  • As far as I am concerned Karin Swann and Lisa Wilkinson the grand daughters of the founder ruined it. There are many articles on the family taking out about £80 million from the company in the 10 years before its demise. www.mirror.co.... There is the cheap sale of the Mantonwood distribution centre as well www.thisismone... and the pension deficit www.theguardia.... Here is an article on Peter Swann married to Karin Swann.
    www.thisismone...
    B&M bought 70 stores and Poundland 50.

Thanks Tim, It's very interesting to hear what happened to Wilco. My local one a similar building in Rhyl has gone too, it's like losing Woolworths all over again. I could see things were going down, the odd items not being available, lots of empty shelves and no wallpaper available for the last few months. We live in a very greedy age, people start great businesses and the kids come along and wreck it all. I used to sell new Leyland Cars in the late 70's and I find it sad and a disaster what happened to all that.

Having recently worked at their distribution centre at Worksop I saw what was causing the issue, I even wrote to the chair lady Lisa Wilkinson to be fobbed off my HR, looks like they had no intention of keeping Wilcos going. Worksop has lost 2,000 jobs. Sheffield Wilco is in the old Woolworths building.

You are well informed Tim...It's all happened before bud...grand parents build it up,there children carry it on,and the grand children run it into the floor...such a shame really, I hope they are happy with the cash rewards they will have no doubt finished up with. Thanks for posting Tim, you have an interest so much around us,and we love you're work.👍

Wilko is certainly going to be missed. They were both useful and popular. They were a family store just as Woolworths used to be.

Asset stripping. Its the impact on the local area, Wilkinson commited to the Haymarket when the market shut and I can't see that one becoming a BnM, when BnM is up the road anyway.
Tim, I've uploaded some fantastic videos 👍

The Haymarket has been totally destroyed Richard, its going to be even more dead. No Cooperative and now this.

@@timawells yeah, like I said, when the market shut, Wilko committed to the Haymarket and in fact had a complete store revamp, which at the time, gave us hope for the area.

These company owners should understand that they have a commitment to their workers. Their fathers and grandfathers who built up these companies would turn in their graves. Same thing happened with BHS, They will get karma for this.

Wow ! Can’t believe the demise in Worksop , I liked Wilcos, but have to admit there’s a bit of karma going on there, in your last video about Worksop pubs you showed us what I knew as “ the Litten Tree” and mentioned it was a hardware store, it was an absolute quality and family run hardware store quaintly old fashioned in which you could buy anything of which would stand the test of time, then along came Wilcos selling cheap and nasty shit and drove them into the wall after decades of service to the town….. no tears for Wilcos !

I worked at Wilcos warehouse 12 months before the demise. How much money and assets did the family get out, before dumping 2000 workers in Worksop on the dole?
