerism, ignore the environmental cost of their production. You pay $5, the landfill, plastic waste, and pollution make up the other $350.
      It means consumers really get to see what the normal things in their life cost, not the very cheap cost of environmentally devastating mass production.

    Made a 26" scooter from Scratch for my Nephew for Christmas. I was on 'low-cash' that year. Shaped one of my old decks for the foot base. I balanced the fork to be able to roll it no handed, lean it in the direction you wanted to go. I guess someone else wanted it. Disappeared 2011 😑

    I'd love to see how industry recycles lithium batteries. I know it's a relatively new industry but with electric cars growing I wonder if there will be resource shortages soon.

      It’s simple. They don’t… they also get all the electricity for charging those car batteries from coal, gas or petrol. Electric cars, at the moment are far from being good for the environment.

      I think you’ve been misinformed by opinions and not facts. It’s well documented in studies that the younger generations (millennials, Gen Z) are the most environmentally conscious and giving generation to date. Obviously that’s a huge brush to paint all of them with so there’s going to be varieties of all types but take heart in knowing the next generation is doing a little better than us and the next one after them will do a little better yet. 🙂

      with all that glue used during the process?? and remember these boards used to have a grip tape that means a lot of aluminum oxide (abrasive that I wont put in my stomach while thinking "oh I am so green and eco friendly"

      Wood lathe is the easiseeyt thing to use, no skills needed. I worked with methal lathe its muvh more complex and working with different metal, you need to learn a lot. But still its not hard skill.

    My work throws out these pallets that are basically 4 perfect 2x4x88", and another type has 4x4 sheets of mdf and particle boards in perfect condition. Getting quite the lumber pile going from picking off the best but I can't keep up

      I’m guessing the added labor to recreate it raises the profit margin. Seems odd though that it would be so expensive especially when it’s literally donated to them. I doubt they buy the broken decks from previous owners. I mean you still get money back when you recycle aluminum.
